Various material and structures are used in a railway vehicle in order to insulate the passenger compartment form the exterior noise sources. Normal train and early model of the high speed train use the corrugated steel panel as a main sound proof element, however, the steel panel is replaced by aluminum extruded panel or aluminum honeycomb structure for the weight reduction. With these elements, plywood, nomex-honeycomb and glass wool are widely used in the layered structure of the body. Also, in the side wall of the train, double glazed window made of the laminate glass is the major noise transmission path and the sound insulation performance is very important. In this study, we measure the intensity transmission loss on these sound proof elements of the train, based upon ASTM E2249-02 and we compare the sound insulation performance per weight using the mass law deviation (MLD).

Sound insulation performance is measured and analysed on the aluminum extruded panels used for the floor and the side wall of the high speed train. STLs (Sound Transmission Losses) of the two panel models are compared using MLD (Mass Law Deviation) in aspect of the weight. Through the comparison of the cross sectional structures, the effect of the core structure on the sound insulation performance is investigated. Finally, improvement effect on the STL is compared and analysed when the elastic porous foam is filled in the core of the extruded panels. The aim of the study is to provide the information for the STL improvement of the aluminum extruded panels used in the high speed train.
