In the Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) funded research project that the authors has been conducting, the different integrated control strategies are studied for a smart home. This paper addresses control strategies of a cooling system in a residential building. The most common control strategy applied to this traditional cooling system is a simple on-off control. The current problems with the aforementioned control are usually based on a one point measured temperature (a signal from a thermostat installed in a living room) in each dwelling unit, cooling energy use for unoccupied rooms as well as a difference in temperatures between spaces can occur occasionally. The aim of this paper is therefore to investigate the differences in the system's performance between control strategies. It is shown that energy savings of control strategies are strongly influenced by occupant schedule.

In the area of building simulation, occupant modeling is one of the challenging problems due to its high uncertainty as well as its significant impact on energy simulation. To handle this, a new modeling approach, so-called an agent-based simulation approach, is demonstrated in this paper. An agent-based model deals with cognitive agents endowed with a set of behaviors that are designed to mimic behaviour of humans under certain circumstances. The agent-based model also includes stochastic movement of occupants inside multiple zones. In the paper, a series of agent-based building energy simulation runs were performed and compared with traditional building simulation runs. It was found that the results of the agent-based simulation is significantly different from those of the traditional simulation runs. The proposed model may pave a new way for the next generation of building simulation.

In the Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) funded research project that the authors has been conducting, the different integrated optimal control strategies are studied for a smart home. This paper addresses optimal control of a cooling system in a residential building. The optimal control of the cooling system means keeping optimal cooling setpoint temperature. In the study, the Fmincon in MATLAB optimization toolbox was chosen to deal with the constrained discrete optimization problem. It is shown in the paper that how much energy can be saved when optimal control is applied compared to the rule-based control.

최근 정보량의 급격한 증가로 데이터센터는 점차 대형화되고 있으며, 통합적으로 관리/운영되기 위해서는 전산실내 적절한 온도와 습도의 유지가 필수적이므로, 전산실내 에너지의 사용 효율을 극대화 하기 위한 연구가 꾸준히 이루어지고 있다. 이 연구에서는 국내 공공부문의 대형 전산실을 모델로 선정하여 전산실 내 서버의 위치, 용량 그리고 냉각시스템 등을 고려하여 전산실내 열/유동특성을 수치적으로 규명함으로써, 에너지 효율 극대화를 추구하고 전력을 절감하여 저탄소 녹색성장과 그린IT 환경을 구축 하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 실제 측정한 환경 데이터를 바탕으로 전산유체역학(CFD)을 이용하여 3차원 비압축성, 정상상태의 열/유동특성을 예측한다. 또한 기존 및 개선된 전산실에 대한 비교 결과를 바탕으로 새로운 열/유동조건을 도출하며, 이를 통하여 전산실 운영에 필요한 에너지 효율향상 방안을 제안하고자 한다. 연구 결과, 전산실 천장의 냉기유입부분과 열기배출부분으로 나뉘어 냉복도와 온복도를 형성하며, 내부 서버와 기타 각종 장비들의 발열 등으로 부분적인 열섬(Thermal island)현상이 나타났다. 이러한 열섬현상을 줄이고, 전산실내 환경을 최적화하기 위하여 찬공기 유입부분의 속도, 배출구의 유량, 그리고 냉/온 복도의 역할 변경 등 여러 가지 가능한 매개변수에 대한 연구가 필수적이다. 또한, 서버에서 발생한 고온의 공기를 배출하는 것이 전산실 내 적절한 온도구현에 효과적이며, 열섬현상을 방지하기 위해서는 이 부분에 차가운 공기의 유입이 필요하다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

A main function of paper machine headbox is to deliver a uniform dispersion of fibers in water through the manifold to a paper machine wire. The paper quality is mainly influenced by the flow characteristics taking place in a headbox. In the present work, the prediction of transport phenomena and the optimization of shape of headbox are carried out by integration of CFD and optimization technology. The back-wall of headbox is parameterized by a Bezier curve and its 9-control points and the diffuser diameters are adopted as the design variables. Because the optimal solutions can be obtained when the deviation of flow rate at each manifold and the pressure drop in the headbox are minimized, they are considered as the objective functions. To obtain the non-dominated optima, Pareto set, the multi-objective genetic algorithm is used. After twenty-five evolutions, the 6 numbers of non-dominated optima can be obtained.

PECVD process has taken advantages of a fast process of manufacture and low cost of production because it is operated at lower temperature than that of existing process. In CVD process, the wafer quality is mainly dependent on the uniformity of film thickness and the film density may reduce due to a low temperature process. In the present work, numerical analyses are carried out to improve the deposition performance of annealing chamber. To do this, governing equations are solved by CFD and TDMAS ([(CH3)2N]3SiH) is considered as the working fluid. In addition, the effect of inlet velocity of O2 and position and length of nozzle on the deposition rate and uniformity are investigated numerically and the computational results are compared with those of experiments.

One of the Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) funded research projects the authors are working on is to quantify energy saving potential when integrated cooling, heating, ventilation and lighting control algorithm is applied to a smart home. To investigate the aforementioned issue, the authors developed a simulation model as well as lighting systems for a selected typical Korean apartment. Especially occupant behavior is known to be one of the most uncertain parameters in building simulation. For this study, the authors monitored the occupancy pattern of 30 households and applied it to the lighting control. In the paper, it will be elaborated whether smart control significantly outperforms the conventional on-off control. It is shown that energy savings of control strategies are strongly influenced by occupant schedule.

In the area of building simulation, modeling of occupants can be classified into three ways, (1) a deterministic approach, (2) a stochastic approach, and (3) a cognitive approach. The deterministic approach is most widely applied where occupants are modeled with a fixed schedule only. The probabilistic approach employs a statistical method to predict human behavior. The aforementioned two approaches regard the humans as static objects. To overcome this, a new modeling approach, so-called an agent-based simulation approach, is demonstrated in this work. By adopting the cognitive approach for agent-based simulation, occupants are modeled as agents who interact with their environments and other agents interactively. This study illustrates the difference between the cognitive approach and the deterministic approach, and benefits from agent-based simulation.
