Self-Perceived English Competence, Self-Esteem, and Interpersonal Relations in Cabin Crew Personnel

        민지유,이승열 한국영어어문교육학회 2013 영어어문교육 Vol.19 No.4

The purpose of this study is to examine the level of self-perceived English competence of Korean cabin crew personnel working for national or foreign airlines, and to determine whether its level influences their self-esteem with respect to their job duties and interpersonal relations with foreign colleagues and customers within their organization. The data was collected from 243 cabin crew personnel, 143 personnel in a national airline and 100 personnel in foreign airline, by means of a survey questionnaire. They are variant from 20’s to 40’s in ages, less than 1 year to over 20 years in work experience, and stewardess to senior purer in their position. The findings reveal that cabin crew personnel in the foreign airline have a higher level of self-perceived English competence than those who work for the national airline, and thus the former, cabin crew members working for the foreign airline, tend to be higher than those in the national airline in terms of self-esteem and interpersonal relations as members within an organization. The study uncovers the implication that English competence plays an important role in enhancing the self-esteem and interpersonal relations for cabin crew personnel. These are significant components for contributing to teamwork and carrying out job duties successfully.

Negotiation for meaning in learner-instructor interactions in an ESP course for expatriate employees

        민지유 한국ESP학회 2023 ESP REVIEW Vol.5 No.1

This study examines the strategies for meaning negotiation used in interactions between expatriate employees and their instructors during English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classes, and how the use of these strategies enhances their ESP learning. This qualitative case study involved three expatriate employees working in the United States and attending an online ESP program. Drawing on Long’s (1980) concept of negotiation for meaning, the study analyzed the communication that occurred between individual employees and their instructors in synchronous one-on-one online classes. The study identified six widely and commonly used strategies for negotiating meaning: clarification request, comprehension check, confirmation check, correction, repetition, and L1 use. Additionally, two other strategies, learning confirmation and knowledge expansion, were also confirmed. The study also found that the expatriate employees’ use of selected meaning negotiation strategies supported their English learning by promoting mutual understanding between them and their instructors. However, it was identified that the expatriate employees adopted different negotiation strategies depending on their English proficiency, and negotiation for meaning using those strategies did not always lead to successful English learning. Based on the results, this study suggests directions for future research.

효율적인 관제사-조종사 간 의사소통을 위한 항공영어의 이해

        김윤희 ( Kim Youn-hee ),민지유 ( Min Jiyu ) 한국ESP학회 2021 ESP REVIEW Vol.3 No.1

Effective communication between an air-traffic controller and a pilot is crucial for aviation safety, and misapprehension and communication failures between them can result in aviation accidents. As a means of improving and securing their aviation English skills, they are required to take an English proficiency test for aviation (EPTA) by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Due to the scarcity of studies discussing the meaning of aviation English proficiency in South Korea, however, a clear understanding of what aviation English actually means and what role it plays in efficient air controller-pilot communication has not yet been made. In response to these issues, this paper introduces different cases of actual air controller-pilot communication and discusses efficient aviation English from the perspective of two elements of aviation English, Standard Phraseologies Language and Plain Language. Based on the discussion, suggestions for researchers in the field of aviation are offered.
