Vol.2000 No.10

This paper presents the results of the application of a computational fluid dynamics algorithm for the simulation of plasma flows of arc-heated jet. The underlying physical model is based on the axisymmetric form of the conservation equations that are coupled with an arc model including Ohm heating, electromagnetic forces. The arc model given as a source term in fluid dynamic equations is determined by a solution of electric potential field governed by an elliptic partial differential equation. The governing equation of electric field is loosely coupled with fluid dynamic equations by an electric conductivity that is a function of state variables. However, the electric fields and flow fields cannot be solved in fully coupled manner, but should be solved iteratively due to the different characteristics of governing equations. With this solution approach, several applications of arc flow analysis will be presented including Arc Thruster and Circuit Breaker.

In this paper, we design an image-based robust controller to compensate uncertainties with image Jacobian and robot dynamics due to uncertain depth measurement and load variations. The proposed controller with eye-in-hand structure has separate terms to compensate each of uncertainties. The ultimate bounded ness of the closed-loop system is proved by the Lyapunov approach. The performance of the proposed control system is demonstrated by simulation and experimental results a 5-link robot manipulator with two degree of freedom.

Innovation plays a pivotal role in establishing and maintaining a competitive advantage in the market for firms because innovation can be the source of a profit increase and growth. In addition, innovation allows firms to obtain a stable profit by constructing the entry barrier for other firms. Thus, innovation can lower the default risk of firms. However, innovation can also increase the firm’s default risk because innovation requires too much investment of the firm’s resources. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of innovation on the default risk of firms. Our sample consists of firms listed on the Korea Stock Exchange from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2007. Our sample excludes financial and construction firms. Firms that issued preferred equities during the sample period are also excluded. This study makes use of R&D activity as an innovation input indicator and innovation performance as an innovation output indicator. R&D activity is measured as R&D expenditure divided by sales. Innovation performance is measured as the proportion of gross profit not explained by capital stock or labor. Alternatively, the number of new product or process improvement may be employed. Yet, there are other types of innovation such as new sources of supply, new market, and so on. The innovation performance is based on the Cobb-Douglas production function and captures the contribution of all innovation activities to a firm’s gross profits. The Merton’s (1974) model is adopted to compute the default probability which proxies the default risk of firms. The Merton’s model uses the market value of a firm’s equity and take account of the volatility of a firm’s assets, while accounting models such as the Altman’s (1968) Z-score model do not. Accounting models imply that firms with similar financial ratios have similar likelihoods of default. However, in the Merton’s model, firms which have similar levels of equity and debt may have quite different likelihoods of default when the volatilities of their assets differ (Vassalou and Xing, 2004). The empirical results are as follows. First, there exists a U-shaped relationship between R&D activity and the default risk of firms. In other words, R&D activity reduces the default risk, but too much R&D activity increases the default risk. Second, innovation performance monotonically reduces the default risk of firms. These results imply that considering the industrial and technological characteristics of the firm, a manager must make decisions on the optimal level of innovation activity and a policymaker need design a policy not to push innovation activity too much.

For the analysis of compressible flow with real gas effect, characteristic form of Roe's Riemann solver was derived again using real gas equation of state and variable specific heat, and it was extended to multi component reactive system. From this study, it is known that some correction should be made for the use of existing numerical algorithm. 1) Sonic speed and characteristic variable should be corrected with real gas effect. 2) Roe's average was applicable only with the assumption of constant properties. 3) Artificial damping term and characteristic variables should be corrected but their influence may not be significant.

This study was conducted to patients visited oral maxillo-facial surgery, KNUH and the purpose of the study was to assess skeletal and dento-alveolar stability after surgical-orthodontic correction treated by skeletal Class III malocclusion patients with open bite versus non-open bite. This retrospective study was based on the examination of 40 patient, 19 males and 21 females, with a mean age 22.3 years. The patients were divided into two groups based on open bite and non-open bite skeletal Class III malocclusion patients. The cephalometric records of 40 skeletal Class III malocclusion patients (open bite: n = 18, non-open bite: n = 22) were examined at different time point, i.e. before surgery(T1), immediately after surgery(T2), one year after surgery(T3). Bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy was performed in 40 patients. Rigid internal fixation was standard method used in all patient. Through analysis and evaluation of the cephalometric records, we were able to achieve following results of post-surgical stability and relapse. 1. There was no significant statistical differences between open bite and non-open bite with skeletal Class III malocclusion patients in maxillary occlusal plane angle of pre-operative stage(p>0.05). 2. Mean vertical relapses of skeletal Class III malocclusion patients with open bite were 0.02±1.43mm at B point and 0.42±1.56mm at Pogonion point. In skeletal Class III malocclusion patients with non-open bite, 0.12±1.55mm at B point and 0.08±1.57mm at Pogonion point. There was no significant statistical differences between open bite and non-open bite with skeletal Class III malocclusion patients in vertical relapse(p>0.05). 3. Mean horizontal relapses of skeletal Class III malocclusion patients with open bite were 1.22±2.21mm at B point and 0.74±2.25mm at Pogonion point. In skeletal Class III malocclusion patients with non-open bite, 0.92±1.81mm at B point and 0.83±2.11mm at Pogonion point. There was no significant statistical differences between open bite and non-open bite with skeletal Class III malocclusion patients in horizontal relapse(p>0.05). 4. There were no significant statistical differences between open bite and non-open bite with skeletal Class III malocclusion patients in post-surgical mandibular stability(p>0.05). and we believe this is due to minimized mandibular condylar positional change using mandibular condylar positioning system and also rigid fixation using miniplate 5. Although there was no significant relapse tendency observed at chin points, according to the Pearson correlation analysis, the mandibular relapse was influenced by the amount of vertical and horizontal movement of mandibular set-back(p=0.05, r>0.304).

Pine forests existing in Hong-do island were examined as regarding such characteristics, tree form, needle length, branch diameter, bark colors, ratio of summer wood to springwood, location and number of resin canal and other measurements. Hong-do island, located the furthest west part of Korea, suports only Pinus densiflora but very few Pinus thunbergii, in fact the present authors could not find any black pine individuals at all through investigation. Checking 14 individual trees of red pine, more than age of 20, of the genetic contamination by black pine, in a certain degree, exist. Here, a very dense foliage type and a very sparse foliage type tree of red pine growing nearby was examined and the unique fact was that each of those type has only one (average number 1.3) accessory resin canal, while other trees have three as minimum or more. The present authors thought this island had not been covered by any Pinus thunbergii but by Pinus densiflora. It was thought that Pinus thunbergii stands grown along the sea-coast of Korean Peninsula are pollen donors to this island.

Introduction: Piezosurgery device is one of the most commonly used instrument on the intraoral surgery such as maxillary sinus lift and autogeneous bone graft. Piezosurgery instrument also contains the tips that are manufactured especially for the convenient bone graft, which now many surgeons apply them for collecting bone graft materials in the curettage method for the restoration of skull defects. However, objective data has not been shown concerning the effects about bone graft with using Piezosurgery. Therefore we investigated the effects of Piezosurgery on the rabbit-skull defect healing. Materials & Methods: To investigate the regeneration of the bony defect with various bone graft, 10 adult New Zealand white rabbits (average weight : 2.8 ± 0.3kg, about 12weeks) were used. The four circular bony defects measuring 6mm in diameter were made with Piezosurgery device on each rabbit cranial bone. The harvested bone tissues during defect formation were also used for autogeneous bone graft. They were grafted into the defects in a various type; block type (Group 1), particulated type by the bone mill (Group 2), chopped type by curette shaped Piezosurgery tip (Group 3), the defect without any graft was served as control (control group). The animals were sacrificed after 6 weeks and bone regeneration capacity was evaluated histomorphometrically. Result & Conclusion: Autogeneous bone graft harvested using a Piezosurgery instrument showed satisfactory bone regeneration. There was no conspicuous difference bone prepared amomg by bone mill or Piezosurgery and block bone graft. Therefore, the bone harvested from the intraoral site near the operation field using the piezosurgery device can be a feasible and reliable graft for intraoral bony defects.
