The purpose of this review is to understand how different college and university physical activity education policies affect college and university students. Given the different policy arrangements of college and university physical activity education programs in the American higher education system, it is important to understand how these different physical activity education policies (i.e., required to earn a baccalaureate degree vs. not required to earn a baccalaureate degree) influence students’ physical activity behavior and motivation. Specifically, the study reviewed the characteristics of physical activity education policies in terms of two different perspectives (i.e., public health perspective vs. a motivational perspective). Having a required physical activity education course policy generally enhanced student accessibility to physical activity education courses and helped to form students’ positive physical activity behaviors during the college and university years and post-graduation, whereas having an elective physical activity course policy was most respectful of student autonomy. Future research may need to explore different influences of physical activity course satisfaction during a semester between the two different policies.

The protoplast fusion of Rhizopus suinus was studied to develope a new method for strain improvement in Rhizopus species. High yields of protoplasts from 12hr-age of germlings were obtained by using an enzyme system containing Bacillus HD 2 chitosanase and commercial Driselase with 0.5M mannitol as osmotic stabilizer. The optimum temperature for mycelium digestion was 25℃ and the optimum pH was 6.0. The reversion frequency of these protoplasts on minimal and complete agar medium was 0.39 and 0.45%, respectively. In the presence of polyethylene glycol (PEG), intraspecific hybrids were aquired by the protoplast fusion between protoplasts of UV induced auxotrophs. Thirty percent of PEG (pH 6.0) was found to be most effective and the efficiency of PEG was enhanced by the addition of 10-50 mM CaCl_2. The average fusion frequency under optimum condition was 0.42%.
Synthetic Approach to Produce Poly(ester-amide)s Using Bio-based Diols

According to the current global production of bioplastics in 2020, PET and polyamide are the top two engineering plastics worldwide. PET exhibits disadvantages of relatively low physical strength and Tg. One way to modify PET to yield a higher Tg and better mechanical properties is to combine polyesters and polyamides. For this reason, poly(ester-amide)s (PEA) are attracting widespread interests in many researchers. Though much effort has been involved into PEAs, only a few studies have been conducted in PEAs for engineering plastics. In this study, for the development of bioplastics having mechanical properties superior to PET, various diols were synthesized with amino acids and dimethyl esters which were non-edible bio-based materials. In the same polymerization process as PET, thermal bulk polymerization was succeeded. Thermal analysis showed that the Tg was nearly twice as high as that of PET, which enabled to utilize PEAs in applications requiring much wider temperature range.

A new series of potentially biobased copolyesters, poly(1,3-butylene 1,4- cyclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate) (P13BCT) based on 1,3-butanediol (1,3-BD) with 1,4-cyclohexane dimethanol (CHDM) was synthesized. Dibutyltin oxide (DBTO) and titanium(IV) butoxide (TBT) catalysts were employed, and the resulting copolymers were analyzed to evaluate the efficacy of each catalyst on the copolymerization. DBTO produced low molecular weight oligomers with M n ranging from 2,000 to 2,500, whereas TBT produced high molecular weight copolymer M n ranging from 8,700~21,900. GC-MS analysis was performed to identify the by-products during the transesterification process, and side reactions such as dehydration were observed, which were in good agreement with previous results showing the same by-product. The correlation spectroscopy (COSY), heteronuclear single-quantum correlation spectroscopy (HSQC), 1H and 13C NMR analyses revealed that the chain end of P13BCT_Sn was primarily composed of the vinyl end group rather than the hydroxyl group, which was a major contributor to the formation of low molecular weight polymers. The density of P13BCT slightly increased with the addition of 1,3-BD. The T g of P13BCT decreased with 1,3-BD contents from 74℃ to 51℃ due to the enhanced flexibility of the main chain. The thermal stability of the copolyesters was determined using TGA in a nitrogen atmosphere. The copolyesters were stable up to 330-360℃, and the decomposition temperature decreased as the 1,3-BD content increased. Yield strength increased from 39.4 MPa to 43.6 MPa as 1,3-BD content increased; however, Young's modulus and yield strength difference was not statistically significant.
