Even if the sales of electric vehicles were increasing to solve environmental problems, short driving distances and inconvenient battery charging are the most important issues. Most car makers are trying to increase battery efficiency or extend the driving distance with new technic. DAS is one of the driveline systems used to increase the efficiency by disengaging the driving friction force from wheels to reducer and motor in a 4WD electric vehicle. But when the DAS disengage the driveline, the side and pinion gears in differential gear system rotate at a high speed and make gear noise severely. In this paper, through the developing a backlash measurement device for differential gear system, analyzing the operating condition and the noise generating mechanism, the differential gear noise are improved and backlash specifications and test methods related to the noise are set up successfully.

Generally, excitation forces of the powertrain are transmitted through the structure paths, likewise powertrain support brackets, mounts and side members in a vehicle dynamic condition. But the vibration responses levels caused by the dynamic frequency overlap characteristics of the transfer path could have been amplifying unexpectedly and then an unintended NVH problem could happen. Therefore, it is preemptively necessary to recognize these characteristics, and try to avoid the frequencies and phase overlap. In this paper, two case study related to the transfer path natural frequency overlap have been proposed successfully. Based on this study, a new setup for the correlations between the test and analysis of the natural frequency and stiffness characteristics of the transfer path up to 1㎑ in the vehicle is proposed. And a NVH phenomenon caused by frequency overlap has been able to be predicted in early design stage.

To improve the gear noise quality, gear tooth grinding machine are widely used in automotive industry. While using the gear profile grinding machine to improve the gear tooth quality of the transmission, several defects such as chattering, tooth waves that cause the gear noise occasionally happened. But it is very difficult to solve that problem, because there is no one who knows the setting up the optimal grinding condition appropriately. The abnormal manufacturing conditions which make the gear noise make the engineer to spend a lot of time, effort, and money. Due to demands for solving the serious abnormal gear noise happened in the automatic transmission in the mass product stage, the vibration checking process in the worm wheel axis, work rotation and fixed axis of the grinding machine were adapted to find the root causes. As a result, gear profile wave are affected by the work rotation axis's unbalance which is caused by worm wheel feeding speed. And a primary and the secondary grinding feeding speed, cutting oil, work fixed forces are also proved as the important factors. After setting up the grinding condition reported in this paper, it was adapted successfully to the grinding machine to manufacture the new automatic transmissions' gear. The gear noise was dramatically disappeared and the process and the results will offer good guides to the engineers who manufacture the gear with the grinding machine.

To design the optimized low noise planetary gear sets, a program called pRMC(planetary run many cases) is developed. The pRMC is especially using a combination analysis method for all gear specifications and also able to analyze any type of planetary gear sets. The pRMC is composed of the 5 sections those are generate, setting, evaluate, combine and analysis. After calculating all candidate gear sets, the pRMC could show many results that represent the character of each gear set including the transmission error which is the main gear noise factor, the contact ratios, the bending stress and so on. By comparing the results objectively, user could predict and select the optimized gear set which has quiet noise level and desired durability. The planetary gear designed by pRMC could have reduced noise and vibration level from 5 to 10 dB than previous-designed one.

This paper shows a whole noise developing procedure and items for the new developed 6th speed automatic transmission. Through the planetary operating frequency analysis, predict the planetary gear noise problem. To reduce this noise, one-way clutch, input shaft length, and valve body cover shapes were changed. To develop the transfer gear and differential gear noise quality, analysis procedure and experimental tests are also done and fix the tooth tolerance specifications. And gear grinding methods are also used . Due to demands for developing and reducing the serious abnormal bearing noise, oil pump noise and torque converter noise, some special test procedures and specifications are developed and adapted. By using the acoustic camera and lazer-vibrometer, radiation noise could be handled and reduced quickly and effectively. The whole developing process and results will offer good guides to the engineers who develop the next generation transmission.
