Vol.32 No.6

The objective of this research was to use body fat percentage (BF%) as the Gold Standard for assessing obesity and to examine the concordance between the body mass index (BMI) and waist-hip ratio (WHR) approaches in determining obesity among military cadets. The subjects of this study were 718 male military cadets and 682 general males of the same age. The results of the study are as follows: First, for all criteria, except for the criteria related to obesity and overweight for BF%, BMI, and WHR, male cadets were found to be less likely to be overweight than general males. Second, in the high-BF% group (overweight/obese), BMI showed that male cadets had lower false positive and false negative rates than general males, while WHR showed that male cadets had a higher false positive rate and a lower false negative rate than general males. Third, the concordance of obesity metrics between male cadets and general males showed that the concordance of BF% and BMI was good for both groups. Taken together, the results show that male cadets have a lower misclassification of obesity based on BMI than the general males, whereas the misclassification of obesity based on WHR is higher in both groups. Therefore, considering the BF% of male cadets, BMI was found to be a better indicator of obesity than WHR.

Vol.33 No.3

The purpose of this study is to explore the literature research direction for approaching qualitatively about a body which is a tool for dancing by defining Sociology of Dance as a new academic area. For this, this research defined the area for sociology of dancing, and analyzed perspective of body from understanding body and Arthur W. Frank``s body types through literature review and preceding researches about the relationships of dancing and society, and arts and society. In result, body, which is a tool for dancing, is first, body has been excluded from academic subject for long time due to dualism and mechanism of Descartes of the West. Second, the interest of body as academic subject started to gain popularity after post-modern age in 1960s. For example, appearance of consumption culture, individualism, feminism movement, development of body controlling technology, and aging society highlighted body as subject of social and cultural subject interest. Third, though perspectives of body are various, there are general biological perspective and social constructivism perspective. The biological perspective is a naturalistic perspective, and social constructivism perspective is an opinion where body is formed, bounded, and created from the society in some level. Fourth, from social constructivism perspective, Arthur W. Frank used problem of action to categorize body types into four ideal typical bodies: the disciplined body, the mirroring body, the dominating body, and the communicative body. Arthur W. Frank``s typical bodies can categorize image types of dancer``s body. This research can provide, within social and cultural contexts, a method of exploring awareness of about the body that performer oneself aims.

Vol.33 No.4

This study investigates the association between five obesity indices (BMI: body mass index, BF%: body fat percentage, WC: waist circumference, WSR: waist-stature ratio, WHR: waist-hip ratio) and cardiovascular disease risk factors in middle-aged women, aiming to determine the most effective predictor among these indices. Cross-sectional data on five obesity indices, blood pressure (SBP: systolic blood pressure, DBP: diastolic blood pressure), and blood lipids (TC: total cholesterol, TG: triglycerides, HDL-C: high density lipoprotein cholesterol, LDL-C: low density lipoprotein cholesterol) were analyzed for 174 women aged 40 to 60 who participated in the healthcare program at the K-do public health center from May to November 2019. The results are as follows: 1) BMI, WC, and WSR showed inverse associations with HDL-C and positive associations with all other cardiovascular risk factor variables in middle-aged women. BF% correlated positively with TC, TG, LDL-C, and negatively with HDL-C. WHR was positively associated with TG and LDL-C, while negatively associated with HDL-C. 2) After correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis revealed causal relationships between SBP and BMI, DBP and WSR, TC and BF%, TG and BMI, HDL-C and WHR, LDL-C and BMI, and BF%. Based on the above results, BF% and BMI emerged as the most influential obesity indices for predicting cardiovascular disease risk factors among the five indices in middle-aged women aged 40 to 60 years. In conclusion, it is recommended that BF% and BMI be used together as the most influential tools to predict cardiovascular disease risk in middle-aged women.
