She (1886) and Heart of Darkness (1899) have consistently been read as significantly similar in their narrative elements, such as their character parallels, thematic semblances as well as genre characteristics. Extending it even further, many like Allan Hunter claim for the possible direct influence, that Heart of Darkness was the supposedly “deliberate choice to parallel and even parody the best-selling Rider Haggard novel She” (15). One complication to this assumption, however, is that there is no tangible or historical evidence of their interactions. This paper aims to apply the computational and quantitative analytic measures, or do the automatic reading as opposed to the manual human reading, in order to critically assess this experienced affinity in the stylistics of the two novels. In doing so, this research utilizes various R packages for the cluster, contrastive and sentiment analyses on a selection of corpora customized to serve the research purpose. This project achieves to do three things: to be a successful case study of such a distant reading analysis, to introduce an ingenious method of keyword-coined sentiment analysis which enables a unique observation on the undertone of the keywords used, and finally to work as a replicable framework of analyses for future similar literary researches.
