Environmental interpretation of literary works enables the writer and the reader to rethink about the relationships between nature and man, and the writer and the reader. In American history, culture-oriented settlement became most evident in the 19th century. At the same time, a countermovement of environmental consciousness brought about green writing and green reading. A large number of works with nature-setting and nature-theme had been written by the major and minor novelists. Among them, Hawthome, even though less well-known than Emerson or Thoreau, tried to put his apathy to commercialism and Puritanism in his romances which were based on mythic, aesthetic pastoralism. However, such a limited frame is Hawthorne's unavoidable alternative in order to approach ecological consciousness of those times. Futhermore, his fictions portray how the ecosystem can be deprived of life by mechanic exploration of recycl8ing nature. The Scarlet Letter is Hawthome's Alpha-work which describes an allegory of the conflict between the energy of the earth and the sexuality of the female character. Hester partially succeeds in modifying the destructive male-centered culture by submitting herself into the nature of New England landscape. In The House of the Seven Gables, the habitants of the Pyncheon House move to a rural cottage, which means that the four characters understand that nature is more vital to their rebirth than comfortable commercialism of the urban city. On the contrary, The Blithedale Romonce showe Hawthome's pessirmistic vision of the possible coexistence between man and nature in the future. Hawthome was not a forerunner of America's ecological literary tradition, but he showed a model of green writing by dealing with nature as metaphor for the reader to appreciate ecological novels.
