Not All Adjuncts Can be Merged Non-Cyclically
장영준 서강대학교 언어정보연구소 2009 언어와 정보 사회 Vol.11 No.-
Recently, the late merge approach has been extended to other constructions. For example, Fox (2002) applies the late merge approach to the Antecedent-Contained Deletion (ACD) constructions and Bhat & Pancheva (2004) apply it to degree clauses. In this paper, I show that not all adjuncts can be merged counter-cyclically: some must be merged cyclically in order to account for connectivity effects such as binding. In particular, I will point out some theoretical and empirical problems with Epstein et al.`s analysis and Fox`s ACD analysis.
