        Real-time 3D surface modeling for image based relighting

        <P>This paper proposes to obtain 3D modeling of object surface and to create a relit image in real-time. The proposed algorithm uses a single camera and synchronized stereo lights to capture the light field images by turning on and off the lights alternatively. The light field images from the controlled lighting approximate the reflectance models on object surfaces. The surface normal directions of object surface are modeled by the dichromatic reflectance model and Phong's shading geometry. The estimated normal map of object surface improves the rendering quality in image based relighting system. The proposed system is efficiently implemented in GPU-based programming, so it operates in real-time including 3D modeling and rendering. The proposed system is expected to be useful for video conference system, where the users can be immersed in video teleconference as if they were in a virtual environment.</P>

        The merlin tumor suppressor interacts with Ral guanine nucleotide dissociation stimulator and inhibits its activity

        Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is the most commonly mutated gene in benign tumors of the human nervous system such as schwannomas and meningiomas. The NF2 gene encodes a protein called schwannomin or merlin, which is involved in regulating cell growth and proliferation through protein–protein interactions with various cellular proteins. In order to better understand the mechanism by which merlin exerts its function, yeast two-hybrid screening was performed and Ral guanine nucleotide dissociation stimulator (RalGDS), a downstream molecule of Ras, was identified as a merlin-binding protein. The direct interaction between merlin and RalGDS was confirmed both in vitro and in the NIH3T3 cells. The domain analyses revealed that the broad C-terminal region of merlin (aa 141–595) is necessary for the interaction with the C-terminal Ras-binding domain (RBD) of RalGDS. Functional studies showed that merlin inhibits the RalGDS-induced RalA activation, the colony formation and the cell migration in mammalian cells.         Tangible video teleconference system using real-time image-based relighting

        <P>This paper deals with a real-time image based relighting system for tangible video teleconference. The proposed image based relighting system renders the extracted human object using the virtual environmental images. The proposed system can homogenize virtually the lighting environments of remote users on the video teleconference, or render the humans like they are in the virtual places. To realize the video teleconference, the paper obtains the reflectance models of users in real-time using the controlled lighting system. The reflectance models of human surface are obtained by a pair of lighting sources which are turned on and off alternatively. The images with different illuminations are exploited to model the reflectance on the object surfaces. The environment map for rendering is acquired by the mirror ball images or virtual background ones. And the relighting algorithm is implemented by GPU based programming for real-time operation. According to the simulations, the proposed system estimates the reflectance models of human faces, and relights the human faces in real-time. The objects are rendered by the reflectance models and virtual environment map. The proposed system enables the users to immerse video teleconference just as they are in the virtual environments.</P>

        광학적 다중 법선 벡터 기반 훈색(暈色)현상 BRDF 압축 기법

        본 논문은 생물체 표면에서 번쩍이고 다채로운 색깔의 반사특성을 보이는 훈색(暈色)현상의 양방향 반사율 분포 함수(BRDF: Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function)의 압축방법을 제안한다. 그래픽스 기술에서 훈색 현상의 용어를 보통 이리데센스(Iridescence) 또는 구조적 색상(structural colors)라고 부른다. 이러한 현상의 주요한 특징은 시점에 따라 다채로운 색상과 밝기를 갖는 것이다. 이것을 구현하기 위해 기존의 그래픽스 기술들은 BRDF를 이용한 방법을 사용한다. BRDF 방법은 많은 시점의 영상을 직접 활용하여 사실적인 표현이 가능한 장점이 있지만, 데이터양이 커서 연산량이 많은 단점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 훈색(暈色: Iridescence)현상의 BRDF로부터 반사맵을 작성하고, 반사맵을 여러 개의 색상 기반의 동심원으로 반사맵을 표현할 수 있는 방법을 제안한다. 이때 동심원 1개는 1개의 법선벡터에 의한 반사광의 빔폭을 의미한다. 본 논문에서는 여러 개의 가상의 광학적 법선벡터를 사용하여 울퉁불퉁한 동심원을 합성한다. 그리고 동심원의 중심을 통과하는 한 선분으로부터 1차원 스펙트럼 정보를 취득한다. 제안하는 방법은 BRDF의 막대한 데이터양을 효과적으로 줄여서 단지 1장의 텍스처를 사용하여 사실적인 밝기 차이와 스펙트럼 표현이 가능한 영상기반 렌더링 기법(IBR: image based rendering)으로 사용할 수 있다. This paper proposes a biological iridescence BRDF(Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function) compression and rendering method. In the graphics technology, iridescence sometimes is named structure colors. The main features of these symptoms are shown transform of color and brightness by varying viewpoint. Graphics technology to render this is the BRDF technology. The BRDF methods enable realistic representation of varying view direction, but it requires a lot of computing power because of large data. In this paper, we obtain reflection map from iridescence BRDF, analyze color of reflection map and propose representation method by several colorfully concentric circle. The one concentric circle represents beam width of reflection ray by one normal vector. In this paper, we synthesize rough concentric by using several virtually optical normal vectors. And we obtain spectrum information from concentric circles passing through the center point. The proposed method enables IBR(image based rendering) technique which results is realistic illuminance and spectrum distribution by one texture from reduced BRDF data within spectrum.

        The Effectiveness of Real-Time PCR Assay, Compared with Microbiologic Results for the Diagnosis of Pulmonary Tuberculosis

        Background: The incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in Korea is relatively high compared to the other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, with a prevalence of 71 per 100,000 in 2012, although the incidence is declining. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been introduced for the rapid diagnosis of TB. Recently, its advantage lies in higher sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of TB. This study evaluated the clinical accuracy of real-time PCR using respiratory specimens in a clinical setting. Methods: Real-time PCR assays using sputum specimens and/or bronchoscopic aspirates from 2,877 subjects were reviewed retrospectively; 2,859 subjects were enrolled. The diagnosis of TB was determined by positive microbiology, pathological findings of TB in the lung and pleura, or clinical suspicion of active TB following anti-TB medication for more than 6 months with a favorable response. Results: Sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were 44%, 99%, and 86% from sputum, and 65%, 97%, and 87% from bronchoscopic aspirates, respectively. For overall respiratory specimens, sensitivity was 59%, specificity was 98%, and accuracy increased to 89%. Conclusion: Positivity in real-time PCR using any respiratory specimens suggests the possibility of active TB in clinically suspected cases, guiding to start anti-TB medication. Real-time PCR from selective bronchoscopic aspirates enhances the diagnostic yield much more when added to sputum examination.

        The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of mother's parenting behavior, perfectionism and creative personality on young children's creativity. Mothers of 385 kindergarteners aged from 3 to 5 participated in this study. Data were analyzed by t test, F test, pearson's correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS 12.0 program. The results were as follows: First, mothers of boys showed higher creative personality than mothers of girls, and girls showed higher playfulness than boys. Mothers with higher educational level showed more affectionate parenting, active participation in parenting, and creative personality than mothers with lower educational level. Older mothers showed more logical guidance and affectionate parenting than younger mothers. Children with highly-educated mothers had higher level of uniqueness, concentration, independence-patience than children of mothers with low-educational level. Second, it was found that mother's parenting behavior, perfectionism, and creative personality influenced children's uniqueness and children's concentration on the task. It was also found that mother's parenting behavior and perfectionism had significant effects on children's playfulness, and mother's perfectionism and creative personality had significant influence on children's independence-patience.

      • 동적 환경에서의 효과적인 움직이는 객체 추출

        컴퓨터 비전 분야에서 전경을 추출하기 위한 영역 분할(segmentation) 방법에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되어 왔다. 특히, 전경이 배제된 배경 영상과 현재 프레임의 차이를 이용하여 전경을 추출하는 배경 차분(background subtraction) 방법은 요구하는 계산량에 비해 우수한 품질의 전경 추출이 가능하므로 실시간 처리가 필요한 비전 시스템에 다양하게 응용되고 있다. 그러나 배경 차분 방법만을 이용하여서는 배경이 동적으로 변하는 환경에서 정확한 전경을 추출해 내지 못하는 단점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 정적인 배경과 동적인 배경이 공존하는 환경에서 영역 분할을 효과적으로 수행하는 방법을 제안한다. 제안된 방법은 정적인 배경 영역에 대해서는 기존의 배경 차분방법을 이용하여 전경을 추출하고, 동적인 배경 영역에 대해서는 깊이 정보를 이용하여 전경을 추출하는 하이브리드 방식을 사용한다. 정적인 배경에 동적인 영상을 프로젝터로 투영하는 환경에서 제안된 방법의 효율성을 검증하였다. Foreground segmentation methods have steadily been researched in the field of computer vision. Especially, background subtraction which extracts a foreground image from the difference between the current frame and a reference image, called as "background image" have been widely used for a variety of real-time applications because of low computation and high-quality. However, if the background scene was dynamically changed, the background subtraction causes lots of errors. In this paper, we propose an efficient background subtraction method in dynamic environment with both static and dynamic scene. The proposed method is a hybrid method that uses the conventional background subtraction for static scene and depth information for dynamic scene. Its validity and efficiency are verified by demonstration in dynamic environment, where a video projector projects various images in the background.
