Effect of IgY on Periodontitis and Halitosis Induced by Fusobacterium nucleatum

( Fang Wang ),( Wu Qiao ),( Bin Bao ),( Shujun Wang ),( Joe Mac Regenstein ),( Yilei Shi ),( Wenhui Wu ),( Ming Ma ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2019 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.29 No.2

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a morbific agent in periodontitis and halitosis. Egg yolk antibody (IgY) was obtained from egg yolks from chickens stimulated with F. nucleatum. This study was to assess the effectiveness of IgY on periodontitis and halitosis caused by F. nucleatum in vitro and in vivo. The growth of F. nucleatum was inhibited (p <0. 05) by different concentrations of IgY in vitro and the results of a Halimeter show volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) were reduced to 904 ± 57 ppb at a concentration 40 mg/ml of IgY. The changes of fatty acids of F. nucleatum were determined using GC-MS. The scores for odor index of rat saliva were decreased. The major constituent of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including short-chain acids decreased 46.2% in 10 mg/ml IgY, ammonia decreased 70% in 40 mg/ml IgY, while aldehydes and olefine ketones were almost unchanged. The ELISA assay revealed that IL-6 and TNF-α were decreased after 4 weeks’ IgY treatment. Morphometric (X-ray) and histological analyses (HE) showed that IgY reduced alveolar bone loss and collagen fibers became orderly in rat models. As a result, IgY may have the potential to treat periodontitis and halitosis.

Seismic Analysis and Evaluation of Y-shaped EBF with an Innovative SSL-SSBC

        Shujun Hu,Sizhi Zeng,Jingang Xiong,Xuefei Wang,Qiang Zhou,Xiong Xinfu 한국강구조학회 2020 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.20 No.3

During severe earthquakes, the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of shear links in Y-shaped eccentrically braced frames (EBFs) are crucial to achieve desirable seismic performance and structural safety. In this study, an innovative SSLSSBC combining the advantages of a shear slotted bolted connection (SSBC) and a very short shear link is developed to improve the seismic performance of Y-shaped EBFs. Finite element (FE) analysis methods are fi rst validated through comparison with existing experimental results for slotted bolted connection and very short shear links. Further, FE simulations of the SSBC, very short shear link with shear slotted bolted connection (SSL-SSBC), and Y-shaped EBF are conducted to determine their mechanical behavior systematically. The FE results demonstrate that a reasonable SSBC can eff ectively increase the ductility and energy dissipation capacity through friction slipping, allowing the SSBC to maintain elastic behavior throughout the entire range of seismic loading, while the very short shear link in the SSL-SSBC could undergo severe damage to dissipate seismic energy. As expected, the SSL-SSBC is capable of working as both a shear dissipation damper and a metallic ductile damper in the Y-shaped EBF. This study also clearly identifi es that no yielding or damage of the very short shear links occurs during small and medium earthquakes, and the deformation and damage of the very short shear link can be minimized during severe earthquakes, allowing the seismic resilience capacity of the Y-shaped EBF to be dramatically enhanced.

Role of Interleukin-4 (IL-4) in Respiratory Infection and Allergy Caused by Early-Life Chlamydia Infection

( Shujun Li ),( Lijuan Wang ),( Yulong Zhang ),( Long Ma ),( Jing Zhang ),( Jianbing Zu ),( Xuecheng Wu ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2021 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.31 No.8

Chlamydia pneumoniae is a type of pathogenic gram-negative bacteria that causes various respiratory tract infections including asthma. Chlamydia species infect humans and cause respiratory infection by rupturing the lining of the respiratory which includes the throat, lungs and windpipe. Meanwhile, the function of interleukin-4 (IL-4) in Ch. pneumoniae respiratory infection and its association with the development of airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in adulthood and causing allergic airway disease (AAD) are not understood properly. We therefore investigated the role of IL-4 in respiratory infection and allergy caused by early life Chlamydia infection. In this study, Ch. pneumonia strain was propagated and cultured in HEp-2 cells according to standard protocol and infant C57BL/6 mice around 3-4 weeks old were infected to study the role of IL-4 in respiratory infection and allergy caused by early life Chlamydia infection. We observed that IL-4 is linked with Chlamydia respiratory infection and its absence lowers respiratory infection. IL-4R α2 is also responsible for controlling the IL-4 signaling pathway and averts the progression of infection and inflammation. Furthermore, the IL-4 signaling pathway also influences infection-induced AHR and aids in increasing AAD severity. STAT6 also promotes respiratory infection caused by Ch. pneumoniae and further enhanced its downstream process. Our study concluded that IL-4 is a potential target for preventing infection-induced AHR and severe asthma.

The Expression and Relationship of CD68-Tumor-Associated Macrophages and Microvascular Density With the Prognosis of Patients With Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

        Shujun Sun,Xinliang Pan,Limin Zhao,Jianming Zhou,Hongzeng Wang,Yonghong Sun 대한이비인후과학회 2016 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.9 No.3

Objectives. We sought to identify the expression of CD68-tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and CD34-microvascular density (MVD) in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC), to study the relationship with clinical pathological parameters and to determine whether their expression is predictive of disease. Methods. Pathologically confirmed 45 LSCC tissue and 20 peritumoral non-tumor tissue were examined. Immunohistochemical studies were used to detect the expression of CD68-TAMs and CD34-MVD. Results. The positive expression rate of CD68 in LSCC tissue was 82% (37/45), which was higher than the 10% (2/20) expression rate of the peritumoral tissue (P<0.05). The CD34-MVD positive expression rate in the LSCC tissue was 26.5±6.4, which obviously higher than 12.2±4.0 expression rate of the peritumoral tissue (P<0.05). The positive expression rates of both CD68 and CD34-MVD were higher in the lymph node metastasis (LNM) positive group than in the LNM negative group. The expression of CD68 had positive correlation with CD34-MVD. The 5-year disease-free survival rate in the group with the low CD68 expression was significantly higher than that in the group with high CD68 expression (76% vs. 42%, respectively). Conclusion. The high expression of CD68-TAMs in LSCC and its positive correlation with CD34-MVD illustrates that both play an important role in promoting the metastasis and angiogenesis of this cancer. Their expression was also positively correlated with the prognoses of these patients, suggesting that they could be used as important prognostic markers for LSCC.

An adaptive nonlocal filtering for low-dose CT in both image and projection domains

Wang, Yingmei,Fu, Shujun,Li, Wanlong,Zhang, Caiming Society for Computational Design and Engineering 2015 Journal of computational design and engineering Vol.2 No.2

An important problem in low-dose CT is the image quality degradation caused by photon starvation. There are a lot of algorithms in sinogram domain or image domain to solve this problem. In view of strong self-similarity contained in the special sinusoid-like strip data in the sinogram space, we propose a novel non-local filtering, whose average weights are related to both the image FBP (filtered backprojection) reconstructed from restored sinogram data and the image directly FBP reconstructed from noisy sinogram data. In the process of sinogram restoration, we apply a non-local method with smoothness parameters adjusted adaptively to the variance of noisy sinogram data, which makes the method much effective for noise reduction in sinogram domain. Simulation experiments show that our proposed method by filtering in both image and projection domains has a better performance in noise reduction and details preservation in reconstructed images.

      • Parameters Adaptive Control of Uncertain Chaotic Systems

Shujun Liang,Haiyan Liu,Ruiqi Wang,Junwei Lei 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Hybrid Information Techno Vol.9 No.12

The bound of static uncertain function of chaotic system is required to be known by using adaptive method in many past research papers. Or many papers only considered the situation of the systems with simple uncertain nonlinear functions. In this paper, a kind of generalized chaotic systems are taken as an example, and an adaptive control algorithm with static uncertain nonlinear functions is proposed to control chaotic systems. The requirements for nonlinear function of system is relaxed by using the proposed algorithm. It only requires that the bound of the nonlinear functions in the system model exists and some part of it is known. At last, detailed numerical simulation is done to testify the rightness of the proposed method. It shows that the stabilization and tracking of chaotic system with static uncertain functions can be realized with a quick response by using the proposed algorithm.

Thermo-mechanical strong coupling analysis on braking device of pipe belt conveyor

Yao Wang,Shujun Li,Wenjun Meng 대한기계학회 2018 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.32 No.3

In this study, the formula to calculate the impact factor of coupling (ξ) was proposed, considering the thermo-mechanical coupling problem of friction pairs for braking device during braking. First, a correlation between independent physical field parameters was provided by analyzing the interaction parameters of stress and temperature field. Next, the thermal analysis and thermo-mechanical strong coupling analysis were completed for friction pairs using heat transfer module and structural mechanics module of COMSOL multiphysics software on the basis of the actual operating situation of a pipe belt conveyor. The distribution and variation characteristics of the temperature and stress fields were studied with comparative analysis for braking friction pairs during braking. The mathematical expression on the impact factor of coupling (ξ) depending on braking time (t) was established. Finally, the model with thermo-mechanical strong coupling analysis was verified and compared with the thermal analysis model in terms of the measured surface temperature during braking. Simulation results revealed that the impact factor of coupling (ξ) decreased with braking time (t). However, the change rate of function initially decreased and then increased with time. An inflection point existed at t = 1.5396 s in the function ξ of t. In comparison with the small fluctuation of the simulations with thermal analysis model, the simulations with thermo-mechanical strong coupling analysis model were in good agreement with the trend of experimental results, and all the maximum relative errors were less than 4 %. Thus, the simulation with thermo-mechanical strong coupling analysis was more reliable than thermal analysis. This work could provide valuable insights in solving complex multiphysics coupling analysis.

      • A technique for capturing structural crack geometry in numerical simulation based on the invariant level set method

        Tao Wang,Shangtao Hu,Menggang Yang,Shujun Fang 국제구조공학회 2023 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.87 No.3

Engineering structures usually suffer from cracks. The crack geometry has an influence on the structural mechanical properties and subsequent crack propagations. However, as an extensively utilized method in fracture analysis, the extended finite element method provided by Abaqus fails to output the specific location and dimensions of fractures. In this study, a technique to capture the crack geometry is proposed. The technique is based on the invariant level set method (I-LSM), which can avoid updating the level set function during crack development. The solution is achieved by an open-source plug-in programmed by Python. Three examples were performed to verify the effectiveness and robustness of the program. The result shows that the developed program can accurately output the crack geometry in both the 2D and 3D models. The open-source plug-in codes are included as supplementary material.

Dietary phosphorus deficiency impaired growth, intestinal digestion and absorption function of meat ducks

        Huimin Xu,Shujun Dai,Keying Zhang,Xuemei Ding,Shiping Bai,Jianping Wang,Huanwei Peng,Qiufeng Zeng 아세아·태평양축산학회 2019 Animal Bioscience Vol.32 No.12

Objective: An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary non-phytate phosphorus (nPP) deficiency on intestinal pH value, digestive enzyme activity, morphology, nutrient utilization, and gene expression of NaPi-IIb in meat ducks from 1 to 21 d of age. Methods: A total of 525 one-d-old Cherry Valley ducklings were fed diets (with 7 pens of 15 ducklings, or 105 total ducklings, on each diet) with five levels of nPP (0.22%, 0.34%, 0.40%, 0.46%, or 0.58%) for 21 d in a completely randomized design. Five experimental diets contained a constant calcium (Ca) content of approximately 0.9%. Body weight (BW), body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI), and feed to gain ratio (F:G) were measured at 14 and 21 d of age. Ducks were sampled for duodenum and jejunum digestion and absorption function on 14 and 21 d. Nutrient utilization was assessed using 25- to 27-d-old ducks. Results: The results showed ducks fed 0.22% nPP had lower (p<0.05) growth performance and nutrient utilization and higher (p<0.05) serum Ca content and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. When dietary nPP levels were increased, BW (d 14 and 21), BWG and FI (all intervals), and the serum phosphorus (P) content linearly and quadratically increased (p<0.05); and the jejunal pH value (d 14), duodenal muscle layer thickness (d 14), excreta dry matter, crude protein, energy, Ca and total P utilization linearly increased (p<0.05); however, the serum ALP activity, jejunal Na+-K+-ATPase activity, and duodenal NaPi-IIb mRNA level (d 21) linearly decreased (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results indicated that ducks aged from 1 to 21 d fed diets with 0.22% nPP had poor growth performance related to poor intestinal digestion and absorption ability; but when fed diets with 0.40%, 0.46%, and 0.58% nPP, ducks presented a better growth performance, intestinal digestion and absorption function.
