Sediment quality assessment guidelines(SQAGs) for seven trace elements were suggested to build an assessment system of freshwater sediment quality for a regulatory program in Korea. In this study, current one-step SQAGs were divided into three levels based on the probability of toxicity occurrence, namely, the threshold-effect-level(TEL), the probable-effect-level(PEL), and the apparent-effect-threshold(AET). A sediment toxicity database consisting of field-collected sediments and toxicity results from three different species were used to derive TEL, PEL, and AET. The ambient background concentrations of trace elements in freshwater sediments were used instead of the TEL values because TEL values were lower than the ambient background levels. To validate the reliability of the new SQAGs, a separate sediment toxicity database based on G. sobaegensis was used. When the mean quotient value for the PEL was 0.34, the reliability reached a maximum of 87% with a positive predictive value of 94% and a negative predictive value of 85%. These results showed the newly derived SQAGs were very useful for assessing and predicting the toxicity of field sediments in Korea. Finally, ambient background concentrations, a mean quotient of PEL of 0.34, and AETs were used to classify the quality of the field-collected sediments into four categories.

This study examined the chromosomal characteristics of Atractylodes japonical and A. macrocephala. Cytogenetic analysis based on the physical mapping of the species-specific RAPD fragments and the telomere sequence repeats was performed using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Physical mapping using FISH showed that the signals for the species-specific RAPD fragments, AjR1 and AmR1, were distributed over the entire chromosome and exhibited species-specific characteristics. Therefore, these two markers can be used for the chromosomal identification of A. japonica and A. macrocephala. Strong signals for the telomere sequences repeats were detected at the ends of each chromatid in both plants. However, one pair of chromosomes (chromosomes 2) in A. macrocephala did not show this telomeric signal. In conclusion, telomere sequence repeats can be used as an efficient chromosomal marker for discriminating between A. japonica and A. macrocephala.

We present two cases of deep cerebral venous thrombosis(DCVT) with the totally occluded straight sinus. A 42-year-old female received with altered mentality . She has taken antihistamine for six years to treat the paranasal sinusitis. Another 34-year-old female who used the oral contraceptive for 11 months presented with acute behavior change . Both of these patients were diagnosed by computed tomography(CT), magnetic resonance(MR) imaging, and cerebral angiography. They were fully recovered with systemic urokinase thrombolysis followed by heparin therapy. We report that the intravenous thrombolysis was potentially effective management strategy in our cases of DCVT with the totally occluded straight sinus.
