Comprehensive measurements of chemical, physical, and radiative properties of aerosols have been made at a new Japanese super site for aerosol measurements (Cape Hedo Atmosphere and Aerosol Monitoring Station: CHAAMS) in Okinawa. Particulate nitrate concentrations were measured both with an aerosol mass spectrometer (PM1) and a nitrate monitor (PM10) simultaneously in 2006. NO₃? in Okinawa exists mostly in coarse mode. On the other hand, NO₃? was observed at several ground sites in China (Qingdao, Dalian, Zhoushan, etc.) in 2002-2006. In the emission source area of China, NO₃? existed mainly in fine mode. Clear contrast was observed. Moreover, the fraction of NO₃? contained in fine particles decreased and the fraction of that contained in coarse particles increased according to the transport time from China to Okinawa calculated by back trajectory analyses. Fraction of gaseous species (NOx+HNO₃g) in NOy decreased and fraction of particulate NO₃? increased in the same manner. Chemical transformation takes place during the long range transport.

Although substantial progress has been made in understanding the mechanisms underlying the expression of mtDNA-encoded polypeptides, the regulatory factors involved in mitoribosome-mediated synthesis and simultaneous insertion of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) polypeptides into the inner membrane of mitochondria are still unclear. In the present study, disruption of the mouse Crif1 gene, which encodes a mitochondrial protein, resulted in a profound deficiency in OXPHOS caused by the disappearance of OXPHOS subunits and complexes in vivo. CRIF1 was associated with large mitoribosomal subunits that were located close to the polypeptide exit tunnel, and the elimination of CRIF1 led to both aberrant synthesis and defective insertion of mtDNA-encoded nascent OXPHOS polypeptides into the inner membrane. CRIF1 interacted with nascent OXPHOS polypeptides and molecular chaperones, e.g., Tid1. Taken together, these results suggest that CRIF1 plays a critical role in the integration of OXPHOS polypeptides into the mitochondrial membrane in mammals.

<P>Field observations to investigate the correlation between New Particle Formation (NPF) and the long-range transport of air pollutants in the East Asia region were carried out on a rural Island of Japan in the East-China Sea (Fukue Island, 32.8 degrees N, 128.7 degrees E) over three periods (February 23 to March 7, 2013; November 7 to 20, 2013; and November 2 to 24, 2014). Frequent NPF events were identified (16 events in 50 days), typically in association with sudden increases in particle number concentrations and the successive growth of particles to mobility diameters of several tens of nanometers. The NPF events were classified into two types (A and B) according to the initially detected particle sizes (onset diameters). Type-A consisted of strong NPF events with onset diameters as small as 5 nm. Type-B consisted of NPF events whose onset (<10 nm) was not clearly identifiable. The correlations of SO2 concentrations, solar radiation, PM2.5 concentrations, and chemical composition were analyzed based on the types of NPF events. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.</P>
An Assistant System for Riding a Unicycle

The final purpose of this study is to design a control system to assist in the skill of riding a unicycle. To realize such a system, it is necessary to make a mathematical model and to analyze the dynamics of the unicycle. It is ideal that the dynamics of a unicycle is kept as original as possible even if any automatic support control is required to assist the operator. Thus, this paper presents modeling of the unicycle and a control system design by the controlled Lagrangian to realize this type of controller.
