        The reproduction potentials of four entomopathogenic nematode strains related to cost-effective production for biological control

        Bioassays to evaluate the mortality, virulence and reproduction potentials of four indigenous EPN strains, SPQ16, S-BM12, H-KT3987 and H-CB3452 on insect larvae of mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) and greater wax moth (Galleria mellonella) revealed the highest mortality rates of two insect larvae at the highest inoculation dose of 100 IJs to range from 89 to 100 percent and 94.3–100 percent at 48 h after inoculation, respectively. Virulence was high for all nematode strains, with LC 50 values between 29.6 and 47.3 IJs/insect host. The highest IJ yields were different between nematode strains and insect host, from 66.8 × 10 3 IJs (S-PQ16) to 118.6 × 10 3 IJs (HKT3987) on T. molitor, and from 54.2 × 10 3 IJs (S-BM12) to 163.3 × 10 3 IJs (H-KT3987) on G. mellonella. The culturing cost in terms of food expenditure for rearing insect larvae varied between insect larvae and nematode strains, from 6.76 to 26.63 USD per billion IJs for nematode strains cultured on T. molitor larvae and from 3.54 to 7.81 USD per billion IJs for nematode strains cultured on G. mellonella larvae. The full cost for a nematode product of 2.5 × 10 9 IJs per hectare, produced through in vivo mass culturing, of the most efficient nematode strain, H-KT3987, was 191.3 USD, slightly cheaper than 199.4 USD for the same nematode product produced through in vitro mass culturing.

        School-based nutrition interventions can improve bone health in children and adolescents

        Objectives: Osteoporosis is a major global health problem, and optimizing bone health during childhood and adolescence with adequate calcium and vitamin D intake is a recommendation to prevent the disease. School milk programs may be a viable approach to help children and adolescents increase calcium and vitamin D intakes while improving their bone health. Methods: A review of the literature was conducted on school milk programs, including examination of details regarding these studies and their participants, and assessments of their effects on bone health in children and adolescents. Results: Nearly all studies reviewed showed significant increases in the bone health behaviors and outcomes that were measured, such as bone mineral density, milk consumption, and calcium and vitamin D intake. Conclusions: School milk programs can be effective in improving bone health in children and adolescents, and public health policies should be considered to help support and fund effective programs that promote bone health and prevent osteoporosis in population health.

        Osteoporosis knowledge assessment and osteoporosis education recommendations in the health professions

        A previous systematic review on osteoporosis knowledge published showed that only several studies investigated osteoporosis knowledge in health professionals, and it found that their knowledge was not as adequate and sufficient as it should be. Since then, studies published on osteoporosis knowledge among health professionals have also assessed and found that they still do not have adequate and sufficient osteoporosis knowledge. To increase and improve osteoporosis knowledge among health professionals, recommendations in osteoporosis education in the health professions, including the application of the cognitive load theory, online learning, problem-based learning, practical learning, simulationbased learning, interactive learning, and feedback are covered in order to ensure health professionals can have adequate and sufficient osteoporosis knowledge to best prevent and treat individuals with the disease. © 2016 The Korean Society of Osteoporosis.         Osteoporosis prevention and osteoporosis exercise in community-based public health programs

        Osteoporosis is a serious public health concern worldwide, and community-based public health programs that increase osteoporosis preventive behaviors are ideal to combat this major public health issue. A review of community-based public health programs for osteoporosis prevention show that programs vary in numerous ways and have mixed results in increasing osteoporosis preventive behaviors, although most programs have had success in significantly increasing calcium intake, only a few programs have had success in significantly increasing weightbearing exercise. Regarding calcium intake, all community-based public health programs that implemented: 1) at least one theoretical behavior change model, such as the health belief model, or 2) bone mineral density (BMD) testing for osteoporosis screening, have shown success in significantly increasing calcium intake. As community-based public health programs for osteoporosis prevention have shown limited success in increasing weight-bearing exercise, an additional review of community-based public health programs incorporating osteoporosis exercise showed that they have high compliance rates to increase weight-bearing exercise, but require high-intensity weight-bearing exercise of 80e85% 1-repetition maximum to significantly increase BMD to prevent osteoporosis. In the prevention of osteoporosis, for community-based public health programs to be most effective, they should implement theoretical behavior change models and/or BMD testing for osteoporosis screening, along with high-intensity resistance training. Recommendations for future research to further study effective community-based public health programs are also provided.

        Effect of Light-emitting Diode Irradiation during Healing and Acclimatization Period on the Survival Rate and Seedlings Quality of Grafted Pepper

        The objective of this study was to evaluate influence of light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation during grafting period on the survival rate and quality of grafted pepper seedlings. Irradiation by six light treatments (darkness, white fluorescent lamps (WFL), blue LED, red LED, red+blue LED (1:1), far-red LED) was used to treat grafted pepper seedlings for 10 days during healing and acclimatization period. The maximum (100%) survival rate was recorded in red LED and blue+red LED treatments, but it was not statistically different with the WFL treatment. The lowest survival rate was also observed in the darkness treatment. The growth characteristics of grafted seedlings in red LED were similar with those in blue+red LED treatment, but they were greater than those in darkness, WFL, blue LED, and far-red LED treatments. Stem diameter, leaf number, and leaf area were similar between seedlings treated with WFL, blue LED, red LED, and blue+red LED, but they decreased in seedlings treated with darkness and far-red LED. Fresh and dry weight of shoot and root were similar between seedlings treated with red LED and blue+red LED, but they decreased in seedlings treated with WFL, blue LED, far-red LED, and darkness. The lowest of fresh and dry weights of shoot and root were observed in the darkness treatment. Seedlings treated with red LED, blue+red LED, and WFL were significantly more compact than that in darkness, blue LED, and far-red LED treatments. The root morphology was improved in seedlings treated with red LED by increasing total root surface, total root length, and number of toot tips.

        Thermocapillary migration of a fluid compound droplet

        Compound and simple droplets have been studied and appeared in many life applications, e.g., drug processing and microfluidic systems. Many studies have been conducted on the thermocapillary effects on simple droplets, but similar studies on compound droplets are quite rare. Filling this missing gap, this paper presents the front-tracking-based simulation results of the thermocapillary effects on compound droplets in a certain limited domain. The compound droplet consists of a single inner core that is initially concentric with the outer one. Various dimensionless parameters including Reynolds number from 1 to 50, Marangoni number from 1 to 100, droplet radius ratio from 0.3 to 0.8, and viscosity ratios from 0.1 to 6.4 are varied to reveal their influences on the migration of a compound droplet from cold to hot regions. Initially, the inner droplet moves faster than the outer one, and when the leading surface of the inner droplet touches the outer one, the inner and outer droplets migrate at the same speed. The effects of these parameters on the compound droplet eccentricity are also considered.

        Numerical study of the indentation formation of a compound droplet in a constriction

        A compound droplet deforming in a constricted tube widely appears in drug delivery and microfluidic devices. In such a constriction, an indentation can present at the trailing surface of the droplet. However, this aspect has not been fully investigated and understood so far. This study focuses on the effects of some dimensionless parameters on the negative curvature, i.e., indentation, at the trailing surface of a compound droplet moving through a constricted tube. The presence of the constriction at the middle of the tube length enhances the droplet indentation. Numerical results were obtained for the capillary number Ca (varied in range of 0.1 - 1.0), the inner-to-outer droplet radius ratio R 21 (varied in range of 0.2 - 0.9), the droplet-to-tube radius ratio R 10 (varied in range of 0.2 - 0.9), the inner-to-outer interfacial tension coefficient ratio σ 21 (varied in range of 0.1 - 6.4), and the normalized depth of the constriction d/R (varied in range of 0.0 - 0.8). The results reveal that the most influencing factor is Ca, increasing its value leads to the increment of the maximum indentation at the trailing surface of the inner and outer droplets. The indentation is also increased with increasing the value of R 10and d/R. In contrast, increasing R 21 results in a decrease in the indentation at the trailing surface of the outer droplet. When increasing σ 21 , the indentation at the trailing surface of the inner one is quickly suppressed, while the outer droplet is minorly affected. We also point out the patterns of the trailing surface of the inner and outer droplets and their transitions from one to the other patterns in the diagrams based on these parameters.
