The purpose of this study is to develop strategies for inquiry-based fieldwork to help understand geographic concepts and multi-sensory fieldwork to consider diverse sensory experiences using Yeongdo in Busan as an example case. Specifically, topics for inquiry-based fieldwork include positive and negative aspects of urban regeneration and the Dongsam marine cluster. For multi-sensory fieldwork, this study focuses on components of soundscape and smellscape and a strange look strategy. This article provides insight into designing and performing inquiry-based and multi-sensory fieldwork in diverse contexts. In discussion, this research notes the potential of mobile technologies and virtual reality in enhancing fieldwork experience and furthermore emphasizes the necessity of fieldwork pedagogical and content knowledge. The scope of geographic fieldwork will be extended through research that provides specific strategies from various perspectives.

OBJECTIVES: The escalating burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a critical public health issue worldwide. CVD, especially acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and stroke, is the leading contributor to morbidity and mortality in Korea. We aimed to develop algorithms for identifying AMI and stroke events from the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database and validate these algorithms through medical record review. METHODS: We first established a concept and definition of “hospitalization episode,” taking into account the unique features of health claims-based NHIS database. We then developed first and recurrent event identification algorithms, separately for AMI and stroke, to determine whether each hospitalization episode represents a true incident case of AMI or stroke. Finally, we assessed our algorithms’ accuracy by calculating their positive predictive values (PPVs) based on medical records of algorithm-identified events. RESULTS: We developed identification algorithms for both AMI and stroke. To validate them, we conducted retrospective review of medical records for 3,140 algorithm-identified events (1,399 AMI and 1,741 stroke events) across 24 hospitals throughout Korea. The overall PPVs for the first and recurrent AMI events were around 92% and 78%, respectively, while those for the first and recurrent stroke events were around 88% and 81%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: We successfully developed algorithms for identifying AMI and stroke events. The algorithms demonstrated high accuracy, with PPVs of approximately 90% for first events and 80% for recurrent events. These findings indicate that our algorithms hold promise as an instrumental tool for the consistent and reliable production of national CVD statistics in Korea.
Topological quantum phase transitions driven by external electric fields in Sb2Te3 thin films.
Kim, Minsung,Kim, Choong H,Kim, Heung-Sik,Ihm, Jisoon National Academy of Sciences 2012 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF Vol.109 No.3

Using first-principles calculations, we show that topological quantum phase transitions are driven by external electric fields in thin films of Sb(2)Te(3). The film, as the applied electric field normal to its surface increases, is transformed from a normal insulator to a topological insulator or vice versa depending on the film thickness. We identify the band topology by directly calculating the Z(2) invariant from electronic wave functions. The dispersion of edge states is also found to be consistent with the bulk band topology in view of the bulk-boundary correspondence. We present possible applications of the topological phase transition as an on/off switch of the topologically protected edge states in nano-scale devices.

With the advent of various heat sources and increasing demand for electric power, interest in closed Brayton cycles is increasing. For an open Brayton cycle for typical gas turbine applications, there are diverse options to adjust the cycle through a flow control of air-fuel mixture or a speed control of turbomachines. However, in the case of a closed Brayton cycle, the amount of ‘closed’ working fluid inside the cycle is constrained and the control of the cycle is limited to the speed of the turbomachines. In this paper, the alternative approach to reflect the characteristics of the closed Brayton cycle is introduced to set the turbine inlet condition unconstrained. Instead, the charge amount of working fluid is set as a constraint. From this, the influence of the charge amount on the cycle performances is analyzed and the optimum charge amount for the given operating conditions is obtained. Using the results of this research, the charge amount can be considered for the design and control parameter of the closed Brayton cycle. Also, the performance of the closed Brayton cycle can be improved by implementing a proper inventory control strategy during off-design operation.

Performance simulator for a manual tansmision test is developed. Firstly, dynamic models for two types of clutch control actuator are obtained, and efficiencies of CHC and CSC control actuators are evaluated. In addition, dynamic models of the MT powertrain are obtained and MT vehicle performance simulator is developed. Using the simulator, vehicle performance such as MT input torque, acceleration, etc. are investigated. It is expected that the MT performance smulator developed in this study can be used in design of clutch and MT system.
