• Portfolio Selection Model for Enhancing Information Technology Synergy

        Wooje Cho,Shaw, Michael J. IEEE 2013 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT - Vol.60 No.4

This paper presents a methodological framework for IT project selection that focuses on the impact of synergy enhancement on portfolio return and risk. As the size of firms' IT investments continues to increase, the demand for strong methodologies for IT portfolio selection has been increasing. Using the mean-variance efficient frontier as a tool to balance portfolio return and portfolio risk, we develop a model for IT portfolio selection. Unlike existing IT portfolio selection models, in this framework, the enhanceable project interdependency, project synergy, is distinguished from the inherent project interdependency, project covariance. This model enables firms to examine the effect of synergy enhancement on project portfolio risk and highlights the benefit of portfolio management of IT projects.

Defining the Normal Trends of Serum Creatine Kinase Levels Following Spinal Surgery

        Matthew Griffith,Kenneth Aaron Shaw,Michael Baird,Patrick Rushford,Victoria Shaw,Aaron Roberts,David M. Gloystein 대한척추외과학회 2019 Asian Spine Journal Vol.13 No.3

Study Design: Prospective, prognostic study, level II evidence. Purpose: To define the normal change in the creatine kinase (CK) levels in patients undergoing prone or supine lumbar or cervical spine surgery and to determine if positioning influences the postoperative changes in the CK levels. Overview of Literature: Spine surgery is one of the most commonly performed and fastest growing areas of surgery in the United States. Thus, the various possible complications need to be understood, and risk factors for these complications need to be mitigated. One of the rare complications, reported in the literature as small case series and case reports, is rhabdomyolysis, diagnosed by high CK levels. Thus far, very few studies have examined the rise in CK levels following spine surgery, and to our knowledge, none has assessed the potential association of surgical positioning and the rise in CK levels. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 94 patients. We obtained their preoperative CK levels, and re-assessed their CK levels at postoperative day (POD) 1, 2, and 3, as well as at their 2-week follow-up. The data were analyzed with respect to the spine level and positioning to determine if positioning had any effect on the postoperative rise in the CK level. Results: Total 94 consecutive patients were enrolled in this study. The average preoperative CK level was 179.64, and the average CK level was 847.04 on POD 1. Prone positioning showed a greater rise in the CK levels following surgery than the supine positioning. In a similar manner, lumbar procedures led to a larger rise in the CK levels than cervical surgery. Prone/lumbar surgery showed the largest increase among all groups. Finally, revision surgery and instrumentation both increased the postoperative CK levels. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that positioning can affect the postoperative CK level rise, with patients undergoing prone/lumbar surgery showing the greatest rise in the postoperative CK levels. This rise, however, may be related to paraspinal muscle damage, rather than the positioning itself.

Use of Dietary Management in Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Results of a Survey of Over 1500 United States Gastroenterologists

( Adrienne Lenhart ),( Courtney Ferch ),( Michael Shaw ),( William D Chey ) 대한소화기기능성질환·운동학회(구 대한소화관운동학회) 2018 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.24 No.3

Background/Aims Dietary therapy is increasingly used to manage gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We aim to gauge United States gastroenterologists’ perceptions of dietary therapies for IBS. Methods We distributed a 22-question survey to members of the American College of Gastroenterology. The survey was developed by gastroenterologists and survey methodologists. We collected information pertaining to demographics, providers’ interpretation of their patients’ views on dietary therapy, and gastroenterologists’ perceptions on dietary therapy, and nutritional counseling in IBS. Results One thousand five hundred and sixty-two (14%) surveys were collected. Nearly 60% of participants reported that patients commonly associate food with GI symptoms. IBS patients most commonly use a trial and error approach followed by a lactose-free and glutenfree diet, and rarely use a low fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAP) diet on their own. Over half of providers recommend diet therapy to > 75% of IBS patients and most commonly recommend a low FODMAP diet. Only 21% of gastroenterologists commonly refer IBS patients to registered dietitians, and only 30% use GI dietitians. Female providers were more likely than males to recommend dietary changes as the primary mode of therapy (OR, 1.43 [1.09-1.88]; P = 0.009). Conclusions Our national survey identified enthusiasm for diet treatment of IBS. While patients infrequently tried a low FODMAP diet on their own, GI providers commonly recommended this diet. Only a minority of GI providers refer their IBS patients to a registered dietitian for nutrition counseling and few refer patients to dietitians with specialized GI training. Female providers were more enthusiastic about diet therapies than males. (J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2018;24:437-451)

Adaptive Scheduling in Flexible Manufacturing Systems

        Park, Sang Chan,Raman, Narayan,Shaw, Michael J. 한국경영과학회 1996 經營 科學 Vol.13 No.1

This paper develops an adaptive scheduling policy for flexible manufacturing systems. The inductive learning methodology used for constructing this state-dependent scheduling policy provides an understanding of the relative importance of the various system parameters in determining the appropriate scheduling rule. Experimental studies indicated the superiority of the suggested approach over the alternative approach involving the repeated application of a single scheduling rule for randomly generated test problems as well as a real system, and under both stationary and nonstationary conditions. In particular, its relative performance improves further when there are frequent disruptions, and when disruptions are caused by the introduction of tight due date jobs, one of the most common sources of disruptions in most manufacturing systems.

Polyphenolic Contents and the Effects of Methanol Extracts from Mango Varieties on Breast Cancer Cells

Van Le Thu Hoang,Jean-Thomas Pierson,Merril Carmel Curry,Paul Nicholas Shaw,Ralf Georg Dietzgen,Michael John Gidley,Sarah Jane Roberts-Thomson,Gregory Raymond Monteith 한국식품과학회 2015 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.24 No.1

Bioactivities of peel and flesh extracts of 3 genetically diverse mango (Mangifera indica L.) varieties were studied. Nam Doc Mai peel extracts, containing the largest amounts of polyphenols, were associated with an effect on MCF-7 viable cell numbers with an IC50 (dose required for 50% inhibition of cell viability) of 56 μg/mL and significantly (p<0.01) induced cell death in MDA-MB- 231 cells, compared with other varieties. Hydrophilic fractions of Nam Doc Mai peel extracts had the highest bioactivity values against both MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells. Soluble polyphenols were present in the largest amounts in most hydrophilic fractions. The Nam Doc Mai mango variety contains high levels of fruit peel bioactivity, which appears to be related to the nature of the polyphenol composition.

Cretaceous beetles of the Jinju Formation (Coleoptera): An overview of the Jinju Formation, its coleopteran diversity, and past and future research

        Lee Soo Bin,Li Yan-Da,Cai Chenyang,Engel Michael S.,Nam Gi Soo,Park Jong Kyun,Nel André,Jenkins Shaw Josh,Jouault Corentin,Legalov Andrei,Kundrata Robin 한국응용곤충학회 2024 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.27 No.2

Several Coleoptera fossils, including Coptoclavidae, Elateridae, Ommatidae, and Staphylinidae, were previously described from the Jinju Formation (Albian), South Korea. However, numerous beetle fossils require further research to fully understand the biodiversity of this important Cretaceous deposit. In this study, we present an overview of the diversity of Coleoptera from the Jinju Formation. Future studies on beetles of the Jinju For mation will be divided into several parts corresponding to the major lineages found in this Albian deposit. In this first part, we introduce the geological context, review previous studies related to Coleoptera fossils from the Jinju Formation, and present specimens that will undergo detailed examination in subsequent papers.
