The objective of this study was to evaluate the magnified endoscopic findings in the diagnosis of follicular lymphoma in the small intestine in comparison with those of intestinal follicular lymphoma and lymphangiectasia. Four patients with follicular lymphoma and 3 with lymphangiectasia in the small intestine were retrospectively analyzed. A prototype magnifying single-balloon enteroscope was used. The findings of the intestinal follicular lymphoma and lymphangiectasia were retrospectively analyzed to determine the magnified endoscopic findings of follicular lymphoma in the small intestine. Opaque white granules were observed in 3 of the 4 patients with follicular lymphoma. Magnified narrow-band imaging (NBI) of the opaque white granules showed stretched microvessels, which had a diminutive tree-like appearance. The remaining patient had no opaque white granules and only displayed whitish villi. Magnified NBI observation of the whitish villi revealed the absence of marginal villus epithelium, which was confirmed by histology. The magnified NBI enteroscopy revealed the diminutive tree-like appearance on the opaque white granules and the absence of marginal villus epithelium of the whitish villi in intestinal follicular lymphoma. These findings may be useful in diagnosing follicular lymphoma. (Intest Res 2018;16:628-634)
Synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes using laser-vaporized metal nanoparticle catalyst

SWNTs were synthesized by laser-vaporized CCVD (catalytic chemical vapor deposition). The diameter distributions and the abundance of SWNTs synthesized at different temperatures and using different catalysts were investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Further,this technique was compared with other synthesis techniques (laser-oven and conventional-alcohol CCVD), and C_60 was synthesized simultaneously as a byproduct only using the laser-oven technique. With increasing synthesis temperature, the diameter distribution shifted towards larger diameters, and the G/D ratio became larger as the synthesis temperature increased to 1000°C. Ni, Co, and Fe played a catalytic role, though Fe was less effective under our experimental conditions. The diameter distribution of SWNTs synthesized with the Fe catalyst was shifted to smaller values compared to those synthesized with Ni or Co catalysts.

In Japan, referenced shear strength of glued-laminated timber is specified in MLIT (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) Notification No. 1024 in 2001, and there is a difference of strength depending on the direction of stress acting on the material. According to the current Japanese building code, the shear strength in the width direction is set to a small value of 0.78 to 0.88 times to that in the lamination direction. However, there is no technical basis at the time when the standard was established, so early verification and improvement are demanded from researchers and engineers of wooden structure. In this research, three-point bending test, full-scale block shear test and JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) block shear test on glued-laminated timber were conducted. The glued-laminated timber was made of Japanese cedar, Japanese cypress, Scots pine and Douglas fir. Comparing the average value of the shear strength obtained by each test method, it was found that the shear strength in the width direction has the same or higher value than the lamination direction, and there is no tendency like the current building code. Comparing each test method, it was found that different characteristic values were obtained due to influence of size effect and notch effect.

Due to the biological significance and therapeutic potential of Interleukin-3 (IL-3) secreted mainly by activated T cells, various protein expression systems have been challenged to produce recombinant IL3 to meet the increasing demands worldwide. Recently, we established an updated silkworm-based baculovirus expression vector system (silkworm-BEVS), which in most cases, produces eukaryotic proteins in biological or enzymatical active forms with considerable amounts. We attempted to reconstruct and express a recombinant mouse IL-3 (rMmIL-3) with C-terminal His8-Strep tags in silkworm-BEVS in the current study. From our results, we gained an active glycosylated rMmIL-3 protein in a substantial amount and quality. As compared with the E. coli expression system, silkworm-BEVS is a better choice regarding the glycosylations attached in rMmIL-3 and upscalable system in case that a commercial amount is required in the future. Collectively, our method shares an excellent model to produce interleukin molecular for approaching pharmaceutical applications.
