        Normal Mode Vibration of a One-Dimensional Lattice with Two Impurities under a General Boundary Condition

        The derivation of exact analytic expressions for the vibrational characteristics of a linear chain is an important problem in crystal lattice dynamics. The adoption of a periodic boundary condition (PBC) in a one-dimensional lattice with impurities eliminates boundary re ections, inter-impurity interactions, and impurity-boundary interactions. The correct description of the impurity-impurity interaction necessitates the adoption of a more realistic general boundary condition (GBC). The dynamics of a nite one-dimensional lattice with two impurities is studied under the GBC. The normal mode frequencies of vibration are calculated under three possible GBCs: x0(t) and fN(t), x0(t) and xN(t), and f0(t) and fN(t). The eect of the impurity mass on the normal modes is also investigated. The calculated results are in agreement with existing theory.

        Effect of dietary mannanoligosaccharide supplementation on nutrient digestibility, hindgut fermentation, immune response and antioxidant indices in dogs

        Background: Use of prebiotics in companion animal nutrition is often considered advantageous over probiotics because of the ease of handling, ability to withstand processing and storage etc. While most of the studies on prebiotic use in dogs have been done with processed food as basal diet, the response in relation to homemade diet feeding is not very well explored. Methods: The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary mannanoligosaccharide (MOS) supplementation on nutrient digestibility, hindgut fermentation, immune response and antioxidant indices in dogs. Ten Spitz pups were divided into two groups: control (CON) with no supplementation, and experimental (MOS) wherein the basal diet was supplemented with MOS at 15 g/kg diet. All dogs were fed on a home-prepared diet for a period of 150 days. The study protocol included a digestion trial, periodic blood collection and analysis for lipid profile and erythrocytic antioxidants. Immune response of the animals was assessed towards the end of the feeding period. Results: Results revealed no significant (P > 0.05) variations in palatability score, intake and apparent digestibility of nutrients between the groups. Faecal score, faeces voided, faecal pH, concentrations of ammonia, lactate and short-chain fatty acids were comparable (P > 0.05) between the two groups. Cell-mediated immune response, assessed as delayed-type of hypersensitivity response, was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the MOS group. The percent of lymphocyte sub-populations CD4+ and ratio of CD4+:CD8+ were also significantly (P < 0.05) higher in MOS group. The serum IgG levels were similar (P > 0.05) in both the groups. Supplementation of MOS lowered (P < 0.05) serum total- and LDL- cholesterol levels, when compared with the control group. The erythrocytic antioxidant indices were similar (P > 0.05) between the two groups. Conclusions: The results indicated that supplementation of MOS at the rate of 15 g/kg in the diet of dog augmented the cell-mediated immune response and serum lipid profile without any influences on digestibility of nutrients, hindgut fermentation and antioxidants indices.

      • Trends of Smokeless Tobacco use among Adults (Aged 15-49 Years) in Bangladesh, India and Nepal

        Background: Smokeless tobacco (SLT) has long been realized as an important component of the fight for global tobacco control. It still remains a major problem in countries like India, Bangladesh and Nepal. The objective of this study was to estimate the trends of SLT use in three countries of the SEARO WHO office. Materials and Methods: We used data from national surveys in three countries (Bangladesh, India and Nepal) to estimate trends in prevalence of current SLT use. All available nationally representative data sources were used. Estimates were weighted, age standardized and given along with 95% confidence intervals. Significance of linear trend in prevalence over time was tested using the Cochrane-Armitage test for trend. A p value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: We identified three surveys for Bangladesh, three for India and four for Nepal that met the selection criteria (such as Demographic and Health Surveys, WHO-STEPwise approach to Surveillance and Global Adult Tobacco Surveys). A significantly increasing trend was noticed in the prevalence of current SLT use among Bangladeshi men (20.2% to 23%, p=0.03). In India, a similar significantly increasing trend was seen among men (27.1% to 33.4%, p<0.001) and women (10.1% to 15.7%, p<0.001). In Nepal, there was a no significant trend among both men (39.1% to 31.6%, p=0.11) and women (5.6% to 4.7%, p=0.49). Conclusions: In the study countries SLT use has remained at alarmingly high levels. Usage trends do not show any signs of decline in spite of control efforts. Tobacco control measures should focus more on controlling SLT use.

        Circulating Gut-Homing (α<sub>4</sub>β<sub>7</sub><sup>+</sup>) Plasmablast Responses against <i>Shigella</i> Surface Protein Antigens among Hospitalized Patients with Diarrhea

        <P>Developing countries are burdened with Shigella diarrhea. Understanding mucosal immune responses associated with natural Shigella infection is important to identify potential correlates of protection and, as such, to design effective vaccines. We performed a comparative analysis of circulating mucosal plasmablasts producing specific antibodies against highly conserved invasive plasmid antigens (IpaC, IpaD20, and IpaD120) and two recently identified surface protein antigens, pan-Shigella surface protein antigen 1 (PSSP1) and PSSP2, common to all virulent Shigella strains. We examined blood and stool specimens from 37 diarrheal patients admitted to the Infectious Diseases & Beliaghata General Hospital, Kolkata, India. The etiological agent of diarrhea was investigated in stool specimens by microbiological methods and real-time PCR. Gut-homing (alpha(4)beta(+)(7)) antibody secreting cells (ASCs) were isolated from patient blood by means of combined magnetic cell sorting and two-color enzymelinked immunosorbent spot (ELISPOT) assay. Overall, 57% (21 of 37) and 65% (24 of 37) of the patients were positive for Shigella infection by microbiological and real-time PCR assays, respectively. The frequency of alpha(4)beta(+)(7) IgG ASC responders against Ipas was higher than that observed against PSSP1 or PSSP2, regardless of the Shigella serotype isolated from these patients. Thus, alpha(4)beta(+)(7) ASC responses to Ipas may be considered an indirect marker of Shigella infection. The apparent weakness of ASC responses to PSSP1 is consistent with the lack of cross-protection induced by natural Shigella infection. The finding that ASC responses to IpaD develop in patients with recent-onset shigellosis indicates that such responses may not be protective or may wane too rapidly and/or be of insufficient magnitude.</P>

        Effect of Extended Egg Preservation Schedule in Conservation of Mutant Silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) Genetic Stocks in Gene Bank

        Studies on extended egg preservation schedule from 120 days to 180 days was taken up with 20 germplasm accessions of mutant silkworm genetic stocks of Bombyx mori L. Statistical analyses of the data collected over three trials revealed no significant changes both in the qualitative and quantitative traits of the genetic stocks between treatment (6 months egg preservation) and control (4 months egg preservation), except for fifth instar larval duration in TMS-61, TMS-62, TMS64, TMS-31 and TMS-34 shell weight in TMS-62, TMS-64 and TMS-66. Thus, the results indicate that extended schedule of 6 months egg preservation can safely be adopted, which will reduce the cost of conservation and minimize the genetic erosion owing to reduced crop cycle.

      • Selective synthesis of 6,8-di-<i>t</i>-butylated flavan over Zn–Al containing mesoporous silica catalysts

        <P>We demonstrate a much green synthesis method for highly selective synthesis of 6,8-di-<I>t</I>-butylated flavan (6,8-DTBF) by liquid phase alkylation of 2,4-di-<I>t</I>-butylphenol (2,4-DTBP) with cinnamyl alcohol (Cin-OH) over mesoporous Zn–Al–MCM-41 catalysts synthesized under direct basic hydrothermal method. The main alkylated product, 6,8-DTBF is importantly used as an intermediate in the manufacture of biosynthetic organic compounds. The recyclable mesoporous Zn–Al–MCM-41 catalysts have also been reused in this reaction to study their catalytic activities. The influences of various reaction parameters such as temperature, time, ratios of reactant (2,4-DTBP-to-Cin-OH) have been extensively investigated for the synthesis of 6,8-DTBF. In addition, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has also been used as a solvent in this catalytic reaction. The mesoporous Zn–Al–MCM-41(75) gives excellent catalytic activity with 6,8-DTBF selectivity (86.0%) and 2,4-DTBP conversion (63.1%), and these catalytic results have also compared with that obtained using other mesoporous and microporous catalysts. On the basis of catalytic activity obtained by using the all catalysts, the Zn–Al–MCM-41(75) catalyst is found to be a highly active, recyclable and eco-friendly heterogeneous catalyst in the liquid-phase alkylation of 2,4-DTBP.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Zn–Al–MCM-41(75) catalyst is found to be a highly active, recyclable and eco-friendly green catalyst in the liquid-phase alkylation of 2,4-DTBP. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c2dt31409f'> </P>

        Amino acid mediated synthesis of luminescent SnO2 nanoparticles

        Tin oxide (SnO2) nanoparticles of average sizes 6, 16 and 33 nm were synthesized successfully by asimple chemical precipitation method using an amino acid, glycine at different calcination temperaturesof 200, 400, and 600 8C, respectively. This method resulted in the formation of spherical, polycrystallineSnO2 nanoparticles with a higher degree of monodispersity. The sizes of the SnO2 nanoparticles werefound to be a factor of calcination temperature. The synthesized SnO2 nanoparticles have atetragonal rutile structure. Due to three dimensional quantum confinement effect shown by thesynthesized SnO2 nanoparticles in their electronic spectra, an increase in band gap energy (3.85–4.21 eV) is observed with a decrease in particle size ( 33 to 6 nm). The synthesizednanomaterials were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM), and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The optical propertieswere investigated using UV–vis spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). Interestingly, the photoluminescence property was shown by the material calcined at 400 8C. The effects of various polar and non-polar solvents on the absorption spectra of the synthesizedSnO2 nanoparticles were studied. The plausible reaction mechanism for the formation of SnO2nanoparticles was also proposed.

        Genetics of Fusarium Wilt Resistance in Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) and Efficacy of Associated SSR Markers

        Inheritance of resistance to Fusarium wilt (FW) disease caused by Fusarium udum was investigated in pigeonpea using four different long duration FW resistant genotypes viz., BDN-2004-1, BDN-2001-9, BWR-133 and IPA-234. Based on the $F_2$ segregation pattern, FW resistance has been reported to be governed by one dominant gene in BDN-2004-1 and BDN-2001-9, two duplicate dominant genes in BWR-133 and two dominant complimentary genes in resistance source IPA-234. Further, the efficacy of six simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers namely, ASSR-1, ASSR-23, ASSR-148, ASSR-229, ASSR-363 and ASSR-366 reported to be associated with FW resistance were also tested and concluded that markers ASSR-1, ASSR-23, ASSR-148 will be used for screening of parental genotypes in pigeonpea FW resistance breeding programs. The information on genetics of FW resistance generated from this study would be used, to introgress FW resistance into susceptible but highly adopted cultivars through marker-assisted backcross breeding and in conventional breeding programs.
