      • 마이크로파 플라즈마 CVD 방법에 의한 다이아몬드 박막 형성

        High quality diamond films of the silicon on diamond (SOD) structure are deposited using CH₄ and H₂ gas mixture in microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD), a SOD structure is fabricated using low pressure CVD polysilicon of diamond/Si(100) substrate. The crystalline structure of the diamond films which composed of {111} and {100} planes, were changed from octahedral one to cubo-octahedron one as the CH₄ ratios are increased. The high quality diamond films without amorphous carbon and non-diamond elements were deposited at the CH₄ flow rate ratio of 1.5%, and the main phase of the diamond films shows (111) plane. The poly-Si/Diamond /SiC/Si(100) structure shows that the interface is flat without voids.

      • SOD 구조 형성에 따른 다이아몬드 박막 형성

        CO와 H₂의 탄소원을 사용한 마이크로파 플라즈마 화학기상중착 방법으로 SOD 구조에 적용될 양질의 다이아몬드 박막을 형성하였고, SOD구조를 형성하기 위해 diamond /Si(100) 구조위에 poly-Si박막을 저압화학기상 증착법으로 제작하였다. CO/H₂탄소원의 유량비 증가에 따라 다이아몬드의 결정은 octahedron구조에서 cubo-octahedron구조로 바뀌었으며, 결정면은{111}과 {100}으로 혼합되어 형성되었다. 비정질 carbon과 non-diamond성분이 없는 양질의 다이아몬드 박막은 CO/H₂의 유량비가 0.18일때 형성되었으며, 주 결정상은 {111}면이었다. diamond/Si(100)계면은 void가 없는 평활한 계면을 이루었으며, 다이아몬드 박막의 유전상수, 누설전류와 비저항은 각각 5.3 1X10-9A/㎠ 그리고 9X107Ωcm이었다.       • 국균증의 임상적 고찰

        The Aspergilli are among the most common and ubiquitous saprophytic fungi in the environment. Aspergillosis is divided into several cartegories, among which the invasive aspergillsois (IA) causes significant morbidity and mortality in immunocompromized host especially from pulmonary infection. The clinical aspect off 40 cases of aspergillsois were studied. who were admitted Severance Hospital between January, 1985 and June, 1990. The following results were observed. 1) Among these 40 cases, 1 was diagnosed as allergic aspergillsois, 25 as aspergilloma (pulmonary 22, paranasal sinus 3), 11 as IA (pulmonary 5, brain 3, sinus with contiguous invasion 3) and 3 as pleural aspergillsois. 2) Among 22 cases of pulmonary aspergilloma, the most frequently associated underlying diseases were pulmonary tuberculosis in 17 and others were COPD in 3, bronchiectasis in 2 and bronchial asthma in 1. Among 5 cases of invasive pulmonary aspergillsois (IPA), acute lymphocytic leukemia was the underlying disease in 3, acute myelogenous leukemia in 1 and myelodysplastic syndrome in 1. 3) The specific diagnosis of aspergilloma was made by surgical biopsy in 15, transbronchial lung biopsy in 4 and compatible finding of chest X-ray with positive antibody against Aspergillus antigen in 6. Among 3 cases of pleural aspergillsois, 2 were diagnosed by pleural biopsy and 1 by culture of pleural fluid. 4) In cases of IA, the specific diagnosis was made by histopathologic findings in 9. Among 5 cases of IPA, 2 were diagnosed by needle aspiration biopsy, 2 by clinical diagnostic criteria and 1 by open lung biopsy. 5) The severe granulocytopenia (<500/㎣) before pulmonary infiltrates was noted in all cases of IPA. 6) All the 22 cases of pulmonary aspergilloma were improved with surgical resection in 13 and 9 with conservative treatment. In contrast, 3 of 5 IPA were dead inspite of amphotericin B treatment and 2 were recovered with improvement of underlying disease or granulocytopenia. Six cases of invasive sinus or brain aspergillosis were improved with surgical removal and amphotericin B treatment, and 2 pleural aspergillosis with surgical drainage. With the above results, several types of aspergillosis were confirmed and the prognosis seemed to depend on underlying disease. Because of high fatality of IPA, it is more stressed that the pro-phylactic measures, efforts of discernible diagnostic approaches and as early empirical antifungal treatment as possible might give rise to not only the therapeutic success of IPA but also the improvement in prognosis of underlying diseases.

        High Malaria Prevalence among Schoolchildren on Kome Island, Tanzania

        In order to determine the status of malaria among schoolchildren on Kome Island (Lake Victoria), near Mwanza, Tanzania, a total of 244 schoolchildren in 10 primary schools were subjected to a blood survey using the fingerprick method. The subjected schoolchildren were 123 boys and 121 girls who were 6-8 years of age. Only 1 blood smear was prepared for each child. The overall prevalence of malaria was 38.1% (93 positives), and sex difference was not remarkable. However, the positive rate was the highest in Izindabo Primary School (51.4%) followed by Isenyi Primary School (48.3%) and Bugoro Primary School (46.7%). The lowest prevalence was found in Muungano Primary School (16.7%) and Nyamiswi Primary School (16.7%). These differences were highly correlated with the location of the school on the Island; those located in the peripheral area revealed higher prevalences while those located in the central area showed lower prevalences. Plasmodium falciparum was the predominant species (38.1%; 93/244), with a small proportion of them mixed-infected with Plasmodium vivax (1.6%; 4/244). The results revealed that malaria is highly prevalent among primary schoolchildren on Kome Island, Tanzania, and there is an urgent need to control malaria in this area.

        Altered PLCβ-1 expression in the gerbil hippocampal complex following spontaneous seizure

        Although the phospholipase C (PLC)β-1 isoform is associated with spontaneous seizure and distinctively expressed in the telencephalon, the distribution of PLCβ-1 expression in the epileptic gerbil hippocampus remains controversial. Therefore, we determined whether PLCβ-1 is associated with spontaneous seizure in an animal model of genetic epilepsy. In the present study, PLCβ-1 immunoreactivity was down-regulated in seizure-sensitive (SS) gerbils more than in seizure-resistant (SR) gerbils. The expression of PLCβ-1 within calretinin (CR)-positive neurons was rarely detected within the dentate hilar region of SS gerbils. PLCβ-1 immunoreactivity in the hippocampus was significantly elevated as compared to that in pre-seizure SS gerbil 3 h post-ictal. These findings suggest that alterations in PLCβ-1 immunoreactivity in the SS gerbil hippocampus may be closely related to the epileptic state of the gerbil brain and transiently elevated PLCβ-1 protein levels following seizure episodes. Such alterations may be compensatory responses in the SS gerbil hippocampus. [BMB reports 2011; 44(9) : 566-571]

        Barrier protection via Toll-like receptor 2 signaling in porcine intestinal epithelial cells damaged by deoxynivalnol

        <P>Intestinal barrier is the first line of defense inside the body and comprises intercellular tight junction (TJ) proteins that regulate paracellular permeability. Deoxynivalenol (DON), a fungal metabolite often found in the contaminated food of domestic animals, is known to impair intestinal barrier function and may be involved in intestinal inflammation. Unlike in humans and mice, the importance of Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 expressed in porcine intestinal epithelial cells is largely unclear. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether TLR2 stimulation enhances intestinal barrier function and protects against DON exposure. We found that the cells treated with TLR2 ligands decreased the epithelial barrier permeability and enhanced TJ protein expression in intestinal porcine epithelial cells (IPEC-J2). In addition, pretreatment with TLR2 ligand, including Pam3CSK4 (PCSK) and lipoteichoic acid from <I>Bacillus subtilis</I>, prevented DON-induced barrier dysfunction by increasing the expression of TJ proteins via the PI3K-Akt-dependent pathway. It is likely that the DON-disrupted intestinal barrier caused biological changes of immune cells in the lamina propria. Thus, we conducted co-culture of differentiated IPEC-J2 cells in the upper well together with peripheral blood mononuclear cells in the bottom well and found that apical TLR2 stimulation of IPEC-J2 cells could alleviate the reduction in cell survival and proliferation of immune cells.
