This article reports the orthodontic treatment of a patient with skeletal mandibular retrusion and an anterior open bite due to temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) using miniscrew anchorage. A 46-year-old woman had a Class II malocclusion with a retropositioned mandible. Her overjet and overbite were 7.0 mm and -1.6 mm, respectively. She had limited mouth opening, TMJ sounds, and pain. Condylar resorption was observed in both TMJs. Her TMJ pain was reduced by splint therapy, and then orthodontic treatment was initiated. Titanium miniscrews were placed at the posterior maxilla to intrude the molars. After 2 years and 7 months of orthodontic treatment, an acceptable occlusion was achieved without any recurrence of TMJ symptoms. The retropositioned mandible was considerably improved, and the lips showed less tension upon lip closure. The maxillary molars were intruded by 1.5 mm, and the mandible was subsequently rotated counterclockwise. Magnetic resonance imaging of both condyles after treatment showed avascular necrosis-like structures. During a 2-year retention period, an acceptable occlusion was maintained without recurrence of the open bite. In conclusion, correction of open bite and clockwise-rotated mandible through molar intrusion using titanium miniscrews is effective for the management of TMJ-OA with jaw deformity.

Image Enhancement Improving Visibility of Undiscriminatable Colors for Dichromacy

The color information is not be always perceived uniformly by all the people. Some people with color vision deficiency, such as dichromacy, feel difficulty to recognize and to distinguish certain color combinations. In this paper, an image enhancement method, which realizes barrier-free color vision for people with dichromacy while preserving the color information as much as possible for common viewers, is proposed.
Control Strategies of Active Power Line Conditioners in Single-Phase Circuits

This paper deals with two control strategies for the active power line conditioners in single-phase circuits. The first one is a constant dc capacitor voltage control based strategy, which is commonly used in the active power line conditioners. Any detection blocks of the fundamental active, reactive, and harmonic components are not necessary in this method. Thus we offer the simplest way to compensate the fundamental reactive and harmonic currents on the source-side. The other is a reactive power control based strategy, which is with the correlation and cross-correlation coefficients between the feeder voltage and load current. Controlling the detected fundamental reactive component with the cross-correlation coefficient on the source-side reduces the capacity of the PWM inverter, which performs the active power line conditioners. The basic principles of the proposed control strategies are discussed in detail, and then applied to the single-phase active power line conditioners in single-phase based distribution systems. These sigle-phase distributin systems are used in the single-phase three-wire systems and electrified railways. The validity and excellent practicability of the proposed control strategies are confirmed by experimental results.
An Edge Preserving Filter-based Selective Unsharp Masking for Noisy Images

In this paper, a new image sharpening method is proposed. The proposed method is a kind of selective unsharp masking, and it has an advantage on enhancement of the noisy images. And, the optimum values of parameters of the proposed method can be determined by the amplitude of an additive noise. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated through the comparison with the conventional unsharp masking and cubic unsharp masking.
Hybridization of Look-Up Table- and Gaussian Filter-Based Inverse Halftoning Methods

Inverse halftoning is a technique to reproduce a grayscale image from a binary one. As one of sophisticated inverse halftoning methods which can yield high quality grayscale image, there is a look-up table- (LUT) based method. In this paper, a new inverse halftoning method based on both the LUT-based inverse halftoning method and a Gaussian filter is proposed. In the proposed method, the output grayscale image is reproduced by blending the output of the LUT-based inverse halftoning and that of the Gaussian filtering appropriately in accordance with local statistics of the image. The effectiveness and the validity of the proposed method are verified through the experiments.
