Sequences in Financial Liberalization in the Emerging-Market Economies: Growth, Volatility or Both?

        ( Dilip K. Das ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 (구 세종대학교 국제경제연구소) 2004 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.19 No.4

The objective of this paper is to in-depth study the financial liberalization process in the various segments of the emerging-market economies and observe whether the resulting assertion of fast-clip real GDP growth holds. The author examines financial and macroeconomic turbulence in the emerging market economies during the 1990s and early 2000s, which gave a new perspective to the financial liberalization process. It was believed that capital account liberalization led to volatility in the capital market as well as macroeconomic volatility, which in turn led to a support for the strategy of restrictive global capital flows. The unrestricted trans-border capital flows were blamed for disorderly, if on occasion totally erratic, capital market behavior, both domestically and globally. After taking a long-term perspective on financial repression and financial liberalization, the author focuses on the liberalization-growth nexus. Capital account liberalization and whether it leads to growth and/or volatility or both are the issues are the next point of analyses. Relatively recent phenomenon of liberalization in equity markets, its pace and intensity, has also been delved into. Whether the recent spate of emerging-market crises bore a relationship with the financial liberalization is the other focus of this paper.

CLOBALIZATION AND THE ANTI-GLOBALIZATION LOBBY : A DEFICIT OF THOUGHTFULNESS AND CLAIRVOYANCE

Das, Dilip K. 연세대학교 동서문제연구원 2004 Global economic review Vol.33 No.4

As the current wave of globalization strengthened, so did the fury of the anti-globalization lobby against it. The author believes that the members of this lobby failed to take a thoughtful and balanced perspective of the on-going integration of the global economy. Indubitably, globalization has its winners and losers. The author establishes that if the members of this group take a good look at the two sides of the coin in an objective and unprejudiced manner, they are sure to see the folly of their ways. Evidence is available to show that on balance, globalization has had enormous beneficial effect and has improved the plight of the poor in the global economy.

Idiosyncratic Features of the Contemporary Regional Economic Architecture in Asia

Dilip K. Das 대외경제정책연구원 2012 East Asian Economic Review Vol.16 No.2

The objective of this article is to examine the characteristic features of contemporary policy-led regionalism in Asia. It identifies the positive and negative features associated with the free trade agreements that have proliferated in Asia during the first decade of the 21st century. There has been a marked transformation in Asia’s regional architecture in a short span of a decade-and-a-half. The mode and conduct of multilateral trade has been significantly transformed during recent years and Asia could not possibly remain immune to this transformation. The importance of regionalism in multilateral trade has increased steadily. In addition, the tradeinvestment-services nexus has developed and grown increasingly important. As business firms now manufacture parts of their products across the border, bilateral trade agreements (BTAs), regional trade agreements (RTAs) and free trade agreements (FTAs) of the contemporary period need to take into account the new kind of trade barriers that have been created due to the changing mode of trade. The contemporary regional agreements need to be designed to facilitate the new modes of conducting business and trade. It was understood rather late in Asia that the ‘WTO-Plus’ FTAs are more functional and result-oriented than their predecessors.

The Invisible Hand versus the Visible Hand: The Korean Case

Dilip K. Das 서울대학교 경제연구소 1992 Seoul journal of economics Vol.5 No.2

The long-held neoclassical belief was that in free-market forces and laissez-faire lay the economic nirvana. The structuralists challenged it and deified the statist approach. Competitive markets and statism are two imperfect alternatives. The wisdom lies in pragmatically choosing between different combinations of the market and non-market approaches. This is what Korea did with sufficient ingenuity. The integration between the state geared to development goalstal goals and the profit maximizing private sector worked rather well in Korea. The state intervention was non-ideological and based on the economic efficiency criteria. It was seen that interventionist measures was not allowed to stifle. However, there were several striking differences in the manner in which the state intervened in Korea and that in other developing countries. This article delves into the question of what made state intervention so successful in Korea. The Korean experience has several lessons for the LDCs that have not turned in a stellar growth performance.

Globalization and the Anti-Globalization Lobby: A Deficit of Thoughtfulness and Clairvoyance

Dilip K. Das 연세대학교 동서문제연구원 2005 Global economic review Vol.34 No.1

As the current wave of globalization strengthened, so did the fury of the anti–globalization lobby against it. The author believes that the members of this lobby failed take a thoughtful and balanced perspective of the on-going integration of the global economy. Indubitably globalization has its winners and losers. In this well-conceived article author establishes that if the members of this group take a good look at the two sides of the coin in an objective and unprejudiced manner, they are sure to see the folly of their ways. A great deal of evidence is available to show that on balance, globalization has had enormous beneficial effect and has improved the plight of the poor in the global economy.

China’s Contribution to Recent Convergence and Integration among the Asian Economies

Dilip K. Das 대외경제정책연구원 2013 East Asian Economic Review Vol.17 No.1

The objective of this article is to explore the economic relationship between China and the surrounding dynamic Asian economies. It delves into China’s influence over the Asian economies and whether this relationship is a market-led or de facto symbiosis. The three principal channels of regional integration analyzed in this article are trade, FDI and vertically integrated production networks. They are essentially based on the activities of the private-sector in these economies. China methodically expanded and deepened its economic ties with the regional neighbors. At the present juncture, China’s integration with the surrounding Asia is deep. Another issue that this article explores is the so-called China “threat” or “fear” in Asia. It implies that China is crowding out exports of the other Asian economies in the world market place. Also, as China has become the most attractive FDI destination among the developing countries, it is apprehended that China is receiving FDI at the expense of the Asian economies. These concerns were examined by several empirical studies, and the inference is that they are exaggerated. This article concludes that the private-sector business activities in China and other rapidly growing Asian economies were (and are) instrumental in bringing together the production structures and real economies. The result is both convergence and integration among the dynamic Asian economies. Over the years China and its Asian neighbors has developed a close and symbiotic economic relationship and a de facto regional integration.

      • Thermal plasma-inspired synthesis of ZnO1−XMnx dilute magnetic semiconductors for enhanced visible light photocatalysis

Das, Arya,Sahoo, Rakesh K.,Kumar Mishra, Dilip,Singh, Saroj K.,Mane, Rajaram S.,Kim, Kwang Ho Elsevier 2019 APPLIED SURFACE SCIENCE - Vol.467 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We report a simple, time-consuming and scalable synthesis of ZnO1−xMnx nanocrystals (Mn-ZnO NCs) using a thermal plasma chemical method. The diffusion of the Mn2+ into the host ZnO lattice causes pronounced change in the structure, morphology, spectroscopy and magnetic properties of ZnO. The Mn-doping in ZnO lattice introduces defects by changing the lattice constant values, vibration mode shift at a particular position, decrease in the band gap energy from 3.23 to 3.08 eV, with more than 90% photoluminescence quenching proficiency which has not only makes it as the efficient photocatalyst in methylene blue dye degradation but also confirms change in the shape and the magnitude of the electron spin resonance spectra, suggesting revelation of the dilute magnetic semiconducting properties in ZnO. The onset of the sharp resonance peak at 0.6% Mn-doping level followed a sharp fall in the intensity when Mn-concentration ≥0.8% has thoroughly been investigated and explored. Moreover, a tunable optical absorption change of Mn-ZnO NCs at various Mn-contents corroborats a proficient visible light photocatalytic performance which has been optimized, exquisitely, on controlling the shape and Mn-doping concentration level. Our results offer a basic understanding of synergetic effect taking place in enhancing the photocatalytic performance, which otherwise could cause by a defect-mediated ferromagnetic coupling and optimal Mn-doping concentration.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A time-consuming and scalable thermal plasma synthesis of ZnO1−xMnx nanocrystals. </LI> <LI> Effect of Mn-doping on the bandgap of ZnO through structural and optical studies. </LI> <LI> Synergistic effect of ferromagnetic coupling and optimal Mn-dopants on photocatalysis. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
