Neoplasms of the pineal gland are collectively rare, comprising from 0.4 to 1% of all tntracranial tumors, among them the number of pinealoblastoma is extremely small. A case of pinealoblastoma is reported. A 25-year old female with headache, Parinaud's syndrome and voiding disturbance of 1 month's duration is presented. Neurological findings were the vilateral papilledemas and the bilateral pareses of upward gaze. Vertebral angiography, Conray ventriculography and C-T brain scan revealed a posterior 3rd ventricle tumor. Through the right occipital approach a soft pinkish-grey mass on the pineal region was detected, and biopsy was kone. At the same time ventriculoperitoneal shunt was applied. The pathological finding of the specimen was pinealoblastoma. The patient underwent the radiation therapy with good result.

<P>Episodic ataxia type 2 (EA2) is characterized by recurrent attacks of vertigo and ataxia lasting hours triggered by emotional stress or exercise. Although interictal horizontal gaze-evoked nystagmus and rebound nystagmus are commonly observed in patients with EA2, the nystagmus has been rarely reported during the vertigo attack. To better describe exercise-induced nystagmus in EA2, four affected members from three generations of a Korean family with EA2 received full neurological and neuro-otological evaluations. Vertigo was provoked in the proband with running for 10?min to record eye movements during the vertigo attack. We performed a polymerase chain reaction-based direct sequence analysis of all coding regions of CACNA1A in all participants. The four affected members had a history of exertional vertigo, imbalance, childhood epilepsy, headache, and paresthesia. The provocation induced severe vertigo and imbalance lasting several hours, and oculography documented pure downbeat nystagmus during the attack. Genetic analyses identified a nonsense mutation in exon 23 which has been registered in dbSNP as a pathogenic allele (c.3832C>T, p.R1278X) in all the affected members. Ictal downbeat nystagmus in the studied family indicates cerebellar dysfunction during the vertigo attack in EA2. In patients with episodic vertigo and ataxia, the observation of exercise-induced nystagmus would provide a clue for EA2.</P>

Craspedoxantha genus has been distributed in worldwide as 7 species in Afrotropical and 2 species in Oriental Regions. It is generally known that C. marginalis is preferred Asteraceae including Vernonia spp. for host plant. However, C. marginalis was first found in cut-flower of Phaenocoma prolifera, which was imported from South Africa, under the plant quarantine inspection in Korea. Therefore, we first report that P. prolifera as a new host plant for C. marginalis and provide information of the morphological characteristics and DNA barcoding sequences on male and female for identification.

The spotted-wing drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae), was originally observed in a few Asian countries, but is now found even in North America and Europe. Genetic information on geographic variation and relationship may broaden our understanding of origin and migration. As a first step, in this study, a portion of mitochondrial COI gene was sequenced to understand genetic relationship and diversity in Korea. Sequencing of 104 individuals provided 57 haplotypes, with the maximum sequence divergence of 1.5%, suggesting high haplotype diversity and moderate sequence divergence. Comparison to GenBankregistered D. suzukii haplotypes (possibly from Spain, Portugal, USA) has shown 100% sequence identity to most of the haplotypes found in this study, but two USA sequences were found to be independent haplotypes, with the sequence divergence ranging from 0.5% ~ 1.4% from our samples in the 553-bp comparison. Phylogenetically, no separable group was found, but, population genetically, the only Chinese population, Sandong, was significantly differentiated (p < 0.05) from all Korean populations, without sharing any haplotype. Among 28 pairwise comparisons of Korean populations only two comparisons showed a significant genetic differentiation, indicating that no population in Korea is completely isolated. Geographically, one haplotype (SWDBA06) was relatively widespread (five among nine localities) and a few haplotypes were found in more than one locality, but most haplotypes were restricted in a locality as a single individual. Overall, high rate of per generation female migration (Nm = 0.75 ~ infinite) and low level of geographic separation (FST=0~0.40) among localities were characteristic. Current data is limited mainly to Korean localities, thus, an expanded study may provide further scrutinized analysis for the fly.

The spotted-wing drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is an economically damaging pest that feeds on most thin-skinned fruits. In this study, we sequenced portions of the mitochondrial (mt) COI and ND4 genes from a total of 195 individuals collected mainly from Korea. A total of 139 haplotypes were obtained from the concatenated COI and ND4 sequences. A dataset combining GenBank sequences with our own data identified a total of 94 worldwide COI haplotypes with a maximum sequence divergence of 5.433% (32 bp). A rough estimate of genetic diversity in each country showed higher diversity in ancestral distributional ranges, but the invasion over Asian countries seems to have been substantial because haplotype diversity was only 2.35-3.97-fold lower in the USA, Canada, and Italy than that in the populations ancestral ranges.

식식성 파리류는 농업경제학적으로 매우 중요한 분류군으로 인식되어 분류, 예찰 및 방제, 생태, 생리 등 다양한 분야에서 활발한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 식식성 파리류의 습성은 leaf-miners, stem-borers, root tunnellers, fruit borers, cambium miners, seed borers, inhabitants of flowerheads 등이 대표적으로 알려져 있으며, 식물체의 다양한 부위를 공격한다. 대부분의 식식성 파리류는 한 종의 식물을 공격하는 것으로 알려져 있으나, 일부는 2종 이상의 식물체와 관련이 있다. 이들은 생태학적 습성으로 인해 비교적 크기가 작고 변이의 폭이 넓어, 분류동정이 어려운 특징이 있다. 따라서, 최근 통합분류학적 접근을 통한 계통학적 연구, 예찰 및 방제를 위한 유인물질의 개발, 잡초 방제를 위한 생태학적 연구 등이 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구를 통하여 분류군별 생물학적 특징과 세계적인 연구동향을 정리하여 소개하며, 추가적으로 연구가 필요한 분야에 대해 제안하고자 한다.

A new species of Adoxophyes unique from other closely resembling species was discovered based on molecular characters. Larvae of this species were collected from sweet cherry (Prunus avium) imported from China and intercepted under plant quarantine inspection at Korean sea and airport in 2008. They were reared to adult in the laboratory for accurate identification. We also collected two specimens from China for this study. In addition, we conducted a comparative study of three related Korean species (A. orana, A. honmai, and A. paraorana (= orana-like)) to confirm the identity of new species. We compared DNA barcoding sequences (~658 bp) of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene from 13 specimens of four Adoxophyes species. We also compared variable internal transcribed space region 1 (ITS 1) nuclear rDNA sequence for further identification. As a result of this study, we confirmed the identity of Adoxophyes a new species. We also provided pairwise p-distances among the species and their neighbor-joining tree.
A Taxonomic Study of the Genus Platycheirus Lepeletier et Serville(Diptera: Syrphidae) in Korea

Korean species of the genus Platycheirus is taxonomically reviewed. As a result, we have recognized seven species, among which only one was previously known from Korea; P. ambiguus (Fallen), P. clypeatus (Meigen), P. immaculatus $\hat{O}hara$, P. pennipes Ohara, P. scutatus (Meigen), P. urakawensis (Matsumura), and Platycheirus sp. near albimanus (Fabricius). A key to the species, descriptions and illustrations of the Korean Platycheirus are provided except for P. ambiguus, which was not available for this study.
