      • Retinoic acid enhances lactoferrin-induced IgA responses by increasing betaglycan expression

        <P>Lactoferrin (LF) and retinoic acid (RA) are enriched in colostrum, milk, and mucosal tissues. We recently showed that LF-induced IgA class switching through binding to betaglycan (transforming growth factor-beta receptor III, T beta RIII) and activation of canonical TGF-beta signaling. We investigated the combined effect of LF and RA on the overall IgA response. An increase in IgA production by LF was further augmented by RA. This combination effect was also evident in Ig germ-line alpha (GL alpha) transcription and GLa promoter activity, indicating that LF in cooperation with RA increased IgA isotype switching. We subsequently found that RA enhanced T beta RIII expression and that this increase contributed to LF-stimulated IgA production. In addition to the IgA response, LF and RA in combination also enhanced the expression of the gut-homing molecules C-C chemokine receptor 9 (CCR9) and alpha 4 beta 7 on B cells. Finally, peroral administration of LF and RA enhanced the frequency of CCR9(+)IgA(+) plasma cells in the lamina propria. Taken together, these results suggest that LF in cooperation with RA can contribute to the establishment of gut IgA responses.</P>

        Incidence rate of Aneurysmal SAH in Gwangju City and Jeollanamdo Province in 2007

        Objective : The incidence of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) worldwide varies considerably. In spite of many reports about the incidence of SAH, there has been no report about the incidence of SAH on the basis of the Korean population. The purpose of this hospital-based study was to assess the actual incidence rates of aneurysmal SAH in Gwangju city and Jeollanamdo province. Methods : All cases of SAH confirmed by computerized tomography (CT) between January 2007 and December 2007 were selected for analysis. For the data collection, three major training hospital and ten general hospitals working the CT in Gwangju city and four major general hospitals in Jeollanamdo province participate in this study. Results : According to the official census of Korea, the population was 1,413,444 in Gwangju city and 1.929,836 in Jeollanamdo province in 2007. There were 163 patients in Gwangju city and 266 patients in Jeollanamdo province confirmed SAH by CT in 2007. The crude and the age- and sex-adjusted annual incidence rates per 100,000 population for all ages in Gwangju city were 11.5 and 12.4 for aneurysmal SAH and in Jeollanamdo province were 13.8 and 10.8. The incidence was higher in women and increased with age. The gender distribution varied with age. At young ages. the incidence was higher in men while after the age of 40 years, the incidence was higher in women. Conclusion : In the present study, the age- and sex-adjusted annual incidence rates is 11.8 in Gwangju city and Jeollanamdo province. The incidence was higher in women and increased with age.

        We report a case of a 57-year-old man with spinal leptomeningeal metastasis from cerebral glioblastoma that presented with radicular pain. Magnetic resonance image of lumbar spine demonstrated an intradural mass at the cauda equine. The tumor was removed subtotally with L2-4 hemipatrtial laminectomy and histologic diagnosis was glioblastoma. External beam radiotherapy(30GY) was followed, but the clinical response was poor.

        초등학교 5학년 학생을 위한 다문화교육 프로그램 실행 연구

        본 연구는 초등학교 5학년 학생을 위한 다문화교육 프로그램을 개발하고 실행함으로써 학생들의 변화를 관찰하고 초등 고학년 다문화교육 프로그램을 구안하며, 다문화교육의 개선 방향을 제시하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 효과적인 다문화교육을 위해 본 연구에서는 인권교육 프로그램, 인권감수성 프로그램, 반편견·반차별교육 프로그램의 총 3개 프로그램을 개발하였으며, 개발된 프로그램은 대전시 A 초등학교 5학년 1개 학급 26명에게 1년에 걸쳐 적용되었다. 그 결과 학생들은 인권에 대한 개념을 갖게 되었고 자신이 가진 편견과 차별적 행동을 인식할 수 있게 되었으며 자신이 가진 편견과 차별적 행동을 감소시키려고 노력했다. 본 연구를 통해서 인권교육이 다문화교육의 효과적인 방법으로 활용될 수 있으며, 다문화교육이 초등 저학년 때부터 이루어져야 한다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. This study starts from the idea that getting students to acquire multicultural awareness is more important than providing adjustment education to multicultural students for the healthy multicultural society in Korea. The aim of this study is to observe educational changes of students, to present one method of multicultural education for the upper grades, and to suggest better ways of multicultural education. Nowadays, Korea rapidly becomes multicultural society. Also, students who are differ from race, gender, religion, etc. live together in school. In these situations, multicultural education is required to get along with them. However, lacks of textbook, material and program for multicultural education make teachers be indifferent to practice this education. So, this program was developed and applied to 5th graders and the goal of this program is that students can adapt the changing society and learn how to respect others from different culture and race groups. In this study, multicultural education was practiced in two ways: Human rights and Anti-bias. Human rights education was practiced in first semester to have students get a concept and awareness of human rights. It was followed by the anti-bias education, which was carried out in second semester to have students be aware of diversity, bias and discrimination. To educate the students in the human rights and the anti-bias effectively, three programs were developed and twenty-six students at an elementary school in Daejeon participated in this study for 1 year. The result of the study is as follows. After the students had participated in this program, they got a concept of human rights and they could recognize their own bias and discriminate behaviors. Also they tried hard to decrease them. Based on the results of this study, the following suggestions are made. First, human rights education plays a key role in multicultural education. Second, multicultural education should be started from the lower grades in elementary school. Third, the text book for multicultural education is needed for systematic and long term education.

        북한의 문화유산 보호 관련 법제의 변천과 내용분석

        북한의 문화유산 보호관리정책은 2000년대 후반부터 급격한 변화를 보이고 있다. 2009년 수정보충된 '문화유물보호법'과 이 법을 기초하여 2012년에 제정된 '문화유산보호법'은 북한의 문화유산에 대한 관심을 반영한다고 볼 수 있다. 북한의 문화유산 보호와 관련된 법제는 보다 체계적이고 세분화되며 전문성과 효율성을 높이는 방향으로 변화하고 있다. 또한 '비물질문화유산'(남한의 '무형문화재'와 유사한 개념)의 법제를 통한 관리는 '문화유산의 개념'부터 '발굴과 수집', '평가와 등록'에 이르기까지 많은 변화를 가져왔으며 남한과 북한의 '문화유산' 관리에 있어 가장 큰 차이를 해소하는 역할을 하였다. 최근 이런 변화는 2013년 '유네스코 세계유산(UNESCO World Heritage)'으로 '개성역 사유적지구(Historic Monuments and Sites in Kaesong)'가 등재되기에 앞서 제시된 유네스코의 권고사항과 현재 문화유산 관리에 있어서 처해 있는 북한의 현실이 반영된 결과로 볼 수 있다. 하지만 문화유산 관리에 있어 가치판단이 개입되고 있으며, 따라서 북한의 문화유산에 대한 '원상대로 보존'은 남한의 '원형유지'와 다르다는 것을 의미한다. 북한의 문화유산을 직접 접촉하여 향유하고 보존하는 것은 현실적으로 요원하기 때문에 이와 관련된 법제나 연구자료 등과 같은 다양한 자료들을 통한 체계적인 연구는 문화유산을 보존하고 전승하는데 기여할 수 있을 것이다. Rapid changes started to happen to the policies to protect and manage cultural heritage in North Korea in the second half of the 2000s. North Korea's interest in its cultural heritage was reflected in ≪The Law on Protection of Cultural Property≫ revised and complemented in 2009 and ≪The Law on the Protection of Cultural Heritage≫ enacted in 2012 based on it. The North Korean laws related to the protection of cultural heritage are changing in a direction of increasing systemicity, segmentation, professionalism, and efficiency. The management of 'Immaterial Cultural Heritage'(similar concept of Intangible cultural heritage in South Korea) through those laws has brought about many changes from the 'concept of cultural heritage' to 'excavation and collection' and 'evaluation and registration' and resolved the biggest difference in the management of "cultural heritage" between North and South Korea. Those recent changes are the results of reflecting the recommendations by UNESCO before the registration of 'Historic Monuments and Sites in Kaesong' as 'UNESCO World Heritage' in 2013 and the reality of current cultural heritage management in North Korea. However, value judgments are included in the management of cultural heritage, which means that there are differences between 'to their preservation in original state' in North Korea and 'to preserve them in their original state' in South Korea. It is an unrealistic wish to make first-hand contact with, enjoy, and preserve the cultural heritage of North Korea in South Korea, whose systematic researches based on various materials including the concerned laws and research findings will be able to make a contribution to the preservation and transmission of cultural heritage of North Korea.

        Lactoferrin Combined with Retinoic Acid Stimulates B1 Cells to Express IgA Isotype and Gut-homing Molecules

        It is well established that TGF-${\beta}1$ and retinoic acid (RA) cause IgA isotype switching in mice. We recently found that lactoferrin (LF) also has an activity of IgA isotype switching in spleen B cells. The present study explored the effect of LF on the Ig production by mouse peritoneal B cells. LF, like TGF-${\beta}1$, substantially increased IgA production in peritoneal B1 cells but little in peritoneal B2 cells. In contrast, LF increased IgG2b production in peritoneal B2 cells much more strongly than in peritoneal B1 cells. LF in combination with RA further enhanced the IgA production and, interestingly, this enhancement was restricted to IgA isotype and B1 cells. Similarly, the combination of the two molecules also led to expression of gut homing molecules ${\alpha}4{\beta}7$ and CCR9 on peritoneal B1 cells, but not on peritoneal B2 cells. Thus, these results indicate that LF and RA can contribute to gut IgA response through stimulating IgA isotype switching and expression of gut-homing molecules in peritoneal B1 cells.

        Electrical Characteristics of Tunneling Field-effect Transistors using Vertical Tunneling Operation Based on AlGaSb/InGaAs

        This paper presents the electrical performances of novel AlGaSb/InGaAs heterojunctionbased vertical-tunneling field-effect transistor (VTFET). The device performance was investigated in views of the on-state current (Ion), drain-induced barrier thinning (DIBT), and subthreshold swing (SS) as the gate length (LG) was scaled down. The proposed TFET with a LG of 5 nm operated with an Ion of 1.3 mA/μm, a DIBT of 40 mV/V, and an SS of 23 mV/dec at a drain voltage (VDS) of 0.23 V. The proposed TFET provided approximately 25 times lower DIBT and 12 times smaller SS compared with the conventional LG of 5 nm TFET. The AlGaSb/InGaAs VTFET showed extremely high scalability and strong immunity against short-channel effects.
