The current study sought to investigate the adjustment process of Seoul National University (SNU) students who had experienced academic failure by focusing on the factors that affect such process. The research question of the study can be summarized as “what does a SNU student who had experienced academic failure experience and how does he or she adjust?”
For this, 15 SNU students who had been under academic probation at least once during the first and second year in college but have been off the academic probation afterwards were individually interviewed. All participants have attended at least 5 college semesters. Interview results were analyzed using the grounded theory method (Strauss & Corbin, 1990).
The main findings can be summarized as follows. Upon categorization through the open coding process, a total of 85 concepts, 40 subcategories and 14 categories were extracted. Category analysis using coding paradigm revealed that the causal conditions in the adjustment process of participants who had experienced academic failures were ‘transition to an ordinary life’ and ‘difficulties of studying for excellence.’ Core phenomena were ‘experience of self discrepancy’ and ‘not living up to the name of a SNU student.’ Contextual conditions that affected these core phenomena were ‘feeling responsible to live up to expectations of a SNU student,’ ‘privileges of having the SNU label,’ and ‘environment where one needs to be responsible for oneself.’ Intervening conditions that either facilitate or repress the action/interaction strategies regarding core phenomena were ‘receiving help once academic problems were known,’ ‘occurrence of unexpected problems in reality,’ ‘searching for the direction to follow.’ Action/interaction strategies appeared to be ‘confronting the reality and transforming thoughts’ and ‘focusing on one’s studies.’ As a result, they reported ‘feeling responsible for one’s studies’ and ‘feeling the need to find a career that fit the status of a SNU student.’
The adjustment process of SNU students who had experienced academic failure consisted of ‘conflict stage,’ ‘reflection stage,’ ‘action stage,’ and ‘integration stage.’
The ‘conflict stage’ refers to the period when students experienced academic difficulties due to their previously formed perceptions regarding self and studies. During this stage, they found themselves different from their past selves who had been smart and diligent. Because they had met expectations for high-level performance and achievement up until college entrance, they tended to refuse to accept their mediocre academic results in college. Instead, they chose to give up midway in consideration of retaking the courses.
The ‘reflection stage’ occurred after the students were put under academic probation. Once their academic failure was made official through academic probation, the students began to reflect on their school life. Gradually, they came to accept that their abilities are considered ordinary at SNU. They redefined what college studies mean to them and set realistic academic goals.
The ‘action stage’ occurred when students confronted their reality and began to behave differently with transformed thoughts about themselves and studies. Participants tended to avoid extreme competitions with other students and chose classes that fit their interest and aptitude. Moving away from the rote memorization approach of studying, they began to study strategically by proactively searching for information and developing skills to discern important lecture materials. They now focused on their studies by fulfilling basic academic requirements such as attendance, homework submission, and longer study hours.
The ‘integration stage’ refers to the gradual stabilization of their newly gained perspective on their studies. At the same time, the participants started to seriously think about their career paths after experiencing academic failure which led them to prepare for their post-college life. In other words, the result of academic adjustment entails both feeling responsible for their studies and preparing for post graduation life. In particular, the participants selected and prepared for career directions that seemed fitting for SNU students.
The core criterion in the adjustment process of SNU students who had experienced academic failure appeared to be ‘performing academic tasks by reducing the discrepancies through changed perceptions regarding self and studies.’ Upon analysis of relevance among criteria around this core criterion, four types emerged: ‘fast transition type,’ ‘slow transition type,’ ‘perspective conflict type,’ and ‘perspective maintenance type.’
The ‘fast transition type’ immediately awakens after experiencing academic failure due to lack of motivation. This type assesses his reality at SNU and sets new goals that fit his career direction. The ‘slow transition type’ slowly transitions by regulating his compulsive behaviors that affect his academic performance after experiencing academic failure. The ‘perspective conflict type’ gets gradually adjusted academically by going through the process of trial and error in establishing a career path. The ‘perspective maintenance type’ regards college graduation as meaningful itself since he cannot receive positive support from parents or family and is seriously conflicted in his career decisions.
The results of the study revealed that the SNU students who had experienced academic failure first underwent the ‘experience of self discrepancy’ and found themselves ‘not living up to the name of a SNU student’ because they were affected by ‘feeling responsible to live up to expectations of a SNU student,’ ‘privileges of having the SNU label,’ and ‘environment where one needs to be responsible for oneself.’ However, they came to ‘receive help once academic problems were known,’ face ‘unexpected problems in reality,’ ‘search for the direction to follow.’ Through such experiences and various action/interaction strategies, they gained ‘responsibility for their studies’ and prepared for ‘careers that fit the status of a SNU student.’
The findings of the study emphasize the importance of professional counseling for these students. The potential vulnerability of college students who had achieved great academic successes in high school is noted and directions for helping them through counseling were discussed. In sum, this study sought to comprehensively understand the conditions that affect the adjustment of SNU students who had experienced academic failure. The significance of this study lies in the fact that it highlighted the possible vulnerabilities of academically competent students and provided direction for systematically helping them through specific counseling interventions.
