The purpose of this study was to develop an assessment expertise model of science teacher. For this purpose, we analyzed realities of science teacher's student assessment and conducted teacher training. The results were reflected in the development of the model.
In this study, we used two methods for the multi-dimensional analysis to understand realities of science teacher's student assessment: a quantitative research by questionnaire and a qualitative research by observation and interview.
First, we observed 4 middle school science teachers' instruction and assessment scenes, and then interviewed them. Second, we developed a questionnaire to investigate realities of science teacher's student assessment, and surveys were carried out to 43 science teachers. In addition, we established assessment course in order to enhance the expertise of science teachers in graduate school. 10 secondary science teachers voluntarily took part in this course which lasted for three weeks. All activities in the course were recorded with video and audio, and 6 of them voluntarily took part in semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Qualitative data were transcribed for the multi-dimensional analysis and analyzed through the constant comparison method.
The results of this study using the qualitative data collected about realities of science teacher's student assessment were as follows.
First, teachers communicated with their colleagues actively in the selection and implementation process of constructed-response assessment tools. Also, their scoring rubrics which had made before tests were adjusted continuously to assess unexpected various responses of students. Second, teachers also communicated with their colleagues in the selection process of performance assessment tools. Teachers' beliefs about assessment were emanated better in the performance assessment than in the constructed-response assessment and were different between the teachers. Third, each teacher had unique culture of teacher-student community in one's instructions. However, these cultures were changed differently during the assessment, and they were recovered back to the original form in the final process of their assessment, feedback. The interactions of teacher-teacher community were more active in the assessment than in the instruction.

The results of this study using the quantitative data collected about realities of science teacher's student assessment were as follows.
First, regardless of the type of assessment, most science teachers replied that the purpose of assessment was to grasp the extent of achievement of learning objectives. In the process of assessment, they consulted with colleagues after scoring all assessment tools alone. Also they had greatest difficulty in the making and selecting the assessment tools. Second, science teachers showed differences in some respects about constructed-response assessment and performance assessment: the goal of assessment (basic scientific concepts vs. scientific inquiry skills), the focus of assessment (validity and reliability vs. difficulty and discrimination), and the independence of assessment (exclusion vs. inclusion).
The results of this study about assessment expertise component model through realities of science teacher's student assessment were as follows.
First, 4 factors (the knowledge of assessment, the knowledge of science curriculum, the knowledge of students' understanding, and the knowledge of instructional strategies) were chosen as the student assessment expertise components of science teachers. Second, science teacher's abilities on student assessment were put as the sublevel of the assessment expertise and largely divided into two kinds. One is the process-general ability that teachers communicated with their colleague. The other is the process-specific ability that is consisted of three sub-abilities (tool-developing ability, scoring ability, feedback ability). Third, the science teachers' beliefs about assessment were diverse according to the teacher's perception about student- and teacher-factor. Their beliefs were utility, validity, autonomy and fairness respectively.
Above-mentioned three factors were reflected in the assessment expertise component model. We developed and executed teacher training course based on the model developed. The results of execution were as follows.
First, the teacher training course was consisted of 3 phases (constructed-response assessment, performance assessment, and overall discussion) and 5 steps (reflection, consideration, exploration, practicing, and internalization). Second, the expertise components of the model were complemented through teacher training, and the changes in science teachers' perceptions were analyzed. 7 hierarchical steps according to their level of assessment expertise were identified, and these 7 hierarchical steps were classified into knowledge, belief, and PCK stages. Third, we proposed 'assessment expertise model of science teacher', that included developmental stages in the assessment expertise component model of science teacher.
In conclusion, this model could explain the assessment expertise in the three aspects: the components, the developmental hierarchy and the sub-ability. Therefore, we could understand science teacher's assessment expertise comprehensively by this model.
