    The primary purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics effecting the efficiency of universities and related input-output variables. To accomplish the purpose of the study, the characteristics of universities in the Republic of Korea were classified by establishment type, location, university size(classified by student number), and university type and data envelopment analysis was introduced. Input variables were number of students, number of academic staffs, number of administrative staffs, educational expenses, and research expenses and output variables were employment rate and research outcomes. The efficiency of each university and the potential improvement of input-output variables were analyzed by the characteristics of each university. Sixty one university-evaluation data of the institutional evaluation by the Korean Council for University Education were selected for the statistical analysis. The influence of the characteristic variables on the efficiency of universities was analyzed through multiple regression analysis and mean difference analysis of the potential improvement of input-output variables was introduced to analyze input-output variable statistics of universities in each characteristic. Major characteristics and input-output variables of efficient universities vs. inefficient universities were analyzed.
    The findings of this study revealed the followings: 1) characteristic variables influencing the efficiency of universities were establishment type, university type, and university size. Private universities were more efficient than national universities, education-centered universities were more efficient than comprehensive universities, and small universities(less than 5,000 students) were less efficient than mid-sized universities(5,000 students ~ 10,000 students); 2) input-output variables influencing the efficiency of universities in each characteristic were number of academic staffs, number of students, and research outcomes for establishment type, educational expenses for university type, and number of administrative staffs and number of students for university size. While characteristics of efficient universities were private, mid-sized, and education-centered, characteristics of inefficient universities were national, metropolitan area located, education-centered, and small and mid-sized; 3) input-output variables influencing the efficiency of universities were number of administrative staffs and number of students, i.e. human input variable, and employment rate, i.e. output variable in educational domain.
    Enhancing the efficiency as well as maintaining and expanding the effectiveness are necessary for improving the quality of university education. The result of data envelopment analysis, therefore, should not uniformly applied to each type of university. Data envelopment analysis is more appropriate for consulting for enhancing the efficiency than comparative evaluation.
    To analyze the efficiency of universities, the potential improvement of input-output variables were analyzed by the characteristics of each university. The method of the analysis introduced in this study is meaningful in the two aspects of the followings: 1) Variables influencing the efficiency of universities in each characteristic, which have not been presented in previous researches, could be analyzed and based on the result of the analysis, the efficiency structure of universities in the Republic of Korea could be identified in detail; and 2) the relationship between the efficiency and the characteristics of universities could be analyzed with precision.
