초등학생의 외모만족도와 행복감 관계에서 자존감의 매개효과 = Mediation Effects of Self-Esteem in the Relationship between Appearance Satisfaction and Happiness of Elementary School Students

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediation effects of self-esteem on happiness in the relationship between appearance satisfaction and happiness of elementary school students. 490 students(200 4th and 290 6th graders; 243 boys, 247 girls) were sampled from one elementary school at Chuncheon city. The results were as follows. First, high students on appearance satisfaction felt happier than the lows. Second, self-esteem mediated the effect of appearance satisfaction on happiness. Third, there were no differences between boys and girls, and 4th and 6th students in terms of the effect of appearance satisfaction on happiness, and mediation effect of self-esteem on happiness. Discussion and suggestions were as follows. First, schools need to develop the methods of elevating student`s self-esteem. Second, teachers need to understand explicit and implicit self-esteem, secure and fragile self-esteem in order to increase student`s self-esteem. Third, teachers need to understand the cost and benefit of reward, and praise as a method of raising self-esteem. Fourth, future researches have to find out other mediation variables other than self-esteem, self-efficacy, rejection sensitivity, and active coping-strategy to stress in order for alleviating the negative effects of appearance dissatisfaction. This study is subject to limitations in generalizing the results due to the limited sampling.
