In this note we introduce the concept of a lower radical for ${\Gamma}$-rings. As an application we also characterise the prime radical introduced by Barnes [1] as a lower radical. Furthermore it is shown that the prime radical can also be determined by the class of all semiprime ${\Gamma}$-rings.

This paper investigates evidence of integration and contagion between major African stock markets (ASMs) and developed stock markets during the periods of global financial crisis (GFC) and Eurozone sovereign debt crisis (ESDC). Specifically, it examined whether the co-movement between ASMs and developed stock markets during the two crisis periods is related to their level of financial integration or due to contagion. The study finds limited evidence of integration between ASMs and developed markets. However, the analysis of dynamic correlations shows that the conditional correlations are typically positive and higher during the periods of crisis, indicating substantial evidence of contagion. These findings suggest that the observed co-movements between stock markets during the crises were mainly due to contagion. The findings of this paper have several implications with respect to financial market stability, portfolio diversification and policy interventions.
Managing Developmental Dyslexia: Practices of Speech-Language Therapists in South Africa
Salomé,Geertsema,Mia Le Roux 환태평양유아교육연구학회 2020 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhoo Vol.14 No.1
Background: The American-Speech-Hearing-Association (ASHA, 2010) position statement asserts that Speech-Language Therapists (SLTs) are involved in the prevention, identification, assessment, and provision of intervention for reading and writing problems, as well as in providing other services such as counselling and information services. The 2007 Ethics and Standards Committee of the South African Speech-Language-Hearing-Association (SASHLA) proposed guidelines on the practicalities of rendering these services to the South African population. Despite these position statements and guidelines, there is limited information available on the efficacy of intervention programmes used by the SLT population. Aim: This study investigated current knowledge and practices of SLTs in the South African context, as well as their perceptions regarding developmental dyslexia (DD) management. The main aim was to determine the nature of DD management practices of SLTs in South Africa (SASLT). Method: A survey study with an embedded design was employed. More specifically, a descriptive, correlational study was conducted which included qualitative and quantitative data in the same general time period. Results: Results indicated that the majority of SASLTs do not manage DD and are not confident in their ability to manage DD. The SASLTs felt that more in-depth training would be of benefit to them. Conclusion: Training in the field of developmental dyslexia should be considered by professional bodies in the field of SLT.
The Effect of Bariatric Surgery on Diabetic Retinopathy: Good, Bad, or Both?
Dora M. Gorman,Carel W. le Roux,Neil G. Docherty 대한당뇨병학회 2016 Diabetes and Metabolism Journal Vol.40 No.5
Bariatric surgery, initially intended as a weight-loss procedure, is superior to standard lifestyle intervention and pharmacological therapy for type 2 diabetes in obese individuals. Intensive medical management of hyperglycemia is associated with improved microvascular outcomes. Whether or not the reduction in hyperglycemia observed after bariatric surgery translates to improved microvascular outcomes is yet to be determined. There is substantial heterogeneity in the data relating to the impact of bariatric surgery on diabetic retinopathy (DR), the most common microvascular complication of diabetes. This review aims to collate the recent data on retinal outcomes after bariatric surgery. This comprehensive evaluation revealed that the majority of DR cases remain stable after surgery. However, risk of progression of pre-existing DR and the development of new DR is not eliminated by surgery. Instances of regression of DR are also noted. Potential risk factors for deterioration include severity of DR at the time of surgery and the magnitude of glycated hemoglobin reduction. Concerns also exist over the detrimental effects of postprandial hypoglycemia after surgery. In vivo studies evaluating the chronology of DR development and the impact of bariatric surgery could provide clarity on the situation. For now, however, the effect of bariatric surgery on DR remains inconclusive.
Amylin as a Future Obesity Treatment
Babak Dehestani,Nicholas RS Stratford,Carel W. le Roux 대한비만학회 2021 The Korean journal of obesity Vol.30 No.4
Obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that contributes to detrimental health impacts. One-third of the population suffers from obesity, and it is important to consider obesity as a chronic disease requiring chronic treatment. Amylin is co-secreted with insulin from β pancreatic cells upon nutrient delivery to the small intestine as a satiety signal, acts upon sub-cortical homeostatic and hedonic brain regions, slows gastric emptying, and suppresses post-prandial glucagon responses to meals. Therefore, new pharmacological amylin analogues can be used as potential anti-obesity medications in individuals who are overweight or obese. In this narrative review, we analyse the efficacy, potency, and safety of amylin analogues. The synthetic amylin analogue pramlintide is an approved treatment for diabetes mellitus which promotes better glycaemic control and small but significant weight loss. AM833 (cagrilintide), an investigational novel long-acting acylated amylin analogue, acts as a non-selective amylin receptor. This calcitonin G protein-coupled receptor agonist can serve as an attractive novel treatment for obesity, resulting in reduction of food intake and significant weight loss in a dose-dependent manner.
