      • Mn-doped Zn/Al layered double hydroxides as photocatalysts for the 4-chlorophenol photodegradation

        Morales-Mendoza, G.,Tzompantzi, F.,Garcia-Mendoza, C.,Lopez, R.,De la Luz, V.,Lee, S.W.,Kim, T.H.,Torres-Martinez, L.M.,Gomez, R. Elsevier 2015 Applied clay science Vol.118 No.-

Mn-doped Zn/Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) with Mn 0.5-3.0% mol respect to Zn content with improved photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4Clphenol) were studied. The characterization studies showed the isomorphic incorporation Mn as dopant until 1% mol. The 4Clphenol degradation was proposed as result of a combined effect of oxidation by both hydroxyl radicals (OH?) and photogenerated holes (h+). In a proposed mechanism it is suggested that Mn enhances the charge separation acting as electron e- (Mn3+; Mn4+) or hole h+ (Mn2+; Mn3+) traps according to its oxidation state. Exhaustive characterization through EDS, XRD, UV-vis-DRS, TEM-Dark field STEM, fluorescence spectroscopy for OH? detection and XPS, has been done denoting the importance of the Mn content and its different oxidation states in the photophysical and photocatalytic properties of the Mn-doped Zn/Al-based layered double hydroxides.

      • Integrating History of Mathematics in Teaching Cartesian Coordinate Plane: A Lesson Study

        ( Mendoza Jay-r M ),( Alegario Joan Marie T ),( Blanco Miguel G ),( De Torres Reynold ),( Igay Roselyn B ),( Elipane Levi E ) 한국수학교육학회 2016 수학교육연구 Vol.20 No.1

The History of Mathematics (HOM) was integrated in teaching the Cartesian Coordinate Plane (CCP) to Grade Seven learners of Moonwalk National High School using Lesson Study. After the lesson was taught, there were three valuable issues emerged: (1) HOM is a Springboard and/or a Medium of Motivation in Teaching CCP; (2) The History of CCP Opened a Wider Perspective about Its Real-life Application in the Modern World (3) In-tegration of History Developed a Sense of Purpose and an Appreciation of Mathematics Among Learners. Feedbacks solicited from the learners showed that they have under-standing of the importance of studying Mathematics after they learned the life and con-tributions of Rene Descartes to Mathematics. Hence, integration of history plays a vital role in developing positive attitudes among learners towards Math.

Cupriavidus and Burkholderia Species Associated with Agricultural Plants that Grow in Alkaline Soils

        Paulina Estrada-de los Santos,Nora Belinda Vacaseydel-Aceves,Lourdes Martínez-Aguilar,María Antonia Cruz-Hernández,Alberto Mendoza-Herrera,Jesús Caballero-Mellado 한국미생물학회 2011 The journal of microbiology Vol.49 No.6

The presence of Burkholderia, Cupriavidus, and Ralstonia species in northeastern Mexico was investigated. An analysis of the root surrounding soil from different agricultural plants led to the isolation of Burkholderia and Cupriavidus species but no Ralstonia strains. Most Cupriavidus species were unknown and grouped into two clusters according to ARDRA profiles. The 16S rRNA sequence analysis showed that the Cupriavidus isolates were highly related among them and with different Cupriavidus species with validated names. However, SDS-PAGE profiles were distinct among the different ARDRA profiles and to other Cupriavidus species examined, suggesting new species in the genus. This shows that Cupriavidus is more widely associated with plants than previously appreciated. The BCC isolate was 99% similar to B. cenocepacia by recA sequence analysis. Additionally, most Cupriavidus strains from the two largest groups grew on media containing up to 0.1 mg/ml of copper, 10.0 mg/ml arsenic and 1.0 mg/ml zinc. Burkholderia strains grew on media containing up to 10.0 mg/ml zinc, 5.0 mg/ml arsenic and 0.1 mg/ml copper.

      • Mate Intake and Risk of Breast Cancer in Uruguay: a Case-Control Study

Ronco, Alvaro L,De Stefani, Eduardo,Mendoza, Beatriz,Deneo-Pellegrini, Hugo,Vazquez, Alvaro,Abbona, Estela Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.3

Regarding 'mate' intake (infusion of Ilex paraguariensis herb, a staple beverage in temperate South American regions), most epidemiologic studies showed positive associations with risk of some cancers, (e.g. upper aerodigestive tract), but evidence on breast cancer (BC) risk is limited to a previous multi-site study, which reported a non significant odds ratio [OR]=0.85, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.67-1.09, p for trend=0.31) for the highest quartile of intake. The present study was conducted in order to further assess associations of 'mate' intake with BC risk. We combined two databases of women belonging to public and private healthcare hospitals. The sample included 572 BC incident cases and 889 controls interviewed with a specific questionnaire featured by socio-demographic, reproductive and lifestyle variables, and a food frequency questionnaire of 64 items, also analyzing 'mate' intake (consumer status, daily intake, age at start, age at quit, duration of habit, intensity of intake). ORs and their 95%CI were calculated through unconditional logistic regression, adjusting for relevant potential confounders. The highest quartile of 'mate' intake was inversely associated with BC risk (OR=0.40, 95%CI 0.26-0.57, p for trend <0.001). Stratified analyses also displayed strong significant inverse associations for 'mate' in frequent tea drinkers (OR=0.22), high energy intake (OR=0.23), high body mass index (OR=0.29) and in postmenopausal women (OR=0.36), among other results. As conclusions, we found evidence of a significant inverse association for 'mate' intake and BC risk.

Association among stress, salivary cortisol levels, and chronic periodontitis

Refulio, Zoila,Rocafuerte, Marco,de la Rosa, Manuel,Mendoza, Gerardo,Chambrone, Leandro Korean Academy of Periodontology 2013 Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science Vol.43 No.2

Purpose: Chronic periodontitis (CP) seems to be associated with stress and depression, but little information on this possible association is available in the literature. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the association among stress, the salivary cortisol level (SCL), and CP. Methods: Seventy systemically healthy subjects were included in the study from January to September 2011. Full medical and dental histories were obtained, and the following measurements were recorded: 1) probing depth; 2) clinical attachment level; 3) bleeding on probing; and 4) tooth mobility. Saliva samples were collected for the evaluation of SCL (via a highly sensitive electrochemiluminescence immunoassay), and all subjects also answered a questionnaire (i.e., the Zung Self-rating Depression Scale). The odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated, and one way analysis of variance and the Tukey-Kramer method were performed. Results: A total of 36 subjects with CP (51.4%) and 34 without CP were evaluated. Of them, all of the subjects with CP and one periodontally healthy subject were diagnosed with depression. Subjects with moderate CP had statistically significantly higher levels of SCL than subjects with a diagnosis of slight CP (P=0.006). Also, subjects with severe CP showed the same outcome when compared to those with slight CP (P=0.012). In addition, 46 subjects presented high SCL whereas 24 had a normal level. CP was found to be correlated with the SCL, with an OR of 4.14 (95% CI, 1.43 to 12.01). Conclusions: Subjects with a high SCL and depression may show an increased risk for CP.

Combination of Soy Isoflavones, 8-Prenylnaringenin and Melatonin Improves Hot Flashes and Health-Related Quality of Life Outcomes in Postmenopausal Women: Flavie Study

        Carmela Puchol Estrugo,Miriam Trujillo Rodríguez,Nicolás Mendoza-Ladrón de Guevara,Joaquín Grande Gómez,Francisca Ridocci,Maria Teresa Moro-Martín,Misericordia Guinot,Paula Saz-Leal,Concepción Nieto M 대한폐경학회 2023 대한폐경학회지 Vol.29 No.2

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the effects of a combination of soy isoflavones, 8-prenylnaringenin (8-PN), and melatonin in postmenopausal women suffering from moderate-to-severe hot flashes (HFs).Methods: A multicenter, prospective, open-label study enrolled 44 postmenopausal women suffering from moderate-to-severe HFs (≥ 5 daily or ≥ 35 weekly) to receive 54.4 mg standardized soy isoflavones (including 24.5 mg genistein and 16.3 mg daidzein), 100 µg 8-PN, and 1 mg melatonin once daily for 12 weeks. The primary clinical outcomes included changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scores (Menopause-Specific QoL questionnaire [MENQoL] and Cervantes Scale) and HFs following 4 and 12 weeks of treatment. Other analyses included treatment adherence, acceptability, tolerability, and safety. Results: All of the four domains of MENQoL questionnaire significantly improved at 4 weeks (P < 0.05) and 12 weeks (P < 0.001), affecting significantly the vasomotor, psychosocial, and physical spheres (41.2%, 26.3%, and 25.0%; 12 weeks improvements, respectively). Similarly, in the menopause (39.3%) and psychic (51.7%) domains (both P < 0.05 at 12 weeks), the global score of the Cervantes Scale significantly increased at 4 weeks (18.6%) and 12 weeks (35.4%). Accordingly, moderate-to-severe HFs significantly decreased at 4 weeks compared to baseline (41.7% reduction) and further reduced at 12 weeks (76.5%), including the total number of episodes. Conclusions: Food supplements containing soy isoflavones, 8-PN, and melatonin showed an early and progressive benefit for reducing clinically significant HFs and for improving HRQoL across all domains, favorably affecting postmenopausal women’s overall well-being.

      • Essential oil impregnation into graphene sponges with electric desorption control

Mendez, Jose Antonio Cabello,Bueno, Jose de Jesus Perez,Valencia, Jorge Ivan Mendoza,Soto, Jonathan Soto,Lopez, Maria Luisa Mendoza,Guerrero, Mizraim Uriel Flores Techno-Press 2022 Advances in nano research Vol.12 No.6

This work shows the impregnation of scents using a graphene sponge (GS). This was functionalized by the modified Hummers method, pursuing to add different functional groups. It is proposed to achieve the release and seek to control it through electrical potential applied to the graphene sponge with essential oils. The graphene sponge was functionalized and steeped with two kinds of oil. The electrochemical study demonstrates the variation in the electrochemical behaviour of the functionalized graphene sponge without and impregnated with oil. The release of the oil and its aromatic scents was carried out by applying an electrical potential of 30 V, with a release rate of 1.86 mg/min. The heating of the sample that causes the release of oil, associated with the electrical resistance of the system, reaches temperatures of about 150℃. The essential oils, graphene sponge, surfactant, graphene sponge with essential oils, graphene sponge recuperated after applying electric potential, graphene sponge recovered by temperature and dipropylene glycol (DPG) were characterized using Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), digital microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Prebiotic Effect of Mucilage and Pectic-derived Oligosaccharides from Nopal (Opuntia ficus-indica)

Juan Carlos Guevara-Arauza,Jos de Jesús Ornelas-Paz,Diana Jaqueline Pimentel-González,Sergio Rosales Mendoza,Ruth Elena Soria Guerra,Luz María Teresita Paz Maldonado 한국식품과학회 2012 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.21 No.4

Prebiotic effect of mucilage (MO) and pecticderived (PO) oligosaccharides from prickly pear cactus stems was assessed on both cultures and metabolic activity of microbial communities from the human colon. The MO treatment enhanced lactobacilli growth up to 23.8%, while PO increased the bifidobacteria population by 25%. Furthermore, the addition of MO produced a slight decrease in enterococci, enterobacteria, staphylococci, and clostridia of about 4%. Increased levels of the short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) were attained in the cultures at rates of 35 and 16% in response to MO and PO treatments, respectively. Propionic acid (propionate) and butanoic acid (butyrate) production increased at least 50% throughout MO and PO treatments. A decrease in the ammonium level of 11.5% was produced by MO treatment. This research indicates that a mixture of MO and PO oligosaccharides from nopal (Opuntia ficus-indica) could act as prebiotic.

Correlation between pr1 and pr2 Gene Content and Virulence in Metarhizium anisopliae Strains

        ( Ninfa M Rosas Garcia ),( Osvaldo Avalos De Leon ),( Jesus M Villegas Mendoza ),( Maribel Mireles Martinez ),( J E Barboza Corona ),( J C Castaneda Ramirez ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2014 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.24 No.11

Metarhizium anisopliae is a widely studied model to understand the virulence factors that participate in pathogenicity. Proteases such as subtilisin-like enzymes (Pr1) and trypsin-like enzymes (Pr2) are considered important factors for insect cuticle degradation. In four M. anisopliae strains (798, 6342, 6345, and 6347), the presence of pr1 and pr2 genes, as well as the enzymatic activity of these genes, was correlated with their virulence against two different insect pests. The 11 pr1 genes (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, and K) and pr2 gene were found in all strains. The activity of individual Pr1 and Pr2 proteases exhibited variation in time (24, 48, 72, and 96 h) and in the presence or absence of chitin as the inductor. The highest Pr1 enzymatic activity was shown by strain 798 at 48 h with chitin. The highest Pr2 enzymatic activity was exhibited by the 6342 and 6347 strains, both grown with chitin at 24 and 48 h, respectively. Highest mortality on S. exigua was caused by strain 6342 at 48 h, and strains 6342, 6345, and 6347 caused the highest mortality 7 days later. Mortality on Prosapia reached 30% without variation. The presence of subtilisin and trypsin genes and the activity of these proteases in M. anisopliae strains cannot be associated with the virulence against the two insect pests. Probably, subtilisin and trypsin enzyme production is not a vital factor for pathogenicity, but its contribution is important to the pathogenicity process.
