Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) catalyzes the initial fixation of $CO_2$ in $C_4$ plants. Under the control of the rice Rubisco small subunit promoter, cDNA of a $C_4$ SiPPC gene cloned from Seteria italica was introduced into Japonica rice by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Integration of the gene was confirmed by PCR analysis. RT-PCR showed expression of the gene at the RNA level in transgenic plants, and enzyme activity measurements confirmed the increase in PEPC protein. The transformants showed improvements in both photosynthesis rate and yield only under upland field cultivation. The possible function of PEPC in rice stress tolerance is discussed.

Two lipopeptide antibiotics, pelgipeptins C and D, were isolated from Paenibacillus elgii B69 strain. The molecular masses of the two compounds were both determined to be 1,086 Da. Mass-spectrometry, amino acid analysis and NMR spectroscopy indicated that pelgipeptin C was the same compound as BMY-28160, while pelgipeptin D was identified as a new antibiotic of the polypeptin family. These two peptides were active against all the tested microorganisms, including antibiotic-resistant pathogenic bacterial strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Time-kill assays demonstrated that pelgipeptin D exhibited rapid and effective bactericidal action against MRSA at 4×MIC. Based on acute toxicity test, the intraperitoneal LD50 value of pelgipeptin D was slightly higher than that of the structurally related antimicrobial agent polymyxin B. Pelgipeptins are highly potent antibacterial and antifungal agents, particularly against MRSA, and warrant further investigation as possible therapeutic agents for bacteria infections resistant to currently available antibiotics.

Medium Mn steels, one of the most promising 3rd generation advanced high strength steels (AHSS), achieve an encouraging trade-off between the outstanding mechanical property and the production cost. As a typical medium Mn steel, 7Mn steels have superior mechanical property but their poor cross-tension property becomes the Achilles’ heel, hindering the application in the automotive industry. The current study focuses on the cross-tension property of the resistance spot weld of 7Mn steel. Generally, martensite is produced in the nugget during the resistance spot welding (RSW). However, the microstructure in the weld nugget can be correspondingly tuned by directly optimizing the welding parameters. With post-weld pulses, in situ tempering occurs, which can decrease the segregation of Mn existing along martensite lath boundaries and facilitate the microstructure transition from martensite to tempered martensite. The tuning on the nugget microstructure facilitates the increase of cross-tension strength (CTS) from 1.5 to 3.7 kN. Although both cases fail in an interfacial fracture mode, a partial ductile fracture is demonstrated in the specimen with post-weld treatment, which is attributed to the occurrence of low-carbon α phase and second phase particles. This study elucidates that the decrease of segregation and the microstructure transition in the nugget are the dominant factor determining the CTS. It is therefore demonstrated that the reduction of Mn segregation and the formation of tempered martensite can increase the weldability of RSW joints of the medium Mn steels.

Among the 3rd generation advanced high strength steels, medium Mn steels receive extensive attention sed in modern automotive industry attributing to their encouraging mechanical performance and lower production cost. Unfortunately, the poor cross-tension property of 7Mn steel, one of the typical medium Mn steels, remains a key challenge to hinder its application in automotive industry. In this study, multiple post-weld heat treatment (MPWHT) consisting of cyclic heat treatment and intercritical annealing was employed to improve the cross-tension property of the resistance spot weld of 7Mn steel. With this method, the diffusion of Mn was significantly enhanced, eliminating their severe segregation along the martensite lath boundaries. Additionally, MPWHT facilitated the structure tailoring: the cyclic heat treatment between room and austenization temperature produced the so-called martensitic transformation induced grain refinement and austenite stability while the intercritical annealing triggered austenite reversion transformation, leading to a mixed structure of refined ferrite and austenite across the weld. With the optimization in composition homogeneity and structure tuning, the cross-tension strength (CTS) of a resistance spot welded 7Mn steel stood at 12.7 kN, which is so far the ultrahigh level to our best knowledge. Moreover, this effort brought on button failure mode, suggesting the dominant ductility deformation during the cross-tension test. In a word, the current study achieved an exceptional trade-off between the outstanding CTS and ductility of the resistance spot weld of 7Mn steel by the MPWHT consisting of cyclic heat treatment and intercritical annealing.

On the condition of strong electron-LO phonon coupling in a RbCl quantum pseudodot (QPD), the ground state energy and the mean number of phonons are calculated by using the Pekar variational method and quantum statistical theory. The variations of the ground state energy and the mean number with respect to the temperature and the cyclotron frequency of the magnetic field are studied in detail. We find that the absolute value of the ground state energy increases (decreases) with increasing temperature when the temperature is in the lower (higher) temperature region, and that the mean number increases with increasing temperature. The absolute value of the ground state energy is a decreasing function of the cyclotron frequency of the magnetic field whereas the mean number is an increasing function of it. We find two ways to tune the ground state energy and the mean number: controlling the temperature and controlling the cyclotron frequency of the magnetic field.

Background: Previous studies have assessed the association between the Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte Antigen-4(CTLA-4) polymorphism with the risk of malignant bone tumor, but the conclusions were inconsistent. We aimed to clarify association of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 polymorphisms with malignant bone tumors risk by performing a meta-analysis. Materials and Methods: The databases including PubMed, EMBase databases and the Cochrane Library were searched to identify the eligible studies prior to January 30 2016. Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were used to estimate the strengths of the association between the CTLA-4 polymorphism and the malignant bone tumor risks. The meta-analysis was performed by STATA 12.0. Results: Four individual studies with a total of 1003 cases with malignant bone tumor and 1162 controls were included in our meta-analysis. The results of meta-analysis on those data demonstrated that CTLA-4 +49G>A polymorphism was associated with the risk of Ewing's sarcoma and osteosarcoma strongly (A vs. G: OR=1.36, 95%CI:1.20-1.54, p=0.000; AA+AG vs. GG: OR=1.35, 95%CI:1.14-1.61, p=0.001; AA vs. GG: OR=2.24, 95%CI:1.67-2.99, p=0.000; AA vs. AG+GG: OR=2.00, 95%CI:1.53-2.62, p=0.000), but CTLA-4 -318C/T polymorphism was not associated with the risk of malignant bone tumor (C vs. T: OR=0.76, 95%CI:0.76-1.08, p= 0.262; CC+CT vs. TT: OR=0.70, 95%CI:0.41-1.20, p= 0.198; CC vs. TT: OR=0.69, 95%CI:0.40-1.19, p= 0.183; CC vs. CT+TT: OR=0.92, 95%CI:0.75-1.13, p= 0.419). Subgroup analysis showed that there are significantly positive correlations between CTLA-4 +49G>A polymorphism and increased risks of malignant bone tumors in large size of sample (A vs. G: OR=1.347, 95%CI: 1.172,1.548, p=0.000; AA vs. GG: OR=2.228, 95%CI: 1.608,3.085, p=0.000), Ewing's Sarcoma or Osteosarcoma (A vs. G: OR=1.361, 95%CI: 1.201,1.540, p=0.000; AA vs. GG: OR=2.236, 95%CI: 1.674,2.986, p=0.000), and PCR-RFLP or Sequencing(A vs. G: OR=1.361, 95%CI: 1.201,1.540, p=0.000; AA vs. GG: OR=2.236, 95%CI: 1.674,2.986, p=0.000), but CTLA-4 -318C/T polymorphism was not associated with the risk of malignant bone tumors in diagnosis, genotype method, and sample size (all p>0.05). Conclusions: CTLA-4 +49A/G variant was associated with an increased risk of developing the malignant bone tumors, such as Ewing's sarcoma and osteosarcoma. However, it failed to show the association between CTLA-4 -318C/T polymorphism and the risk of malignant bone tumors. Future large-scale studies remain to be done to confirm our conclusions.

In this work, the effect of parabolic potential on the properties of strongly coupled polaron in an asymmetric Gaussian quantum well (QW) has been studied. Relations of the frequency vibration and the strongly coupled polaron’s ground-state energy in an asymmetric Gaussian QW for RbCl crystals at different confinement strengths along the x and the y directions, the asymmetric Gaussian QW barrier heights, and the Gaussian confinement potential widths and temperatures have been studied using the Lee–Low–Pines unitary transformation and the linear combination operator methods. Calculations show that the absolute value of ground-state energy increased with increasing confinement strengths along the x and the y directions and asymmetric Gaussian QW barrier height, and derease with increeasing Gaussian confinement potential width, and temperature. In addition, vibrational frequency was found to decrease with increasing Gaussian confinement potential width and to increase with increasing confinement strengths along the x and the y directions, asymmetric Gaussian QW barrier height, and temperature. The five parameters involved in this paper are important physical quantities for studying the properties of Gaussian QWs, and have important physical significance for the study of nanomaterials.
Low-Cost SVM-DTC Strategy of Induction Machine Drives Using Single DC-link Current Sensor

In conventional direct torque control (DTC) using space-vector modulation (SVM) of induction machine (IM) drives, at least three current sensors are needed. In this paper, a low-cost SVM-DTC strategy is proposed, in which only a single current sensor is used. The position of the voltage space vector is divided into two areas: effective and non-effective area. If it is located in the non-effective area, the voltage space vector will be shifted into the effective area with minimum distortion. Further, the switching frequency remains constant. The simulation is carried out on a MATLAB/Simulink platform and the simulated results verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

Background/Aims: Total proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) is widely accepted as a radical surgery for refractory ulcerative colitis (UC). Definite results on the appropriate pouch length for an evaluation of the risk-to-benefit ratio regarding technical complications and long-term quality of life (QOL) are still scarce. Methods: Data on UC patients who underwent IPAA from 2008 to 2022 in four well-established pouch centers affiliated to China UC Pouch Center Union were collected. Results: A total of 208 patients with a median follow-up time of 6.0 years (interquartile range, 2.3 to 9.0 years) were enrolled. The median lengths of the patients’ short and long pouches were 14.0 cm (interquartile range, 14.0 to 15.0 cm) and 22.0 cm (interquartile range, 20.0 to 24.0 cm), respectively. Patients with a short J pouch configuration were less likely to achieve significantly improved long-term QOL (p=0.015) and were prone to develop late postoperative complications (p=0.042), such as increased defecation frequency (p=0.003) and pouchitis (p=0.035). A short ileal pouch was an independent risk factor for the development of late postoperative complications (odds ratio, 3.100; 95% confidence interval, 1.519 to 6.329; p=0.002) and impaired long-term QOL improvement (odds ratio, 2.221; 95% confidence interval, 1.218 to 4.050, p=0.009). Conclusions: The length of the J pouch was associated with the improvement in long-term QOL and the development of late post-IPAA complications. A long J pouch configuration could be a considerable surgical option for pouch construction.
