• Simple Culling Methods for Continuous Collision Detection of Deforming Triangles

Xinyu Zhang,Kim, Young J. IEEE 2012 IEEE transactions on visualization and computer gr Vol.18 No.7

We present a simple and efficient approach for continuous collision detection of deforming triangles based on conservative advancement. The efficiency of our approach is due to a sequence of simple collision-free conditions for deforming triangles. In our experiment, we show that our CCD algorithm achieves 2-30 times performance improvement over existing algorithms for triangle primitives.

Interactive Collision Detection for Deformable Models Using Streaming AABBs

Xinyu Zhang,Kim, Y.J. IEEE Computer Society 2007 IEEE transactions on visualization and computer gr Vol.13 No.2

We present an interactive and accurate collision detection algorithm for deformable, polygonal objects based on the streaming computational model. Our algorithm can detect all possible pairwise primitive-level intersections between two severely deforming models at highly interactive rates. In our streaming computational model, we consider a set of axis aligned bounding boxes (AABBs) that bound each of the given deformable objects as an input stream and perform massively-parallel pairwise, overlapping tests onto the incoming streams. As a result, we are able to prevent performance stalls in the streaming pipeline that can be caused by expensive indexing mechanism required by bounding volume hierarchy-based streaming algorithms. At runtime, as the underlying models deform overtime, we employ a novel, streaming algorithm to update the geometric changes in the AABB streams. Moreover, in order to get only the computed result (i.e., collision results between AABBs) without reading back the entire output streams, we propose a streaming en/decoding strategy that can be performed in a hierarchical fashion. After determining overlapped AABBs, we perform a primitive-level (e.g., triangle) intersection checking on a serial computational model such as CPUs. We implemented the entire pipeline of our algorithm using off-the-shelf graphics processors (GPUs), such as nVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX, for streaming computations, and Intel Dual Core 3.4G processors for serial computations. We benchmarked our algorithm with different models of varying complexities, ranging from 15K up to 50K triangles, under various deformation motions, and the timings were obtained as 30~100 FPS depending on the complexity of models and their relative configurations. Finally, we made comparisons with a well-known GPU-based collision detection algorithm, CULLIDE and observed about three times performance improvement over the earlier approach. We also made comparisons with a SW-based AABB culling algorithm and observed about two times improvement

Scalable Collision Detection Using p-Partition Fronts on Many-Core Processors

Xinyu Zhang,Kim, Young J. IEEE Computer Society 2014 IEEE transactions on visualization and computer gr Vol. No.

We present a new parallel algorithm for collision detection using many-core computing platforms of CPUs or GPUs. Based on the notion of a p-partition front, our algorithm is able to evenly partition and distribute the workload of BVH traversal among multiple processing cores without the need for dynamic balancing, while minimizing the memory overhead inherent to the state-of-the-art parallel collision detection algorithms. We demonstrate the scalability of our algorithm on different benchmarking scenarios with and without using temporal coherence, including dynamic simulation of rigid bodies, cloth simulation, and random collision courses. In these experiments, we observe nearly linear performance improvement in terms of the number of processing cores on the CPUs and GPUs.

Comparison of Clinical and Radiographic Outcomes Between Transforaminal Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy and Microdiscectomy: A Follow-up Exceeding 5 Years

        Xinyu Yang,Shijun Zhang,Junxiao Su,Sai Guo,Yakubu Ibrahim,Kai Zhang,Yonghao Tian,Lianlei Wang,Suomao Yuan,Xinyu Liu 대한척추신경외과학회 2024 Neurospine Vol.21 No.1

Objective: To compare the long-term clinical and radiographic outcomes of transforaminal endoscopic lumbar discectomy (TELD) versus microdiscectomy (MD). Methods: The data of 154 patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH) who underwent TELD (n = 89) or MD (n = 65) were retrospectively analyzed. The patients’ clinical outcomes were evaluated using visual analogue scales for leg and low back pain, the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score, and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). The evolution of radiographic manifestations was observed during follow-up. Potential risk factors for a poor clinical outcome were investigated. Results: During a mean follow-up of 5.5 years (range, 5–7 years), the recurrence rate was 4.49% in the TELD group and 1.54% in the MD group. All scores significantly improved from preoperatively to postoperatively in both groups (p < 0.01). The improvement in the ODI and JOA scores was significantly greater in the TELD than MD group (p < 0.05). Forty-seven patients (52.8%) in the TELD group and 32 (49.2%) in the MD group had Modic changes before surgery, most of which showed no changes at the last follow-up. The degeneration grades of 292 discs (71.0%) were unchanged at the last follow-up, while 86 (20.9%) showed improvement, mostly at the upper adjacent segment. No significant difference was observed in the intervertebral height index or paraspinal muscle-disc ratio. Conclusion: Both TELD and MD provide generally satisfactory long-term clinical outcomes for patients with LDH. TELD can be used as a reliable alternative to MD with less surgical trauma. Modic type II changes, decreased preoperative intervertebral height, and a high body mass index are predictors of a poor prognosis. A highly efficient multi-stage dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)-catalytic system for simultaneous toluene degradation and O3 elimination

        Xinyu Hu,Shijie Li,Xiaoqing Dang,Yufei Zhang,Qian Zhang,Huachun Zheng 한국공업화학회 2022 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.105 No.-

DBD-catalytic system has been widely studied for volatile organic compounds abatement, whereas howto obtain high mineralization rate and low zone emission synchronously remains a challenge. In view ofthis, a new type of multi-stage DBD-catalytic system (MS1) was established to abatement toluene in thisstudy. The mineralization rates of reactors IPC (63.81%) and MS1 (61.14%) were much higher than MS2,PPC1 and PPC2 reactors, which were 48.36%, 46.84%, and 5.8% at 33.8 (Vp-p) kV, respectively. For exportozone concentration, IPC reactor had the highest concentration of 160 ppm, and the values of reactorsMS1, MS2, PPC1, and PPC2 were 79, 34.2, 34.25 and 29 ppm, respectively. The catalyst filled in zone IIcan be utilized to further decompose the residual toluene and intermediates and also promote thedecomposition of ozone, which lead to the superior performance of the MS1 reactor. The influence ofapplied voltage, adsorbed amount, and discharge time on the toluene removal performance was investigatedto optimize the operation parameters of MS1 reactor, their appropriate values were 28.3–31.1 (Vpp)kV, 0.179–0.223 mmol, 1 h, respectively. Lastly, the contribution of disparate zones in multi-stageDBD-catalytic system to the toluene degradation were elucidated on the basis of the GC–MS results.

Surface oxidation of PAN‑based ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers (UHMCFs) and its effect on the properties of UHMCF/EP composites

        Xinyu Wang,Xin Qian,Yonggang Zhang,Xuefei Wang,Shulin Song,Cheng Zhang 한국탄소학회 2021 Carbon Letters Vol.31 No.3

In this study, nitric acid oxidation with varied treatment temperature and time was conducted on the surfaces of polyacrylonitrile- based ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and surface tension/dynamic contact angle instruments were used to investigate changes in surface topography and chemical functionality before and after surface treatment. Results showed that the nitric acid oxidation of ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers resulted in decreases in the values of the crystallite thickness Lc and graphitization degree. Meanwhile, increased treating temperature and time made the decreases more obviously. The surfaces of ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers became much more activity and functionality after surface oxidation, e.g., the total surface energy of oxidized samples at 80 °C for 1 h increased by 27.7% compared with untreated fibers. Effects of surface nitric acid oxidation on the mechanical properties of ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers and its reinforced epoxy composites were also researched. Significant decreases happened to the tensile modulus of fibers due to decreased Lc value after the nitric acid oxidation. However, surface treatment had little effect on the tensile strength even as the treating temperature and processing time increased. The highest interfacial shear strength of ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers/epoxy composites increased by 25.7% after the nitric acid oxidation. In the final, surface oxidative mechanism of ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers in the nitric acid oxidation was studied. Different trends of the tensile strength and tensile modulus of fibers in the nitric acid oxidation resulted from the typical skin–core structure.

Digital Orientation for Emerging Multinationals and the Location Strategies in Internationalization: The Chinese Experience

        Xinyue Zhang,Bo Kyung Kim,Jooyoung Kwak 강원대학교 경영경제연구소 2023 Asia-Pacific Journal of Business Vol.14 No.3

Purpose- Despite the ongoing digital transformation, it is not clear whether emerging market firms follow their manufacturing FDI path in the emerging digital industries. This paper examines how digital orientation affects the location strategies in internationalization and how the existing innovation capacities moderate the link between digital orientation and the location strategies. Design/methodology/approach- This study chooses the Chinese setting for research design because digital transformation is already prevalent in the society and the cases of outward expansion are salient among the emerging markets. It uses the panel dataset of 976 Chinese listed firms that consists of 6,648 observations spanning from 2007 to 2017. Ordinary least square regression is used for the statistical approach with a one-year lag in the model. Findings- Digital orientation increases a likelihood of emerging multinationals’ entries in developed countries, and a high level of innovative capacities strengthens the link. Two groups seem to prefer entries in developed countries: firms with a high level of digital orientation with a high level of innovative capacities and firms with a low level of digital orientation, if with a low level of innovative capacities. The former reflects the context of digital transformation and the latter hints at the tax avoidance or interests in real estate. Research implications or originality -While emerging multinationals are known to prefer entries in developing countries for capacity arbitrage, our results forecast that their FDI strategies may have a drastic change as digital transformation deepens.
