Prevalence of Hepatitis B Virus Infection in Kaifeng, China: A 5-year Observation
Zhang, Jinli,Ma, Chunyan,Li, Hang,Steele, Michael,Idris, Adi The Korean Society for Microbiology and Biotechnol 2018 한국미생물·생명공학회지 Vol.46 No.4
Hepatitis B is a major health problem in China. However, little is known about the prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in Kaifeng, the major urban capital of Henan province, China. We found that HBV prevalence increased with age and that chronic HBV was predominant in adult males in Kaifeng. The HBV prevalence remained unchanged over a 5-year period for all age groups. Alarmingly, 25% of the population remained unvaccinated and potentially susceptible to future HBV infection. HBV immunization and health education initiatives should be carried out in this population to further reduce the overall prevalence of HBV.
Genome Wide Proteomics of ERBB2 and EGFR and Other Oncogenic Pathways in Inflammatory Breast Cancer
Zhang, Emma Yue,Cristofanilli, Massimo,Robertson, Fredika,Reuben, James M.,Mu, Zhaomei,Beavis, Ronald C.,Im, Hogune,Snyder, Michael,Hofree, Matan,Ideker, Trey,Omenn, Gilbert S.,Fanayan, Susan,Jeong, S American Chemical Society 2013 Journal of proteome research Vol.12 No.6
<P>In this study we selected three breast cancer cell lines (SKBR3, SUM149 and SUM190) with different oncogene expression levels involved in ERBB2 and EGFR signaling pathways as a model system for the evaluation of selective integration of subsets of transcriptomic and proteomic data. We assessed the oncogene status with reads per kilobase per million mapped reads (RPKM) values for ERBB2 (14.4, 400, and 300 for SUM149, SUM190, and SKBR3, respectively) and for EGFR (60.1, not detected, and 1.4 for the same 3 cell lines). We then used RNA-Seq data to identify those oncogenes with significant transcript levels in these cell lines (total 31) and interrogated the corresponding proteomics data sets for proteins with significant interaction values with these oncogenes. The number of observed interactors for each oncogene showed a significant range, e.g., 4.2% (JAK1) to 27.3% (MYC). The percentage is measured as a fraction of the total protein interactions in a given data set vs total interactors for that oncogene in STRING (Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins, version 9.0) and I2D (Interologous Interaction Database, version 1.95). This approach allowed us to focus on 4 main oncogenes, ERBB2, EGFR, MYC, and GRB2, for pathway analysis. We used bioinformatics sites GeneGo, PathwayCommons and NCI receptor signaling networks to identify pathways that contained the four main oncogenes and had good coverage in the transcriptomic and proteomic data sets as well as a significant number of oncogene interactors. The four pathways identified were ERBB signaling, EGFR1 signaling, integrin outside-in signaling, and validated targets of C-MYC transcriptional activation. The greater dynamic range of the RNA-Seq values allowed the use of transcript ratios to correlate observed protein values with the relative levels of the ERBB2 and EGFR transcripts in each of the four pathways. This provided us with potential proteomic signatures for the SUM149 and 190 cell lines, growth factor receptor-bound protein 7 (GRB7), Crk-like protein (CRKL) and Catenin delta-1 (CTNND1) for ERBB signaling; caveolin 1 (CAV1), plectin (PLEC) for EGFR signaling; filamin A (FLNA) and actinin alpha1 (ACTN1) (associated with high levels of EGFR transcript) for integrin signalings; branched chain amino-acid transaminase 1 (BCAT1), carbamoyl-phosphate synthetase (CAD), nucleolin (NCL) (high levels of EGFR transcript); transferrin receptor (TFRC), metadherin (MTDH) (high levels of ERBB2 transcript) for MYC signaling; S100-A2 protein (S100A2), caveolin 1 (CAV1), Serpin B5 (SERPINB5), stratifin (SFN), PYD and CARD domain containing (PYCARD), and EPH receptor A2 (EPHA2) for PI3K signaling, p53 subpathway. Future studies of inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), from which the cell lines were derived, will be used to explore the significance of these observations.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jprobs/2013/jprobs.2013.12.issue-6/pr4001527/production/images/medium/pr-2013-001527_0010.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/pr4001527'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
Moringa extract enhances the fermentative, textural, and bioactive properties of yogurt
Zhang, Ting,Jeong, Chang Hee,Cheng, Wei Nee,Bae, Hyojin,Seo, Han Geuk,Petriello, Michael C.,Han, Sung Gu Elsevier 2019 FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY -ZURICH- Vol.101 No.-
<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Yogurt is a fermented dairy food produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB). <I>Moringa oleifera</I> is known for its bioactive properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of moringa on the fermentation, quality characteristics, and bioactive properties of yogurt. Yogurt was supplemented with 0–0.2% moringa extract (ME; hot water extract, 100 °C, 30 min) and fermented using mixed starter cultures (<I>Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus,</I> and <I>Bifidobacterium longum</I>). Addition of ME to yogurt significantly accelerated the rate of fermentation by promoting growth of LAB. ME reduced syneresis up to 21% and enhanced the water-holding capacity by 17%. The viscosity of 0.2% ME yogurt was approximately 5-fold higher than control yogurt and radical-scavenging activity of ME yogurt increased up to 40% in a dose-dependent manner during the 21 days of cold storage. Sensory testing showed that the addition of 0.05% ME to yogurt did not negatively influence the overall acceptability of the product, compared to the control. The addition of ME to yogurt decreased the oxidative stress and increased the expression of antioxidant proteins in human colon cells. Thus, ME-fermented yogurt maintains the sensory acceptability and exerts positive health benefits because of increased LAB proliferation and enhanced antioxidant properties.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Addition of moringa extract (ME) to yogurt accelerated fermentation rate. </LI> <LI> ME reduced syneresis and enhanced the water-holding capacity of yogurt. </LI> <LI> Viscosity and radical-scavenging activity increased in ME yogurt over 21 days. </LI> <LI> ME increased the expression of antioxidant proteins in human intestinal cells. </LI> <LI> ME yogurt maintains sensory acceptability and possesses antioxidant effects. </LI> </UL> </P>

This study investigated whether the Point of attachment (POA) theory can be used to measure the consumption intention on go and watch offline eSports games. The admiration for players, social interaction, and on-site consumption requirements for viewing offline eSports competitions are prioritized. In addition, eSports fans in various regions may have distinct consumption concepts and consumption patterns. Thus, this study surveyed China (n = 156) and South Korea (n = 127) eSports fans who subjectively perceive themselves to be fans of eSports player(s) and who have observed at least one offline eSports game. The results demonstrate that player attraction and socialization have positive and significant effects on offline consumption factors. There is no correlation between previous consumption behavior and satisfaction, but dining shows a significant positive effect on satisfaction. Moreover, there is a strong relationship between satisfaction and future attendance intention. In addition, effect of eSports fan attachment on future visit intentions are measured and there is no correlation between the two variables. The front end of the path in the new model's varied between Chinese and Korean supporters. Finally, theoretical and practical implications of this study are discussed.
Neural Stem Cells and Ischemic Brain
Zhenggang Zhang,Michael Chopp 대한뇌졸중학회 2016 Journal of stroke Vol.18 No.3
Stroke activates neural stem cells in the ventricular-subventricular zone (V/SVZ) of the lateral ventricle, which increases neuroblasts and oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs). Within the ischemic brain, neural stem cells, neuroblasts and OPCs appear to actively communicate with cerebral endothelial cells and other brain parenchymal cells to mediate ischemic brain repair; however, stroke-induced neurogenesis unlikely plays any significant roles in neuronal replacement. In this mini-review, we will discuss recent findings how intercellular communications between stroke-induced neurogenesis and oligodendrogenesis and brain parenchymal cells could potentially facilitate brain repair processes.

<P>In this paper, we present a novel device which comprises a DFB laser with electroabsorption modulators integrated on both sides. This integrated chip provides two independently modulated optical outputs from a single laser source and thus cuts the required number of chips for multilane applications in half. Both outputs can be simultaneously operated with 56 Gb/s NRZ leading to 112 Gb/s from a single chip. The performance of the chip is further tested in an optical PAM4 generation experiment. The two NRZ modulated outputs are combined with a polarization combiner to generate an optical PAM4 signal which on the receiver side is measured with a polarization insensitive photodetector.</P>
