Steam-Chest Molding of Expanded Polypropylene Foams. 2. Mechanism of Interbead Bonding
Zhai, Wentao,Kim, Young-Wook,Jung, Dong Won,Park, Chul B. American Chemical Society 2011 INDUSTRIAL & ENGINEERING CHEMISTRY RESEARCH - Vol.50 No.9
<P>Expanded polypropylene (EPP) bead foams were processed using steam-chest molding. Interbead bonds formed during processing and was characterized by observing both the product surface and the fracture surfaces using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and by measuring the tensile properties of specimens. It was found that both the degree of interbead bonding and the tensile strength had a direct relationship to the steam pressure/temperature and that high steam temperature enhanced the crystallization behavior of EPP beads during the cooling process. A formation mechanism of interbead bonding during processing was proposed based on the crystal melting behaviors, as discussed in the first article of this series (<name name-style='western'>Zhai</name> et al. Ind. Eng. Chem. Res.<x xml:space='preserve'> </x>2010<x xml:space='preserve'>, </x>49<x xml:space='preserve'>, </x>9822). Possible parameters influencing the formation of interbead bonding, namely, steam temperature/pressure and bead foam expansion ratio, were investigated in this study. The effect of postannealing of the EPP products on the shrinkage and crystallinity of the molded EPP products was also addressed.</P>

Few studies have attempted to characterize the pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) immunoglobulin Y (IgY) heavy chain constant region. In the present study, fragments of the pheasant IgY heavy chain constant region were cloned, analyzed, and expressed. The cross-reactivity of IgY or immunoglobulin G (IgG)s with antigens from other vertebrate species was determined using dot-enzymelinked immunosorbent assay and western blot analysis. Five peptides of the pheasant IgY heavy chain constant region were synthesized to determine its immunoregulatory activity in vitro. The IgY heavy chain constant region from pheasant showed the highest homology with that from chicken (71.2 %) and duck (49.1 %). Phylogenetic analysis for IgY showed that pheasant was closely related to chicken and duck than to any other analyzed vertebrate species. The rabbit anti-chicken IgG showed immunologic cross-reactivity with recombinant proteins of the pheasant IgY heavy chain constant region. Four peptides were able to induce significant up-regulation of interleukin (IL)-1b, IL-4, and interferon-c in chicken peripheral blood lymphocytes, suggesting a new role of avian IgY in immune regulation.

The ancient Chinese wild rice (Zizania latifolia (Griseb) Turcz) (CWR) has valuable biological and medicinal functions. To assess the advantages lost in modern cultivated rice after domestication, we compared the composition of bioactive compounds and the results of proteomic analysis with those of Indica rice (N22). We used routine methods to determine the protein, total dietary fiber, amino acid, mineral substance, plant secondary metabolites, and amino acid composition of CWR and N22. The protein and mineral contents of CWR were two times that of N22, and the levels of calcium, potassium, magnesium, chromium, iron, and zinc were significantly higher than those of N22 (P < .05). There was ~7.6 times more dietary fiber in CWR than in N22, but fewer carbohydrates (P < .05). Anthocyanins and chlorophyll were detected in CWR, but were absent from N22. Compared with N22, CWR had 53, 19, and 5.4 times higher (P < .05) levels of saponins, flavonoids, and plant sterols, respectively. The amino acid score of CWR was 66.6, which was significantly higher than N22. Sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) indicated that the main seed proteins of CWR were glutelins, including both acid and alkaline subunits, which were approximately twice those of N22. To investigate the differences in protein profiles between CWR and N22, we conducted two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) analysis of the total proteins in the seeds of the two rice species. 2-DE gels revealed 19 differentially expressed proteins. Information obtained from peptide mass fingerprinting indicates that glutelin precursor caffeoyl coenzyme A (CoA) O-methyltransferase and putative bithoraxoid-like protein can provide good gene sources for improving rice quality.
An Integrated Simulation Method to Support Virtual Factory Engineering
Zhai, Wenbin,Fan, Xiumin,Yan, Juanqi,Zhu, Pengsheng Society for Computational Design and Engineering 2002 International Journal of CAD/CAM Vol.2 No.1
This paper presents a structure and architecture of an integrated simulation method (ISM) to meet the requirements of virtual factory engineering (VFE). Combining CAD, VR and discrete event simulation techniques, the ISM provides static and dynamic simulation functions for implementation of VFE throughout the lifecycle. The static simulation can be used to evaluate the factory layout. The dynamic simulation enables us to evaluate ergonomics of factory, process performance of production system, feasibility of production plan and operation of factory, and to train operators safely, which cover the whole VFE lifecycle. The principles of the key techniques of VFE, including virtual factory data management system (VFDMS), static and dynamic simulation, are also discussed. To demonstrate and validate the ISM, a case study has been carried out in an assembly factory.
The use of poly-cation oxides to lower the temperature of two-step thermochemical water splitting
Zhai, Shang,Rojas, Jimmy,Ahlborg, Nadia,Lim, Kipil,Toney, Michael F.,Jin, Hyungyu,Chueh, William C.,Majumdar, Arun The Royal Society of Chemistry 2018 ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE Vol.11 No.8
<P>We report the discovery of a new class of oxides - poly-cation oxides (PCOs) - that consist of multiple cations and can thermochemically split water in a two-step cycle to produce hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2). Specifically, we demonstrate H2 yields of 10.1 ± 0.5 mL-H2 per g and 1.4 ± 0.5 mL-H2 per g from (FeMgCoNi)Ox (<I>x</I> ≈ 1.2) with thermal reduction temperatures of 1300 °C and 1100 °C, respectively, and also with background H2 during the water splitting step. Remarkably, these capacities are mostly higher than those from measurements and thermodynamic analysis of state-of-the-art materials such as (substituted) ceria and spinel ferrites. Such high-performance two-step cycles ≤1100 °C are practically relevant for today's chemical infrastructure at large scale, which relies almost exclusively on thermochemical transformations in this temperature regime. It is likely that PCOs with complex cation compositions will offer new opportunities for both fundamental investigations of redox thermochemistry as well as scalable H2 production using infrastructure-compatible chemical systems.</P>

Background: Esophageal cancer is one of the most frequently occurring malignancies and the seventh leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the world. The esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is the most common histological type of esophageal cancer worldwide. Materials and Methods: Our goal in this study was to detect phospholipase A2 Group IIA (PLA2G2A) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) immuno-expression in ESCC in a high-risk population in China. Results: Positive expression of PLA2G2A protein was observed in 57.2% (166/290) of the cases, while COX-2 was found in 257 of 290 samples (88.6%), both PLA2G2A and COX-2 being expressed in 153 cases (52.8%), with a significant agreement (Kappa=0.091, p=0.031).Overexpression of PLA2G2A was significantly correlated with the depth of invasion (p=0.001). Co-expression of PLA2G2A and COX-2 not only significantly correlated with the depth of invasion (p=0.004) but also with TNM stage (p=0.04). Conclusions: Our results showed that in patients with ESCC, PLA2G2A overexpression and PLA2G2A co-expression with COX-2 is significantly correlated with advanced stage. The biological role and pathophysiologic regulation of PLA2G2A and COX-2 overexpression in ESCC deserve further investigation.

Objective: To evaluate the performance of baseline clinical characteristics and pretherapeutic histogram parameters derived from T2 mapping of the extraocular muscles (EOMs) in the prediction of treatment response to intravenous glucocorticoid (IVGC) therapy for active and moderate-to-severe thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) and to investigate the effect of fat-suppression (FS) in T2 mapping in this prediction. Materials and Methods: A total of 79 patients clinically diagnosed with active, moderate-to-severe TAO (47 female, 32 male; mean age ± standard deviation, 46.1 ± 10 years), including 43 patients with a total of 86 orbits in the responsive group and 36 patients with a total of 72 orbits in the unresponsive group, were enrolled. Baseline clinical characteristics and pretherapeutic histogram parameters derived from T2 mapping with FS (i.e., FS T2 mapping) or without FS (i.e., conventional T2 mapping) of EOMs were compared between the two groups. Independent predictors of treatment response to IVGC were identified using multivariable analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to evaluate the predictive performance of the prediction models. Differences between the models were examined using the DeLong test. Results: Compared to the unresponsive group, the responsive group had a shorter disease duration, lower kurtosis (FSkurtosis), lower standard deviation, larger 75th, 90th, and 95th (FS-95th) T2 relaxation times in FS mapping and lower kurtosis in conventional T2 mapping. Multivariable analysis revealed that disease duration, FS-95th percentile, and FS-kurtosis were independent predictors of treatment response. The combined model, integrating all identified predictors, had an optimized area under the ROC curve of 0.797, 88.4% sensitivity, and 62.5% specificity, which were significantly superior to those of the imaging model (p = 0.013). Conclusion: An integrated combination of disease duration, FS-95th percentile, and FS-kurtosis was a potential predictor of treatment response to IVGC in patients with active and moderate-to-severe TAO. FS T2 mapping was superior to conventional T2 mapping in terms of prediction.
