        Nitrogen-doped Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes-MnCo<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> microsphere as electrocatalyst for efficient oxygen reduction reaction

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Nitrogen-doped Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes (N-doped MWCNT)/MnCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> hybrid is synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The X-ray diffraction studies revealed the single phase formation of cubic spinel structured MnCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> and their composites. The presence of D and G band of MWCNT is identified through Raman spectral analysis. The elemental oxidation state and nitrogen content is obtained using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which elucidates that Co and Mn exists in multivalence state and the nitrogen functional groups are in pyrolytic and pyridinic-type. FE-SEM shows the microsphere formation of MnCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> and size exhibits in the range of 6–9 μm. The N-doped MWCNT/MnCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> hybrid catalyst exhibits an improved oxygen reduction electrocatalytic activity in an aqueous alkaline medium when compared with pristine MnCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB>.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> N-doped MWCNT composite with MnCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> was prepared by single step hydrothermal method. </LI> <LI> The half-wave potentials of MWCNT-MnCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> is 30 mV higher than MWCNT and 150 mV higher than MnCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> catalyst. </LI> <LI> MWCNT-MnCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> hybrid exhibits an improved ORR activity in an aqueous alkaline medium compared to pristine samples. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Enhanced efficiency and stability of polymer solar cells using solutionprocessed nickel oxide as hole transport material

        Solution-processed nickel oxide (s-NiOx) was synthesized for use as hole-transport layers (HTLs) in the fabrication of polymer solar cell (PSC) devices. The s-NiOx thin-films were deposited using spin-coating and post-annealed at 300 C, 400 C, or 500 C. With increased annealing temperature, the nickel acetate precursor decomposes more fully and forms s-NiOx films that show larger crystalline grain sizes with lower root mean square surface roughness. Bulk heterojunction solar cells fabricated with the new random polymer RP(BDT-PDBT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C70-butyric acid methyl ester (PC70BM) using s-NiOx as HTLs exhibit a 4.46% enhancement in power conversion efficiency and better stability compared to conventional PSCs using poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) as HTLs. We believe that the solution-processable and highly stable s-NiOx could be a potential alternative for functional interface materials in optoelectronic devices.

        PCR based detection of genes encoding virulence determinants in Staphylococcus aureus from bovine subclinical mastitis cases

        The present study was carried out to genotypically characterize Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) isolated from bovine mastitis cases. A total of 37 strains of S. aureus were isolated during processing of 552 milk samples from 140 cows. The S. aureus strains were characterized phenotypically, and were further characterized genotypically by polymerase chain reaction using oligonucleotide primers that amplified genes encoding coagulase (coa), clumping factor (clfA), thermonuclease (nuc), enterotoxin A (entA), and the gene segments encoding the immunoglobulin G binding region and the X region of protein A gene spa. All of the isolates yielded an amplicon with a size of approximately 1,042 bp of the clfA gene. The amplification of the polymorphic spa gene segment encoding the immunoglobulin G binding region was observed in 34 isolates and X-region binding was detected in 26 isolates. Amplification of the coa gene yielded three different products in 20, 10, and 7 isolates. The amplification of the thermonuclease gene, nuc, was observed in 36 out of 37 isolates. All of the samples were negative for the entA gene. The phenotypic and genotypic findings of the present strategies might provide an understanding of the distribution of the prevalent S. aureus clones among bovine mastitis isolates, and might aid in the development of steps to control S. aureus infections in dairy herds.
