      • Voices in the Park

Vol.9 No.2

본 연구는 그림책 작가 앤서니 브라운(Anthony Browne)의 영어 그림책 Voices in the Park을 소개한다. This study attempts to introduce an English picture book Voices in the Park written and illustrated by Anthony Browne, an inspiring contemporary English picture book author. This study also hopes to reveal the key components of Anthony Browne`s works which can be applied in learning and teaching English, although authentic English picture books have rarely been considered in connection with English reading and learning. Browne has shown rather post-modern themes and perspectives centering on powerlessness, alienation, self-esteem, and sympathy from the four characters as a mother, a father, Charles, and Smudge respectively in the Voices in the Park. The readers of this book can engage in an active puzzling of information and feel the empathy to the characters in the book.

Linguistic and Social Adjustment of a Korean Student Returnee

Vol.- No.25

This study investigates how one Korean elementary school child adjusted to a South Korean public school after spending five years abroad in the United States in an English as a Second Language (ESL) situation. It also examines the participant’s individual cultural adjustment to the host country as well as to the home country. Data from the focal child, her mother, father, and sister was collected through interviews that recorded their experiences of two countries that differed linguistically, culturally, and socially. Deprived of familiar support and guidance from peers, returnee students often experience the distress of losing a sense of their past selves. The focal child’s individual narratives also confirm that her sojourn between two countries is not a temporary interruption but a continual negotiation toward understanding various aspects of herself.

Efficient Management of PCM-based Swap Systems with a Small Page Size

2015 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.15 No.5

Due to the recent advances in non-volatile memory technologies such as PCM, a new memory hierarchy of computer systems is expected to appear. In this paper, we explore the performance of PCMbased swap systems and discuss how this system can be managed efficiently. Specifically, we introduce three management techniques. First, we show that the page fault handling time can be reduced by attaching PCM on DIMM slots, thereby eliminating the software stack overhead of block I/O and the context switch time. Second, we show that it is effective to reduce the page size and turn off the read-ahead option under the PCM swap system where the page fault handling time is sufficiently small. Third, we show that the performance is not degraded even with a small DRAM memory under a PCM swap device; this leads to the reduction of DRAM’s energy consumption significantly compared to HDD-based swap systems. We expect that the result of this paper will lead to the transition of the legacy swap system structure of “large memory – slow swap” to a new paradigm of “small memory – fast swap.”

Linguistic and Social Experiences of International Graduate Students in the School of Education at a Midwestern University

Vol.12 No.3

Many students from all over the world (including South Korea) attempt to pursue their higher education in English-speaking countries and the United States in particular since its educationalopportunities enable them to achieve fluency in English as well as acquire prestigious US degrees. Based on this premise, this study, situated at a major Midwestern university with a large international student population, attempts to gain knowledge from international graduate students regarding their expectations and experiences of studying abroad and to make informed recommendations that might help improve the experiences of prospective students. Data was collected through a survey that regarded their experiences of linguistic, cultural, and social adjustments in an American school environment. Survey results showed that students needed the most support in the area of writing, followed by pragmatics, speaking, reading, and listening, respectively. This being the case, individual prospective students should pay more attention to improving their academic writing skills before studying abroad. It is also recommended for international students to participate more in extracurricular programs which encourage interaction and understanding among different cultural and language groups.

Analysis of Memory Access Latency Considering Page Faults and TLB Misses in NVM Storage

2018 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.18 No.1

As high performance NVM storage emerges, memory system configurations optimized for HDD should be revisited. This paper explores the performance of memory systems that use NVM as a storage device and discusses how such systems can be managed efficiently. Specifically, we analyze the memory access time separately for address translation latency and data access latency as the page size, read-ahead, and storage performances are varied. As the page fault cost becomes small under NVM storage, we observe that the bottleneck of memory systems can be shifted to address translation. We show that determining an appropriate page size can improve the address translation latency without increasing data access latency. We also show that turning off the read-ahead option is helpful in reducing data access latency. We expect that our new architecture with appropriate configurations will be helpful in the design of emerging memory systems.

A Working-set Sensitive Page Replacement Policy for PCM-based Swap Systems

2017 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.17 No.1

Due to the recent advances in Phage-Change Memory (PCM) technologies, a new memory hierarchy of computer systems with PCM is expected to appear. In this paper, we present a new page replacement policy that adopts PCM as a high speed swap device. As PCM has limited write endurance, our goal is to minimize the amount of data written to PCM. To do so, we defer the eviction of dirty pages in proportion to their dirtiness. However, excessive preservation of dirty pages in memory may deteriorate the page fault rate, especially when the memory capacity is not enough to accommodate full working-set pages. Thus, our policy monitors the current working-set size of the system, and controls the deferring level of dirty pages not to degrade the system performances. Simulation experiments show that the proposed policy reduces the write traffic to PCM by 160% without performance degradations.

Service Professionalism in Dialogues of Airline Cabin English Textbooks

Vol.72 No.-

The purpose of this study is to suggest the design of improved English dialogues as a remedy for the shortcomings of airline cabin English textbooks. For this purpose, a total of 11 dialogues about problems relating to cabin service were analyzed according to the ‘Five Steps in Customer Complaint Recovery.’ As a result, by applying ‘Step 1 Appreciation,’ the cabin crew in the new dialogues became more positive, viewing passengers’ complaints as an opportunity to improve their service. Next, by adding ‘Step 2 Sympathy,’ the crew became more warm-hearted, showing passengers that the crew sincerely cared about them. Lastly, by utilizing ‘Step 3 Promise,’ ‘Step 4 Information or Suggestion,’ and ‘Step 5 Satisfaction Check,’ the crew became more active, eager to resolve any complaints. In conclusion, this paper proposes that if these results are reflected in the relevant textbooks, then pre- and in-service cabin crew will have the opportunity to improve not only their English abilities but also their service professionalism.
