Cannabis, traditionally used for recreation due to psychoactive compounds in its leaves, flowers, and seeds, has not been thoroughly explored for potential therapeutic benefits. Δ9-trans-Tetrahydrocannabinol, a key cannabinoid in cannabis, causes hallucinogenic effects and delirium symptoms. In contrast, cannabidiol (CBD) does not induce hallucinations and has shown effectiveness in treating symptoms of various rare, incurable diseases. Cannabis exhibits neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, anti-bacterial, analgesic, and antiepileptic properties, recently attracting more attention. This review aims to summarize comprehensively the impact of cannabis on human health, focusing on endocannabinoids and their receptors. It also delves into recent CBD research advancements, highlighting the compound’s potential medical applications. Overall, this paper provides valuable insights into the prospective development of medical cannabis, with a particular emphasis on CBD.

Network analysis of keywords relevant to three fashion trading areas, Garosu-gil, Dongdaemun, and Itaewon in Seoul, Korea, revealed that ‘associated industry’ is an important factor along with ‘design’ and ‘brand’. Additionally, distinct attributes of each commercial district can serve as differentials to attract consumers; thus, they are necessary factors in order to develop as fashion trading areas.
Cdk5 regulates N-cadherin-dependent neuronal migration during cortical development

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) controls neuronal migration in the developing cortex when multipolar newborn neurons transform to become bipolar. However, by which mechanisms Cdk5 controls cell adhesion in migrating neurons are not fully understood. In this study, we examined the functional interaction between Cdk5 and N-cadherin (Ncad) in newborn neurons when they undergo the multipolar to bipolar transition in the intermediate zone (IZ). Detailed expression analysis revealed that both Cdk5 and Ncad were present in GFP-electroporated migrating neurons in the IZ. Misexpression of dominant negative Cdk5 into the embryonic brains stalled neuronal locomotion in the lower IZ in which arrested cells were round or multipolar. When Ncad was co-introduced with Cdk5DN, however, cells continue to migrate into the cortical plate (CP) and migrating neurons acquired typical bipolar morphology with a pia-directed leading process. Similarly, downregulation of CDK5 resulted in lesser aggregation ability, reversed by the expression of Ncad <I>in vitro</I>. Down-regulation of activity or protein level of CDK5 did not alter the total amount of NCAD proteins but lowered its surface expression in cells. Lastly, expression of CDK5 and NCAD overlapped in the IZ of the human fetal cortex, indicating that the role of Cdk5 and Ncad in neuronal migration is evolutionarily conserved.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Reduced Cdk5 activity inhibits the multipolar-bipolar transition of migrating neurons. </LI> <LI> Ncad expression rescues migration defects caused by the reduction of Cdk5 activity. </LI> <LI> Downregulation of Cdk5 impairs the membrane localization of Ncad. </LI> <LI> Cdk5 and Ncad are present in developing mouse and human brains. </LI> </UL> </P>

Safety assessment and functional analysis of probiotic candidates are important for their industrial applications. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum is one of the most widely recognized probiotic strains. In this study we aimed to determine the functional genes of L. plantarum LRCC5310, isolated from kimchi, using next-generation, whole-genome sequencing analysis. Genes were annotated using the Rapid Annotations using Subsystems Technology (RAST) server and the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) pipelines to establish the strain’s probiotic potential. Phylogenetic analysis of L. plantarum LRCC5310 and related strains showed that LRCC5310 belonged to L. plantarum. However, comparative analysis revealed genetic differences between L. plantarum strains. Carbon metabolic pathway analysis based on the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes database showed that L. plantarum LRCC5310 is a homofermentative bacterium. Furthermore, gene annotation results indicated that the L. plantarum LRCC5310 genome encodes an almost complete vitamin B6 biosynthetic pathway. Among five L. plantarum strains, including L. plantarum ATCC 14917T, L. plantarum LRCC5310 detected the highest concentration of pyridoxal 5’-phosphate with 88.08 ± 0.67 nM in MRS broth. These results indicated that L. plantarum LRCC5310 could be used as a functional probiotic for vitamin B6 supplementation.
CARM1 is involved in CYP1A1 gene expression as a transcriptional coactivator

Protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) have been proposed as a transcriptional coactivators in the induction of CYP1A1. In this study, we investigated the change of AhR and CYP1A1 expression by inhibition of CARM1 (also known as PRMT4) to show the involvement of protein arginine methylation in CYP1A1 gene expression. Also, we tested the hypothesis that CARM1 recruitment to the CYP1A1 promoter and subsequent histone arginine methylation are required for the activation of transcription. We found that treatment of HepG2 cells with silencing RNA targeting CARM1 or an arginine methyltransferase inhibitor (AMI-5) significantly decreased the CYP1A1 gene expression level. Furthermore, treatment with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), which increases histone arginine methylation in histone H3R17, also caused increases in CARM1 and H3R17 signals in chromatin immunoprecipitation assays. These results indicate that CARM1 is recruited to the CYP1A1 promoter region as a coactivator, and histone arginine methylation makes XRE (xenobiotic responsive element) regions more accessible for transcription.
