Moon, Sung-Hwan,Kim, Seong-Oh,Yu, Hyung-Seong,Choi, Byung-Jai,Choi, Hyung-Jun,Lee, Jae-Ho 大韓小兒齒科學會 2006 大韓小兒齒科學會誌 Vol.33 No.2
Correlation coefficient는 0.57에서 0.64의 범위였고, standard errors of the estimates 는 여성에서 0.6으로써 남성보다 우수하였다. r^(2)값은 0.27에서 0.41의 범위를 나타내었다. Estimating the size of unerupted teeth is an essential aspect of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning in the mixed dentition. Several methods were introduced and used for the prediction. The most common methods among these would be Moyers probability chart and Tanaka and Johnston equations. These are currently used widely, but they were developed for Caucasians. Because there are clear racial differences in teeth size, the objectives of this study were to produce correlation coefficients between the combined mesiodistal widths of the permanent mandibular incisors and those of the canines and premolars for each quadrant, and prediction tables with regression equations, specifically for Korean. 178 young adults (70 women, 108 men, mean age 21.63 years) were selected from the College of Dentistry, Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea. The mesiodistal crown diameters of the permanent teeth were measured with calipers. Significant sexual dimorphism was found in tooth sizes. The correlation coefficients between the total mesiodistal width of the mandibular permanent incisors and those of the maxillary and mandibular canines and premolars were found to be between 0.52 and 0.64. The standard error of the estimatation was better (0.60) for women and the r^(2) values ranged from 0.27 to 0.41 for both sexes, Prediction tables were prepared for Korean. This study showed larger canine and premolar diameters than Tanaka and Johnston's and Moyers' studies which might be due to the racial differences. Further investigations with a larger sample size will be needed for more representative data on the Korean population.

Single-Electron-Based Flexible Multivalued Exclusive-<small>or</small> Logic Gate
Sang-Jin Kim,Chang-Keun Lee,Rae-Sik Chung,Eun-Sil Park,Seung-Jun Shin,Jung-Bum Choi,Yun-Seop Yu,Nam-Soo Kim,Hyung Gyoo Lee,Keun-Hyung Park IEEE 2009 IEEE transactions on electron devices Vol.56 No.5
<P>By using two symmetrical sidewall gates, we implemented a Si-based single-electron exclusive- OR (XOR) gate and reported on the first flexible multivalued (MV) functionality. A grayscale contour plot of the output voltages displays alternating high/low values as a function of two single-electron transistor (SET) input voltages. Their voltage transfer characteristics display typical XOR or XNOR gate function depending on input voltages for binary, MV, and binary-MV mixed-modes. This flexible two-input XOR gate, combined with the previously reported NAND/NOR gates, provide three basic arithmetic blocks for the SET-based MV logic gate family.</P>
The protease inhibitor, elafin, induces p53-dependent apoptosis in human melanoma cells
Yu, Kyung Sook,Lee, Yangsoon,Kim, Chung Mi,Park, Eui-Chul,Choi, Juhyun,Lim, Dae-Sik,Chung, Young-Hwa,Koh, Sang Seok Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2010 International journal of cancer: Journal internati Vol.127 No.6
<P>Expression of the protease inhibitor elafin is deregulated in several human cancers. However, functions of the protein in cancer are yet to be established. Here, we show that elafin elicits pro-apoptotic effects in melanoma cells but not in normal melanocytes. Elafin triggered the intrinsic apoptotic pathway as evidenced by the increased caspase 9 activity and unaltered caspase 8 activity. Caspase 9-specific siRNA, but not caspase 8-specific siRNA, dramatically abrogated elafin-induced apoptosis. Elevated level of p53 was observed, resulting in increased transcriptional activation and consequent expression of downstream effector molecules (Bax, Puma, Noxa, p21). Moreover, the apoptotic effect of elafin was inhibited by p53-specific siRNA and the p53 inhibitor pifithrin-α. Elafin treatment of xenograft mice of melanoma cells led to significantly smaller tumor sizes compared with those of untreated control mice. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed decreased elafin expression in melanoma tissue specimens. Western blot and reverse transcription analyses indicated transcriptional repression of the elafin gene in melanoma cells. Our results collectively indicate that elafin induces apoptosis in melanoma cells through a p53-dependent intrinsic apoptotic pathway, and that repression of elafin expression in melanoma may contribute to disease progression.</P>
Topological surface plasmon resonance in deep subwavelength structure
Choi Yu Sung,Lee Ki Young,Yoon Jae Woong 한국물리학회 2023 Current Applied Physics Vol.45 No.-
We propose a plasmonic topological junction structure that combines topological robustness and subwavelength localization properties. The proposed structure is a junction of two topologically distinguished metal-insulator-metal waveguide gratings. Assuming Au–SiO2–Au waveguide gratings, we theoretically demonstrate a plasmonic Jackiw-Rebbi-state resonance which has substantially small effective mode-field area in the order of 0.1 μm2 at 1560 nm wavelength and requires only 10 periods for fully sustaining the ideal resonance Q-factor of the infinitely large array. Therefore, our proposed approach provides an efficient scheme for creating various plasmonic leaky-mode resonance components that can take advantages of spectral robustness and strong localization properties.

Background: We evaluated the prevalence of gastroesophageal refi ux diseases (GERD) in noncardiac chest pain (NCCP) patients, risk factors for GERD, and status of prescriptions for GERD in Korean population. Methods: This was a retrospective non-interventional observational nation-wide multicenter (45 centers) study. Patients who had a normal coronary angiogram (CAG) and upper gastroendoscopy within 2 years after CAG were enrolled. The prevalence of GERD among them was examined. Other gastrointestinal diseases including peptic ulcer diseases or gastritis were also examined. We compared the risk factors for GERD between the GERD group and non-GERD group. The ratio of patients who had a medications for gastrointestinal diseases (antacids or proton-pump inhibitor) was also examined. Results: Total of nine hundred four patients were enrolled. The prevalence of GERD among NCCP patients was 436(48. 2%) of 904 patients. Peptic ulcer disease were present in 154 patients, 17. 0%. The prevalence of gastritis was 659(72. 9%) of 904 patients. There was no difference in risk factors for GERD between GERD group and non- GERD group. Medications for GERD and other gastrointestinal diseases were prescribed in 742 patients, 82. 1% of all the NCCP patients. Conclusions: GERD were common (42. 8%) in Korean NCCP patients and most of them (82. 1%) were prescribed for GI medications in Korea. But we could not fi nd any differences in risk factors between GERD and non-GERD groups.
Myriocin induces apoptotic lung cancer cell death via activation of DR4 pathway
Choi, Kyung Eun,Jung, Young Suk,Kim, Dea Hwan,Song, Ju Kyung,Kim, Ji Young,Jung, Yu Yeon,Eum, So Young,Kim, Joo Hwan,Yoon, Na Young,Yoo, Hwan Soo,Han, Sang-Bae,Hong, Jin Tae 대한약학회 2014 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.37 No.4
It has been known that myriocin inhibits melanoma growth. However, the effects and action mechanisms of myriocin on lung cancer cell growth have not been reported. In this study, we examined whether myriocin isolated from Mycelia sterilia inhibits cell growth of lung cancer cells (A549 and NCI-H460) as well as possible signaling pathways involved in cell growth inhibition. Different concentrations of myriocin inhibited the growth of lung cancer cells through the induction of apoptotic cell death. Consistent with cancer cell growth inhibition, myriocin induced the expression of death receptors (DRs) as well as p-JNK and p-p38 in both cell lines. Moreover, the combination of myriocin with DR4 ligand TRAIL, and other well known anti-tumor drugs (docetaxel and cisplatin) synergistically inhibited cancer cell growth, and induced DR4 expression. These results showed that myriocin inhibits lung cancer cells growth through apoptosis via the activation of DR4 pathways, and enhanced anticancer effects with well known drugs. Thus, our study indicates that myriocin could be effective for lung cancer cells as an anti-cancer drug and/or a conjunction agent with well known anti-cancers.
