        Effect of oral spray with Lactobacillus on growth performance, intestinal development and microflora population of ducklings

        Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of oral spray with probiotics on the intestinal development and microflora colonization of hatched ducklings. Methods: In Exp. 1, an one-way factorial design was used to study the antibacterial activity of the probiotics and metabolites on Escherichia coli (E. coli) without antimicrobial resistance. There were four experimental groups including saline as control and Lactobacillus, Bacillus subtilis, combined Lactobacillus and Bacillus subtilis groups. In Exp. 2, 64-day-old ducklings were allotted to 2 treatments with 4 replicated pens. Birds in the control group were fed a basal diet supplemented with Lactobacillus fermentation in the feed whereas birds in the oral spray group were fed the basal diet and administrated Lactobacillus fermentation by oral spray way during the first week. Results: In Exp. 1, the antibacterial activities of probiotics and metabolites on E. coli were determined by the diameter of inhibition zone in order: Lactobacillus>combined Lactobacillus and Bacillus subtilis>Bacillus subtilis. Additionally, compared to E. coli without resistance, E. coli with resistance showed a smaller diameter of inhibition zones. In Exp. 2, compared to control feeding group, oral spray group increased (p<0.05) the final body weight at d 21 and average daily gain for d 1-21 and the absolute weight of the jejunum, ileum and total intestine tract as well as cecum Lactobacillus amount at d 21. Conclusion: Lactobacillus exhibited a lower antibacterial activity on E. coli with resistance than E. coli without resistance. Oral spray with Lactobacillus fermentation during the first week of could improve the intestinal development, morphological structure, and microbial balance to promote growth performance of ducklings from hatch to 21 d of age.

        Genetic architecture of flag leaf length and width in rice (Oryza sativa L.) revealed by association mapping

        Rice flag leaf is the main photosynthetic organ and plays a key role in grain yield. In this study, 106 loci associated with flag leaf length and width were identified using association mapping in a rice mini core collection. Analyzing the phenotypic effects of each allele represented 156 positive and 167 negative alleles, with a few alleles showing inconsistent effect in different environments. Among the 106 loci, 69 were environment-specific loci, 16 were environmentally stable and 21 were environmentally sensitive. Fifteen associated markers were shared by two traits and were designated as pleiotropic markers. According to the frequency distribution of alleles in different variety types, 343 alleles were categorized into three types based on geographic source and usage in breeding. Among these, 156 were used alleles, 138 were unused and 49 were foreign alleles. The results further our understanding of the genetic mechanisms of flag leaf length and width.

        Conserved co-functional network between maize and Arabidopsis aid in the identification of seed defective genes in maize

        Background The biological pathways related to Arabidopsis seed development have been well studied and functional genes involved in it have been discovered. However, functional studies about maize seed development were more limited compared to Arabidopsis. Objective Therefore, transferring knowledge from Arabidopsis into maize would facilitate functional studies about maize seed development. Method In this study, public transcriptome data of the two species related to seed development were obtained. Co-expression network in each species was compared by integrating orthology information. Results This conserved co-functional network contained 4510 maize and 4808 Arabidopsis genes, respectively. Most of these genes were expressed in throughout embryo, early or later endosperm/seed. These conserved co-functional genes were signifcantly enriched for members of PPR protein family, which was consistent with that PPR proteins play an important role in maize seed development. Spatial-temporally co-functional genes were discovered in the seed coat and embryo. Furthermore, 66 well-studied genes involved in Arabidopsis seed development were co-functional with 319 maize genes and one maize gene (GRMZM2G036050) was further confrmed using an EMS-induced seed defective mutant by bulked segregating RNA sequencing (BSR) analysis. Conclusions Altogether, these results showed the potential of this approach to support functional studies in maize seed development by transferring knowledge from Arabidopsis.
