In this study, we address applications of the POD(Proper Orthogonal Decomposition) method to turbulent flows. In particular, we apply the method to a one-dimensional shallow water problem and a two-dimensional rectangular flow. We obtained coherent structures of each flow field and discussed their contribution to the understanding of complex flows such as turbulence.

Numerical study on the improvement of mixing effect in a microchannel with multi blocks has been performed. the microchannel is simulated three-dimensionally using a commercial fluid analysis code, FLUENT 6.0 Geometric factors of blocks in the channel is a key factor. Further study is required to investigate mixing effect of the microchannel with various shapes.

In this study, spin-up flows in a shallow rectangular container are analysed by using three-dimensional computation. We compared our results with those obtained by quasi three-dimensional computation. Our results show that quasi 3-D solution is not accurate enough and it provides far less damped solution.

This paper treats the Reynolds No.30 flow of the viscous fluid passing the two cylinders placed laterally. The Xavier-Stokes equation is solved using upwind finite difference method. Stream function on the cylinder is set constant, say unity, while free flow boundary values are varied. The stream function and vorticity function are calculated and graphed, after which four stagnation points are located and shown on this paper. Followings are calculated from these results. 1) The wake flow pattern is much different from that of a single cylinder and forms like the letter "Z". 2) The amount of flow rate passing between the two cylinders is decreased about 3% from that of potential flow. 3) The front stagnation point becomes nearer to the mid point of cylinder, while the rear under stagnation point gets down from the rear mid point, as. time increases.

EGR system reduces the NOx as the mixed gas included in the recirculated exhaust gas decreases combustion temperature. The temperature of recirculated exhaust gas is controlled with the EGR cooler in the EGR system. In this study, we studied cooling effect of the EGR cooler with different a cross-section shapes of tubes and the number of tubes. The results show that the cross-section shapes of tubes and the number of tubes slightly influence the temperature drop of the recirculated exhaust gas.

Analysis of two-dimension unsteady flows with a free surface in a rectangular container subject to a linear reciprocation force was preformed by numerical and experimental methods. FVM was used for the numerical computation of the two-dimensional flows. We consider the surface tension as well as the viscous/elastic properties of the free surface. The steady recirculatory flow is visualized by a laser sheet, and the free-surface flow is analysed by a PIV method. It is shown that the free-surface properties affect the inner steady flow significantly.

Natural convection heat transfer from the corner between a vertical flat plate and adiabatic wall has been studied for various inclination angles of the adiabatic wall and Rayleigh numbers by using Mach-Zehnder interferometer in air. Natural convection heat transfer is increased with increasing the inclination angle of the adiabatic wall. The local Nusselt number is increased to x/L=1/18 and then decreased at θ=30° And 60°, but decreased at θ=90°, 120°, 150° And 180° as the dimensionless plate length increases. The mean Nusselt number at θ=30° Shows minimum and at θ=180° Maximum for constant Rayleigh numbers.

We present numerical and experimental results of the periodic flows inside a rectangular container under a background rotation. In numerical computation, a parallel-computation technique with MPI is implemented. Flow visualization and PIV measurement are also performed to obtain velocity fields at the free surface. Through a series of numerical and experimental works, we aim to clarify the fundamental reasons of discrepancy between the two-dimensional computation and the experimental measurement, which was detected in the previous study for the same flow model. Specifically, we check if the various assumptions prerequisite for the validity of the classical Ekman pumping law are satisfied for periodic flows under a background rotation.

In this paper, we propose a new PIV methodology for obtaining a velocity field from a sequence of multiple image data based on a least-square principle (also known as MQD; minimum quadratic difference) for the grey level difference between two neighboring frames of image data. We investigated both the accuracy of the result and the time consumption in the computation. It turns out that the proposed method is not only accurate but fast compared with the conventional correlation PIV techniques. Our method is applied to the spin-up flows and the results show that the method can be a good substitution for the conventional algorithms employed in the existing commercial codes.
