      • Telomere-Mitochondrion Links Contribute to Induction of Senescence in MCF-7 Cells after Carbon-Ion Irradiation

        The effects of carbon-ion irradiation on cancer cell telomere function have not been comprehensively studied. In our previous report cancer cells with telomere dysfunction were more sensitive to carbon-ion irradiation, but the underlying mechanisms remained unclear. Here we found that telomerase activity was suppressed by carbon-ion irradiation via hTERT down-regulation. Inhibition of telomere activity by MST-312 further increased cancer cell radiosensitivity to carbon-ion radiation. hTERT suppression caused by either carbon-ion irradiation or MST-312 impaired mitochondrial function, as indicated by decreased membrane potential, mtDNA copy number, mitochondrial mass, total ATP levels and elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS). PGC-$1{\alpha}$ expression was repressed after carbion-ion irradiation, and hTERT inhibition by MST-312 could further exacerbate this effect. Lowering the mitochondrial ROS level by MitoTEMPO could partially counteract the induction of cellular senescence induced by carbon-ion radiation and MST-312 incubation. Taken together, the current data suggest that telomere-mitochondrion links play a role in the induction of senescence in MCF-7 cells after carbon-ion irradiation.

        Organic geochemistry and hydrocarbon potential of source rocks from the Mohe Formation of the Upper Jurassic in the Mohe Basin, northeast China

        The Mohe Formation is one of the important source rocks for oil-gas and gas hydrates in the Mohe Basin. In this paper, mudstone from cores of the M-1 and M-3 wells and argillite from cores of the MK-2 well of the Mohe Basin were studied. The depositional environment, organic matter source, thermal maturity, kerogen type, and hydrocarbon generation potential of the core samples were determined using organic and inorganic geochemistry. The dual sources of organic matter were terrestrial plants and aquatic organisms. The organic matter was deposited in a reducing lacustrine environment. The lake water salinity was higher when argillite was deposited. The late stage of the sedimentary filling of the lacustrine basin was characterized by high sulfate contents. The source rocks primarily contained Type II2–III kerogen. The present-day thermal maturity parameters reveal that the organic matter of the Mohe Formation is mature to overmature, indicating that this unit is capable of generating gas condensate and dry gas. In addition, we compared the organic geochemistry characteristics of mudstone and argillite. The results indicate that TOC, S1 + S2, and HI are lower in argillite than in mudstone. Although the biomarker maturity parameters cannot reflect the thermal evolution of the source rocks, they reflect the source of the organic matter and the depositional environment. The results provide important constraints for the evaluation of the hydrocarbon potential of lacustrine source rocks of the Mohe Formation from the Upper Jurassic and for the location of petroleum resources in the Mohe Basin.

      • Can Ultrasound be Used to Differentiate Tubular Adenomas of Breast from Fibroadenomas or Carcinoma?

        Breast tubular adenomas are rare benign breast tumors and detailed descriptions of their sonographic appearance are necessary for differential diagnosis from fibroadenomas or breast cancers. This study investigated twenty-one histology-proved tubular adenomas in 17 patients and also included 48 fibroadenomas in 35 patients as a control group. There was no significant difference between the two groups with clinical presentation, which was age, tumor location, tumor number (p>0.05). Statistic analysis showed three significant factors in the differential diagnosis of tubular adenomas and fibroadenomas, including macro-lobulation (p=0.01), "tiny branch like" patterns (p=0.001) and vascularity (p=0.02). Other ultrasonographic features such as echogenicity, border, uniformity of echotexture, posterior acoustic enhancement, lateral wall shadowing were of no clinical significance (p>0.05). Calcifications were seen in three tubular adenomas which were different from those of carcinomas. Although tubular adenomas have some typical characteristics on sonography, surgery and core needle biopsy are still needed for complex cases to exclude progress to malignancy.

        Influence of non-Gaussian characteristics of wind load on fatigue damage of wind turbine

        Based on translation models, both Gaussian and non-Gaussian wind fields are generated using spectral representation method for investigating the influence of non-Gaussian characteristics and directivity effect of wind load on fatigue damage of wind turbine. Using the blade aerodynamic model and multi-body dynamics, dynamic responses are calculated. Using linear damage accumulation theory and linear crack propagation theory, crack initiation life and crack propagation life are discussed with consideration of the joint probability density distribution of the wind direction and mean wind speed in detail. The result shows that non-Gaussian characteristics of wind load have less influence on fatigue life of wind turbine in the area with smaller annual mean wind speeds. Whereas, the influence becomes significant with the increase of the annual mean wind speed. When the annual mean wind speeds are 7 m/s and 9 m/s at hub height of 90 m, the crack initiation lives under softening non-Gaussian wind decrease by 10% compared with Gaussian wind fields or at higher hub height. The study indicates that the consideration of the influence of softening non-Gaussian characteristics of wind inflows can significantly decrease the fatigue life, and, if neglected, it can result in non-conservative fatigue life estimates for the areas with higher annual mean wind speeds.

        Ultrasonic-Microwave Synergistic Synthesis of RGO–Bi2WO6 Photocatalyst with High Photoactivity for Basic Nitrogen Compounds in Light Oil

        Graphene–Bi2WO6 composite photocatalyst with excellent photocatalytic properties were synthetized by ultrasonic-microwave synergistic method. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier infrared (FT-IR) spectrum, specific surface area analyzer (BET) and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra. The photocatalytic activities of as-prepared samples were evaluated by degradation of pyridine in light oil under visible light irradiation. The results show that graphene changed appearance structure of Bi2WO6, which prevented the Bi2WO6 nanosheets reunion arrangement, and increased specific surface area of the catalyst. It can also reduce the recombination probability of photogenerated carrier, so as to improve the photocatalytic activity of the composite catalyst. The optimal amount of graphene is 2%, with the denitrification rate as high as 89.28%, much higher than that of pure Bi2WO6.

        Energy-saving Cooling Coated Fabric with Robust Solar Reflection and Water Repellent Properties

        With the global climate changing, people are more aware of energy consumption and are interested in energysavingproducts or materials. One way to reduce energy consumption to improve personal thermal management efficiency isurgently needed. Therefore, we provide an alternative energy-saving method that will improve fabrics’ thermal managementby blocking infrared heat and ultraviolet light from solar radiation. A phase-inversion technique was developed to preparepoly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) micro-size and nano-size composite pore structure which canblock out the sun and be coated on fabric material. Meanwhile, by adding hydrophobic SiO2 aerogel particles (SA) to thesystem, the surface of coating became superhydrophobic, it improved waterproof and moisture-permeable properties offabric which are important for wearing or using pleasantly. It can be used for any outdoor application such as tents, clothing,or some indoor use as well.

        Azo-based small molecular hypoxia responsive theranostic for tumor-specific imaging and therapy

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We report herein, an azo-derivative (<B>AzP1</B>) of FDA approved antineoplastic drug SN-38 (irinotecan analogue) as a theranostic agent with a potential for both tumor hypoxia-specific activation and therapy. The theranostic <B>AzP1</B> was found to be stable within a biologically relevant pH scale and was chemically inert towards other competitive biological analytes. However, upon treatment with rat-liver microsomes, <B>AzP1</B> showed a self-calibrated fluorescence enhancement at λ<SUB>em</SUB> = 560 nm. The cytotoxicity profile of <B>AzP1</B> was tested in various cancer lines. Under hypoxic conditions, prodrug <B>AzP1</B> exhibited activation to release the parent drug (SN-38) and enhanced cytotoxicity in cancer cells with concomitant fluorescence enhancement at 560 nm, which served to monitor both the drug activation and tracing purposes. The therapeutic potential of <B>AzP1</B> for both tumor-specific activation and suppression of tumor weights was validated in xenograft mouse model. Collectively, the synthetic ease and hypoxia-sensitive activation along with promising therapeutic properties highlight the potential of theranostic <B>AzPI</B> in future cancer treatment programs.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        The Correlation between the Injury Patterns of the Medial Patellofemoral Ligament in an Acute First-Time Lateral Patellar Dislocation on MR Imaging and the Incidence of a Second-Time Lateral Patellar Dislocation

        Objective: To evaluate the correlation between the injury patterns of the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) on magnetic resonance imaging in an acute first-time lateral patellar dislocation (LPD) and incidence of a second-time LPD. Materials and Methods: Magnetic resonance images were prospectively analyzed in 147 patients after an acute first-time LPD with identical nonoperative management. The injury patterns of MPFL in acute first-time LPDs were grouped by location and severity for the analysis of the incidence of second-time LPD in a 5-year follow-up. Independent t tests, chi-square tests and Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed as appropriate. Results: Forty-six cases (46/147, 31.3%) of second-time LPD were present at the 5-year follow-up. Fourteen (14/62, 22.6%) and 31 cases (31/80, 38.8%) were present in the partial and complete MPFL tear subgroups, respectively. Twenty-five cases (25/65, 38.5%), 11 cases (11/26, 42.3%), and 8 cases (8/47, 17%) were present in the isolated femoral-side MPFL tear (FEM), combined MPFL tear (COM), and isolated patellar-side MPFL tear (PAT) subgroups, respectively. Compared with the partial MPFL tears, complete tears showed higher incidence of a second-time LPD (p = 0.04). The time interval between the two LPDs was shorter in the complete MPFL tear subgroup (24.2 months) than in the partial tear subgroup (36.9 months, p = 0.001). Compared with the PAT subgroup, the FEM and COM subgroups showed a higher incidence of a second-time LPD (p = 0.025). The time intervals between the two LPDs were shorter in the FEM and COM subgroups (20.8 months and 19.2 months) than in the PAT subgroup (32.5 months, p = 0.049). Conclusion: A complete MPFL tear, isolated femoral-side tear and combined tear in a first-time LPD predispose a second-time LPD.

      • Elevated Expression of Nuclear Protein Kinase CK2α as a Poor Prognosis Indicator in Lymph Node Cancerous Metastases of Human Thyroid Cancers

        Aim: To investigate the expression of protein kinase $CK2{\alpha}$ ($CK2{\alpha}$) in human thyroid disease and its relationship with thyroid cancer metastasis. Materials and Methods: Using immunohistochemistry we measured the expression of $CK2{\alpha}$ in 76 benign and malignant human thyroid cancer tissues, including 10 pairs of papillary carcinoma tissues with or without lymph node cancerous metastasis and similarly 10 pairs of lymph nodes. Results: The expression of $CK2{\alpha}$ was found to be higher in thyroid carcinoma cases (papillary carcinoma, follicular carcinoma, anaplastic carcinoma and medullary carcinoma) than in ones such as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, nodular goiter and adenoma. These findings were also confirmed by RT-PCR and Western blotting. More strikingly, elevated expression of $CK2{\alpha}$ in thyroid papillary carcinoma tissues was not only significantly associated with lymph node cancerous metastasis and clinical stage of thyroid cancers; but also correlated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and high tenascin C (TNC) expression. In addition, EMT and high TNC expression in thyroid carcinoma tissues was significantly associated with lymph node cancerous metastasis. Conclusions: Elevated expression of nuclear $CK2{\alpha}$ is a poor prognosis indicator in lymph node cancerous metastasis of human thyroid cancers.

        Relationships of Low Serum Levels of Interleukin-10 With Poststroke Anxiety and Cognitive Impairment in Patients With Clinical Acute Stroke

        Background and Purpose The relationships among interleukin (IL)-10 levels, anxiety, and cognitive status after stroke remain controversial. We aimed to determine the associations of serum IL-10 levels with poststroke anxiety (PSA) and poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI). Methods We recruited 350 patients with stroke, of whom only 151 completed a 1-month follow- up assessment. The Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) were used to assess the cognitive status and anxiety, respectively. Serum IL-10 levels were measured within 24 hours of admission. Results IL-10 levels were significantly lower in the PSA group than in the non-PSA group, and they were negatively associated with HAMA scores (r=-0.371, p<0.001). After adjusting for all potential confounders, IL-10 levels remained an independent predictor of PSA (odds ratio=0.471, 95% confidence interval=0.237–0.936, p=0.032). IL-10 levels were strongly correlated with behavior during interviews, psychic anxiety, and somatic anxiety. Patients without PSCI had higher IL-10 levels were higher in non-PSCI patients than in PSCI patients, and they were positively associated with MMSE scores in the bivariate correlation analysis (r=0.169, p=0.038), and also with memory capacity, naming ability, and copying capacity. However, IL-10 did not predict PSCI in the univariable or multivariable logistic regression. Conclusions Low IL-10 levels were associated with increased risks of PSA and PSCI at a 1-month follow-up after stroke. Serum IL-10 levels may therefore be helpful in predicting PSA.
