        Short term effects by acupuncture to SP3 on the autonomic blood flow control.

        <P>OBJECTIVES: In this study, we investigated the short term effects of acupuncture on autonomic control of blood flow in healthy subjects. We also studied whether deqi (obtaining qi) sensations are correlated with these autonomic hemodynamic changes. METHODS: The experiment had a randomized, crossover design. Five healthy volunteers (age: 18-26 years) participated in this study. Acupuncture (2 Hz rotations for 10 seconds to 20 mm deep) was applied either to the acupuncture point SP3 or KI2 for 5 minutes. Non-invasively obtained continuous hemodynamic measurements of ultrasound Dopplerography were recorded at the radial artery before, during and after acupuncture stimulation. Cardiovascular autonomic tone was also recorded using power spectral analysis of heart rate variability. After acupuncture stimulation, the participants completed the acupuncture perception scales to measure the degree of deqi or pain they had experienced. RESULTS: Acupuncture stimulation to the acupuncture point SP3, when compared to the acupuncture point KI2, decreased the maximum systolic velocity. It also decreased low frequency component and increased high frequency component of heart rate variability, indicating that the decrease in systolic blood flow velocity was due to the increased parasympathetic response. Interestingly, warm, radiating and energetic feeling, which are related to deqi, had close correlations with the decrease in blood flow velocity. DISCUSSION: Acupuncture stimulation to the acupuncture point SP3 modulates the autonomic cardiovascular responses by enhancing parasympathetic function, and this may help to understand the therapeutic effects of acupuncture.</P>

      • The Study of Environment Monitoring System for Closed Taiwan Country Chicken House

        This paper presents an environmental monitoring system for closed Taiwan country chicken houses. The system measures various environmental parameters through sensors, uses LoRa (a long-range low-power wide area network) to record changes in these parameters, tracks the age of chickens, and comprehensively analyzes the rearing of chickens within a given period. During rearing, chickens are prone to illness and heat stress. It accessed measurement values through SHH Sensor v 2.0 and used LoRa to send the data to the base station, from which the data were uploaded onto a MySQL database. Test 1 showed that the temperature in the chicken house where the study was conducted remained fairly constant, regardless of weather conditions. However, the lowest temperature was 25.4°C during the incubation period (i.e., within 2 weeks of hatching). Test 2 showed that the chickens gained less weight on a few days during the rearing period: 27.79 g on 2 December (i.e., 44 days old), 20.46 g on 13 December (i.e., 54 days old), and 28.85 g on 14 December (i.e., 55 days old). By analyzing changes in the environmental parameters, the monitoring system contributes to the formulation of precautionary measures against the factors that negatively affect chicken rearing and approaches to preventing chickens from becoming sick, thus improving chicken quality. Moreover, it can be combined with a control system to facilitate the development of environmental control measures tailored to chickens of different ages.

        Electroencephalogram changes according to the subjective acupuncture sensation.

        <P>OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate electroencephalogram changes, the electrical activity measured on the scalp, in relation to the items of acupuncture sensation questionnaire, based on real-life patients' experiences during acupuncture. METHODS: Using a 32 channel digital electroencephalogram system, healthy volunteers (n=10) received electroencephalogram examinations over four consecutive periods: (1) baseline; (2 and 3) acupuncture needle retention only or needle retention plus manipulation in random order; (4) aftermath. Alpha, beta and theta band power of electroencephalogram acquired in 30 electrodes were analysed in relation to the higher or lower subjective rating of acupuncture sensation questionnaire categories: the needle insertion, manipulation and retention related items. RESULTS: The group with higher ratings of needle retention related questionnaire items showed significant changes in alpha band electroencephalogram powers over the periods before, during and after the needle retention, while the group with lower ratings did not. When analysed without grouping based on higher or lower acupuncture sensation questionnaire ratings, electroencephalogram band powers did not show significant difference among four periods of acupuncture stimulation except for two electrodes of alpha band and two electrodes of theta band. DISCUSSION: These results indicate that acupuncture may directly affect electroencephalogram activity and this connection may be reflected in the subjective questionnaire items, related to the traditional notion of deqi (obtaining qi).</P>

      • Fabrication and Performance of X-ray tube with CNT based Electron Beam (C-beam)

        Modern x-ray imaging techniques require more finer resolution and dose reduction for early diagnosis of diseases and safety regulation respectively. Currently available x-ray sources are based on thermionic electron emitters which emit electron when they are heated over 2000 K. Therefore, the emitters are susceptible to oxidation and it degrades x-ray tube lifespan. In addition, the emitted electron beam has wide beam divergence hence, additional electrodes are required to focus the beam on anode target. Besides fast switching of x-ray radiation from thermionic emitters is impossible due to its inherent electron emission mechanism. Field emission phenomena and the principles are intensively studied due to the its extraordinary electrical properties. Among them, vertically align carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) are prominent cold cathode candidates owing to their ballast electron transport characteristics and free-standing structure which is easy to maximize electric field strength to the emitters. The authors report on triode configuration e-beam module fabrication process and their electrical characteristics for the purpose of x-ray tube applications. Furthermore, a reflection type of glass sealed x-ray tube also fabricated with our c-beam module. The tube properties such as 1-V curves, dose rate and focal spot size were evaluated and compared to that of conventional thermionic one. The authors believe that our cold cathode employed x-ray tubes are viable for high resolution medical imaging and dose reduction thanks to their narrow beam divergence and capability of instantaneous switching respectively.

        Growth of Vertically Aligned CNTs with Ultra Thin Ni Catalysts

        We report on the growth mechanism of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) using ultra thin Ni catalysts and direct current plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system. The CNTs were grown with -600 V bias to substrate electrode and catalyst thickness variation of 0.07 nm to 3 nm. The CNT density was reduced with catalyst thickness reduction and increased growth time. Cone like CNTs were grown with ultra thin Ni thickness, and it results from an etch of carbon network by reactive etchant species and continuous carbon precipitation on CNT walls. Vertically aligned sparse CNTs can be grown with ultra thin Ni catalyst.

        Model predictive control of nine-switch converter with output filter for independent control of two loads

        This paper proposes a model predictive control (MPC) algorithm designed for nine-switch converter with output filter (NSCOF) to control two three-phase AC loads independently. A state function of each leg of nine-switch converter (NSC) is established to characterize the internal conditions of the NSC because the traditional model of the NSCOF does not involve the interior model of the NSC. Based on the NSCOF model with the state function of each leg, a prediction model of NSCOF is constructed. The two AC terminals of NSCOF are treated as one module when the MPC is designed. The proposed MPC achieves controlling two three-phase AC loads working under different frequency modes. Furthermore, this algorithm is independent of the modulation method for reducing the difficulty of the controller design and its limits. The simulation and experimental results reveal that the steady-state and dynamic response performance of NSCOF are substantially improved using MPC.

        Novel arylhydrazone derivatives bearing a rhodanine moiety: synthesis and evaluation of their antibacterial activities

        A series of arylhydrazone derivatives bearing arhodanine moiety have been synthesized, characterized, andevaluated as antibacterial agents. Some of these compoundsshowed potent antibacterial activities against several differentstrains of Gram-positive bacteria, including multidrug-resistant clinical isolates. Of the compounds tested, IIkand IIIk were identified as the most effective, with minimuminhibitory concentration values of 2–4 lg/mL against multidrug-resistant Gram-positive organisms, including methicillin-resistant and quinolone-resistant Staphylococcusaureus. None of the compounds exhibited any activityagainst the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli 1356 at64 lg/mL.

        For the promotion of community development, the first step is to investigate the specialty resources and human resources, to understand the process and the current appearance of community development, and to explore the future development vision or direction should be promoted. Secondly, the local smart people must have the abilities of cooperation, communication, cross-domain integration, and linking external support. It is one of the keypoints of adding-value workforce. Therefore, leaders of a community must find the local characteristics of the championship, and have the capacity to promote citizen participation and to integrate external support and cooperation, so that communities can acquire and integrate diverse and sufficient resources in order to succeed in community sustainability. Therefore, the main purpose of this paper is to establish a model of resource inventory and integration. Through the methods of literature analysis and focus group discussion, this paper explores the community cases of Guantu area in Taipei, Shennong Street and Jingliao community in Tainan how to inventory both natural and human resources, to seek community development and value-added directions, to promote civic participation, cooperation, and to link external groups, so as to achieve the success of internal and external resource integration.
