        The Effects of Activities and Working Conditions on Fire Accidents on Construction Sites

        Accidents on construction sites involving fires do not occur as often as accidents involving falls from height or collapses. However, once a fire accident occurs, there is a high risk of a large number of casualties. Fire on construction sites is affected by working conditions and the types of activities the construction workers are engaged in at the sites. This study aims to identify activities and working conditions at construction sites that are vulnerable to fire, and analyse how they correlate with each other and how they affect the causes and consequences of fire accidents at construction sties. I analysed 40 fire accident reports and listed the situations vulnerable to fire at construction sites considering direct causes, activities, and working conditions. The most dangerous combination of fire hazards can be the heating devices used during rest/sleep in the office/cabin/storage during cold weather. The next most hazardous combination can be sparks arising from painting, waterproofing, insulation, plumbing, or welding/melting work in an underground or confined space.

      • Modelling of On-Site Energy Consumption Profile in Construction Sites and a Case Study of Earth Moving

        The annual expenditure on diesel oil and heavy oil in the construction sector is the second largest among all industrial sectors. According to the greenhouse reduction scheme of Korean Government, construction sector targeted 7.1% reduction by 2020. Although this target is not higher than other industrial sectors, it is not easy to achieve the reduction target without radical advance in technology, which cannot be expected to happen soon, considering the conservative characteristics of construction industry. Most researches on environmental issues focus on the issues related to energy saving matters during material production stage or maintenance stage, such as heating and insulation, and few deal with the issues directly related to the energy use in the construction sites. This research regards the operation of equipment for the on-site construction processes as a system and attempts to model the energy use processes related to the activities in construction sites, and provides simulation results of earth excavation and hauling processes. The result of this research is expected to aid construction planners estimating the time-based patterns of energy use and assessing greenhouse gas emission and to help selecting more energy efficient alternatives at the planning stage.

        Activity Creating Method for Multi-Unit Projects

        The typical Critical Path Method (CPM) leaves it to the construction managers to overcome two problems in developing networks. First, the construction manager needs to prepare information on the type of activities and their precedence relations in order to develop a network schedule. Second, he or she can include space information into the network schedule such as the locations where the activities take place, only with difficulty. These two problems make it difficult for an inexperienced person to create a network. The purpose of this paper is to provide construction managers with set equations of creating a network schedule for multiunit projects. A space-resource combined network creation are presented in this paper, which includes equations for generating a list of required activities, their precedence relations, and information on their location. Information on the space (location) and the resource is the required data for this method. Based on this information, this method divides a project into a number of activities so that each activity contains the information on the location where the activity takes place and the principal resource required for that activity. Precedence relations are then obtained from the sequence of space and resource. This method has the potential to reduce human efforts in scheduling activities.

        Modelling the Estimation Process of Greenhouse Gas Emission in the Construction of Buildings

        The annual expenditure on diesel oil and heavy oil in the construction sector is the second largest among all industrial sectors. To meet the government's greenhouse gas reduction targets, the construction sector has until 2020 to cut its emissions by 7.1%. Unlike other high-tech industrial sectors, the construction sector has a fairly limited scope for technological improvements, which hampers its capacity to achieve the reduction target. To reduce emissions, it is necessary to establish an energy and emissions strategy at the project planning stage, and energy use and the resulting emissions must be estimated. This research aims to establish an estimation methodology for greenhouse gas emissions at the planning stage of construction projects. To estimate the project-related emissions, this research indentified the relationship among the types of emissions in a cross-sectional matrix form, and then provided a set of calculation methods for total project related emissions.

        The Impact of Building Types on Fire Damage by Month

        Statistics show that while the number of fires has decreased over the last decade, losses of human life and economic property due to fire have increased. Moreover, the number of large-scale fires that have occurred in recent years has resulted in heightened public anxiety. This study aims to identify a specific period of the year most vulnerable to fire, and fire trends, such as damage of fire to humans, to the economy, and different building types. For this purpose, we analyzed human and economic damages using statistics related to fire from 2007 to 2017 and provided a monthly distribution of fire damages both to humans and to the economy by building type. We also identified the relationship between the human damage and the economy damage, and compared the economic losses per casualty by building type. The human damage in residential buildings occupied the highest portion, whereas the economic damage of industrial buildings represented more than a half of all economic damage due to fire. The economic damage per casualty was shown highest for industrial buildings and has also increased rapidly in recent years.

      • Fatal accident in Korean Construction Industry in Comparisons with the UK Figures

        In spite of the rapid economic growth in Korea, safety cultures in construction industry have not much improved during last ten years. When it is compared to other developed countries of safety, accident rate of Korean construction sites shows bleak figures. This study compares the safety figures of Korea with the UK figures in order to find out what is needed for the safety of the construction sites in Korea. By comparing occupations, age groups, kind of accident, and agent, this study found several differences and similarities, and derived the directions for better safety management.

        Exploring the Triangular Relationship: Occupational Diseases, Work-Related Illness, and Accidents in the Construction Sector

        This research delves into the evolving interplay between occupational diseases, work-related illnesses, and accidents in the construction industry, focusing on the past twenty years. One significant discovery is the 19-fold escalation in reported occupational diseases, prompting an examination of their root causes and connections to workplace environments. Frequently encountered work-related ailments include physically strenuous tasks, low back pain, and cerebrovascular issues, highlighting the need for robust prevention and management approaches. Predominantly, noise-induced hearing loss and pneumoconiosis are the most common occupational diseases. The study unveils notable correlations between specific work-related illnesses and accidents, indicating the necessity for bespoke safety measures. Additionally, a pronounced association between work-related illnesses and occupational diseases offers insights into underlying risk factors. Remarkably, the findings propose a bidirectional link between occupational diseases and accidents, challenging traditional beliefs about causality. These insights are pivotal for enhancing safety protocols, focusing on preventive measures, and foreseeing occupational diseases that may arise following accidents in the construction industry

        災害危險度와 工程의 連繫에 의한 安全管理 事前計劃 모델

        While numerous proactive planning techniques are being used in scheduling, sagety management tends to be reactive in construction process. In addition, safety requirements are often considered as one of the targets of curtail for the purpose of scheduling efficiency. This paper develops a proactive safety planning method that integrates hazard risk and work schedule in order to estamate possible hazards in the scheduling phase. This method incorporates statistical information of construction accidents into each activity of PERT/CPM charts and Gantt charts, using probability theories and mathematical matix operations. An implementation is presented for a prototypical network schedule to verify the validity of the approach taken in this paper. The results of this paper are expected to contribute to the harmonious management of schedule and safety, which eventually leads to reduce human tragedies and loss of properties.
