Backgrounds Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the most persistent environmental toxicants, which can be found in every part of the environment. The PAHs are known to induce cancer, malformation, and mutation in various kinds of biological organisms, including humans. However, only limited toxic effects of PAHs in seaweeds have been accumulated so far. Objectives Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) against PAHs exposure were isolated using Ecava cDNA microarray and their biological functions were considered to anticipate the toxic effects of PAHs in Ecklonia cava . Results Gene ontology (GO) analysis of DEGs showed that PAHs exposure affected several processes, namely cellular protein metabolic, macromolecule biosynthetic, nucleic acid metabolic, carbohydrate derivative biosynthetic, glycoprotein metabolic processes, photosynthesis, and finally oxidoreductase activity in kelp species. Functional analysis of the most frequently observed DEGs in each of the 24-h and 48-h experimental groups revealed that PAHs appeared to induce stress and defense responses, as well as interfere with Wnt signaling pathways and biological molecule metabolism in E. cava . Conclusion This study demonstrated the discovery of DEGs in E. cava that may be impacted by environmental PAHs, as well as predicted how the transcript levels would affect physiology and metabolism. Such results will contribute to a better understanding of how seaweed reacts to pollution.

<P>We report the fabrication of 3D polymer objects that contain electrical components interconnected by conductive silver/carbon nanotube inks printed conformally onto their surfaces and through vertical vias. Electrical components are placed within internal cavities and recessed surfaces of polymer objects produced by stereolithography. Conformally printed electrodes that interconnect each electrical component exhibit a conductivity of ∼2 × 104 S cm−1 upon annealing at temperatures below 100 °C. Multiple 3D objects were created to demonstrate this hybrid additive manufacturing approach, including those with an embedded circuit operated by an air-suspended switch and a 3D circuit board composed of microcontroller unit, resistor, battery, light-emitting diode and sensor.</P>

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of upper extremity volume, pain, and range of motion after participation in thera-band exercises according to the hand grip type in patients with breast cancer with upper extremity edema. We also aimed to determine the most efficient type of grip. Methods : The subjects were 10 female patients diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer who had stage 2 lymphedema. Randomly, 5 patients each were allocated to the experimental and control groups. For six weeks, the patients in both the experimental and control groups exercised daily. In both groups, manual lymph drainage was applied for 1 hour. Afterward, patients in the experimental group placed their hands in the thera-band ring and exercised with their fingers outstretched. Patients in the control group exercised while holding the thera-band ring with a finger. Both the experimental group and the control group underwent measurements of the circumference of the upper extremity, pain, and range of motion of the shoulder joint at weeks 1, 2, 4, and 6 before and after exercise. Results : The upper arm circumference decreased by more in the experimental group in all weeks than before than that in the control group, and there was a statistically significant difference at 6 weeks. Compared with the difference between pre-exercise and 6 weeks post-exercise, the change in pain significantly decreased in the experimental group and showed a statistically significant difference. The shoulder range of motion increased in extension, external rotation, and internal rotation compared with that in the control group, and there was a statistically significant difference. Although the operating range increased in flexion and abduction, there were no statistically significant differences. Conclusion : In this study, we found that thera-band exercises with an open-hand grip are more efficient than thera-band exercises with a closed-hand grip in edema reduction, pain, and range of motion. In addition, it was found that it was more effective to continue the thera-band exercises with open-hand grip extended for at least 6 weeks rather than for a short time.

The legume family is the third largest group, including approximately 650 genera and 18,000 species, in the flowering plants and the second important crops to the Poaceae in the agricultural economy. Comparative analysis is a useful tool to understand cross-species genomic structure and alterations during organism’s evolutionary history. In this study, we constructed a composite comparative map of ten legume species, including Medicago truncatula, Medicago sativa, Lens culinaris, Pisum sativum, Lotus japonicus, Cicer arietinum, Vicia faba L, Vigna radiata, Phaseolus vulgaris and Glycine max. Of these species, M. truncatula, which is a representative model system, played a central role to develop the cross-genome amplifiable PCR gene markers for the purpose of transferring them to other related legume species. A total of 140 cross-species core markers were employed to analyze genomic colinearity across this broad array of legume species. The comparative map demonstrates a diverse array of evolutionary events, such as duplications, inversions and reciprocal translocations. It is anticipated that resulting maps would provide a broader insights into the lineage-specific genomic organization of these glalegoid/phaseoloid legumes, which are two clades containing almost all crop legumes of economic importance, and can further used for the molecular breeding through translating genomic information into other orphan legumes.

Susceptible Vitis vinifera responds to Xylella infection with a massive redirection of gene transcription. This transcriptional response is characterized by increased transcripts for phenlypropanoid and flavonoid biosynthesis, ethylene production, adaptation to oxidative stress, and homologs of pathogenesis related (PR) proteins, and decreased transcripts for genes related to photosynthesis. In addition, the results suggest that susceptible genotypes respond to Xylella infection by induction of limited, but inadequate, defense response. We also compared the transcriptional and physiological response of plants treated by pathogen infection, low or moderate water deficit, or a combination of pathogen infection and water deficit. Although the transcriptional response of plants to Xylella infection was distinct from the response of healthy plants to moderate water stress, we observed synergy between water stress and disease, such that water stressed plants exhibit a stronger transcriptional response to the pathogen. This interaction was mirrored at the physiological level for aspects of water relations and photosynthesis, and in terms of the severity of disease symptoms and pathogen colonization, providing a molecular correlation of the classical concept with the disease triangle.

The volatile compositions of thre Korean ginseng cultivars (yunpoong, gumpoong, and cheonryang) and American ginseng under different cultivation years were analyzed by using HS-SPME/GC-MS. The differential volatile compounds were determined by multivariate statistical analysis including supervised PCA and unsupervised PLS-DA. In the present study, the results showed that major volatile compounds of ginseng cultivars were terpenes, such as spathulenol, β-myrcene, β-pinene, caryophyllene, D-limonen, sabinene and camphene. In particular, hexanal, γ-selinene, octanal, bicyclogermacrene, α-gurjunene, β-sesquiphellandrene, ginsinsene and panaginsene were mainly associated with Korean ginsengs. On the other hand, there was no significant difference between the volatile compounds of ginsengs and different cultivation years. The discrimination between Korean ginsengs and American ginseng could be contribute to β-farnesene, β-panasinsene, α-neoclovene, and α-isocomene. This study concludes that the volatile compositions of ginsengs could be more influenced by cultivars than the cultivation years.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the depressive activity and mechanism by the ethyl acetate fraction (EA) of cannabinoids-rich hemp seeds in a mouse model of depression caused by unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS). Animals induced depression with UCMS for 9 weeks. Depression-related behavioral changes were measured by video tracking analysis. Stress hormone concentration was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)-signaling-related protein expression was measured by western blotting. The total cannabinoids content of EA was 2.415 mg/g of extracts. EA administration significantly alleviated depression-related behaviors and significantly decreased adrenocorticotropic hormone and corticosterone concentrations compared to control groups. In addition, BDNF protein expression and phosphorylation of extracellular signal regulation kinase were significantly increased in the EA-treated group compared to the control group. Therefore, it was supposed that cannabinoid-rich EA alleviates depression-like behaviors by modulation of stress hormones and BDNF signaling-related factors.
