      • The Nucleotide Sequence and the Secondary Structure of 5S rRNA from a Green Alga Chaetomorpha moniligera

        The nucleotide sequence of 5S rRNA from a multicellular green alga Chaetomorpha moniligera was determined. The 5S rRNA is composed of 120 nucleotides and does not have any modified base. The nucleotide sequence of the 5S rRNA has wide range of similarities to the other green algae (53-71%). In spite of this, the secondary structure of the 5S rRNA has the general eukaryotic characteristics. Most of its bases in single-stranded regions are well conserved like in other eukaryotic 5S rRNA. 녹조류의 하나인 Chaetomorpha moniligera의 5S rRNA의 누클레오티드의 결합 순서를 결정하였다. 이 5S rRNA는 120개의 누클레오티드로 구성되어 있으며, 변형된 염기가 하나도 없었다. 이 5S rRNA의 누클레오티드의 결합 순서는 그밖의 녹조류의 5S rRNA들파 53%에서 71%까지의 광범위한 유사성을 가지고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 5S rRNA의 이차구조는 일반적인 진핵세포의 특성을 가지고 있다. 단일 가닥으로 된 부분에 있는 염기들은 그밖의 진핵세포의 것들과 마찬가지로 잘 보존되어 있다.

        Rhodosporidium toruloides의 무세포 추출물에서 새로운 RNA 연결효소의 활동성을 검출하였다. 이 효소계는 합성 UG의 5'-인산에 2'-, 3'-, 또는 고리형 2' : 3'-누클레오티드를 잇따라 결합시킴으로써 $N_nU_{16}G$(n= 1,2,3,...)을 합성시키는 것을 관찰하였다. 합성 올리고누클레오티드와의 연결반응은 2'-포스포모노에스테르, 3',5'-포스포디에스테르 중간체 결합의 형성에 의해서 진행한다. 이 RNA 연결효소는 그의 최대 활동성을 위해서 ATP와 $Mg^{2+}$을 필요로 한다. 흥미있는 것은, 무세포 추출물을 Micrococcus 에서 얻은 핵산가수분해효소로 처리하면 효소 활동성이 없어지지만, 데옥시리보 핵산가수분해효소로 처리한 경우에는 활동성에 영향을 미치지 않는다. 이것은 이 RNA 연결효소가 그의 연결작용에 RNA 성분을 필요로 함을 가리킨다. The enzyme system was found to successively join 2'-, 3'-, or cyclic 2' : 3'-nucleotide to the 5'-phosphate of synthetic $U_{16}G$, leading to the synthesis of $N_{n}U_{16}G$(n=1,2,3...). The ligation of the nucleotides with synthetic oligonucleotide was found to proceed by forming 2'-phosphomonoester, 3',5'-phospho diester intermediate linkage. The RNA ligase requires ATP and $Mg^{2+}$ for its maximum activity. Interestingly, treatment of the cell- free extract with micrococcal nuclease but not with deoxyribonuclease abolishes the enzyme activity, indicating that the RNA ligase requires an RNA component(s) for its ligation activity.

        원자력 발전소 주변지역 거주민의 가구소득별 영양섭취

        This study was conducted to measure and evaluate the food and nutrient intakes of the people living near the nuclear plant and to investigate the relationship between the household income level and the food and nutrient intake patterns. A total of 552 cases (263 males and 289 females) were surveyed during the period from April 1 to December 21 of 2005. Dietary intake was measured by means of the 24-hour recall method. The data were analyzed using SPSS Windows (ver. 14.0). The household income level of the subjects was classified into two groups: Low income group (LIG;≤2,000,000 won) and high income group (HIG;>2,000,000). The subjects at large had less energy and nutrient intakes than did the population in town and village who participated in the 2005 National Health and Nutrition Survey. The intake of calcium, zinc, vitamin A, riboflavin, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and folic acid was less than the Estimated Average Requirement in case of 50~95% of the subjects. The LIG consumed less beans, vegetables, fruits, meats, and beverages than did the HIG in male, while the LIG consumed less eggs and beverages than did the HIG in female. The LIG consumed less nutrients than did the HIG in male, except for carbohydrate, while the LIG consumed less nutrients including zinc, vitamin A, riboflavin, vitamin B6, vitamin C, folic acid than did the HIG in female. In addition, the LIG had higher percentage energy consumption from carbohydrate. These results suggest that higher food and nutrient intake is associated with higher income.
