Selection of Psychrotrophic Leuconostoc spp. from Native Fruits, and Studies on Their Dextransucrases

Cigdem Ileri Yamaner,Ismail Yavuz Sezen,Aziz Tanriseven 한국식품과학회 2010 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.19 No.1

Present study was aimed at selection of psychrotrophic Leuconostoc spp., having dextransucrase activity from native fruits and sauerkraut. Fifty-six colonies of lactic acid bacteria producing dextransucrase were isolated and characterized by physiological-biochemical methods. Seven isolates with high dextransucrase activities (0.68-1.63 IU/mL) were studied in detail including characterization by 16S rDNA sequence comparison. It was found that these isolates grow faster and produced dextransucrase earlier than Leuconostoc mesenteroides B512FMC-13Glc, a mutant form of the commercial strain. Molecular weights of the dextransucrases produced by 7isolates were determined and acceptor reactions using maltose were studied. Dextranase hydrolysis products of dextrans produced by new enzymes were similar to those of commercially produced B-512 F dextran. The new dextransucrases could find industrial uses and the strains isolated (AN 39-1, Or2p-2, Mu3, and Mu10) could be used as prebiotic producing starters in food fermentations due to having high dextransucrase activity and their growth at 4℃.

      • PPAR-Gamma Pro12Ala Polymorphism and Gastric Cancer Risk in a Turkish Population

        Canbay, Emel,Kurnaz, Ozlem,Canbay, Bahar,Bugra, Dursun,Cakmakoglu, Bedia,Bulut, Turker,Yamaner, Sumer,Sokucu, Necmettin,Buyukuncu, Yilmaz,Yilmaz-Aydogan, Hulya Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.11

Background: Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma ($PPAR{\gamma}$) is a ligand dependent transcription factor involved in various processes, including carcinogenesis. We aimed to investigate any possible association of the $PPAR{\gamma}$ Pro12Ala (rs1801282) polymorphism with risk of developing gastric cancer (GC). Patients and Methods: A hospital based case control study was designed covering 50 patients with GC and 120 healthy controls. The frequencies of $PPAR{\gamma}$ Pro12Ala (rs1801282) were determined using a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assay. Results: The Ala12 allele of the $PPAR{\gamma}$ Pro12Ala G gene was associated with a 1.95 fold increased risk of GC development (p: 0.022; 95% CI: 1.58-2.40). Subgroup analyses showed that the same allele was also associated with metastasis (p: 0.000; OR:4.09; 95%CI:2.273-7.368) and differentiation (p: 0.004; OR:1.95; 95%CI:1.335-2.875) in patients with GC. Conclusion: This study suggests that the $PPAR{\gamma}$ Pro12Ala G (Ala12) allele might be associated with development, differentiation and metastatic process of GC in the Turkish population. Further studies conducted in larger study groups and in different ethnic populations will be needed to clarify the exact role of the $PPAR{\gamma}$ Pro12Ala polymorphism in GC.

Visualization of Artificially Deposited Submicron-sized Aerosol Particles on the Surfaces of Leaves and Needles in Trees

        Yamane, Kenichi,Nakaba, Satoshi,Yamaguchi, Masahiro,Kuroda, Katsushi,Sano, Yuzou,Lenggoro, I. Wuled,Izuta, Takeshi,Funada, Ryo Korean Society for Atmospheric Environment 2012 Asian Journal of Atmospheric Environment (AJAE) Vol.6 No.4

To understand the effect of aerosols on the growth and physiological conditions of trees in forests, it is important to know the state of aerosols that are deposited on the surface of the leaves or needles. In this study, we developed methods of visualization of submicron-sized aerosols that were artificially deposited from the gas-phase or liquid phase onto tree leaves or needles in trees. Firstly, we used field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) to observe black carbon (BC) particles that were artificially sprayed onto the leaves or needles. The distribution of BC particles deposited on the leaves and needles were distinguished based on the size and morphological features of the particles. The distribution and agglomerates size of BC particles differed between two spraying methods of BC particles employed. Secondly, we tried to visualize gold (Au) particles that were artificially sprayed onto the leaves using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) coupled to FE-SEM. We detected the Au particles based on the characteristic X-ray spectrum, which was secondarily generated from the Au particles. In contrast to the case of BC particles, the Au particles did not form agglomerates and were uniformly distributed on the leaf surfaces. The present results show that our methods provide useful information of adsorption and/or behavior of fine particles at the submicron level on the surface of the leaves.

      • Post Occupancy Evaluation Model for Sustainable Neighborhood Development

        Yaman, Rostam,Thadaniti, Suwattana,Dahiya, Bharat,Abdullah, Jamalunlaili,Ahmad, Noraini 한국생태환경건축학회 2017 한국생태환경건축학회 학술발표대회 논문집 Vol.17 No.2

Urban green rating system in the ASEAN region is rather new. Even though certain Green Building Institutes/Green Building Councils (GBIs/GBCs) in the ASEAN region have its Green Township Assessment Criteria (GTAC) been developed and implemented but there is no post-occupancy evaluation being conducted in assessing the effectiveness and sustainability level of the certified township? Thus, embark the research problem whether urban neighborhood assessment criteria and project fulfilled the effectiveness and sustainability concept according to sustainability dimension pillars (SDP). The research aim and objectives is to identify and formulate Post-Occupancy Evaluation Model (POEM) based on SDP towards sustainable neighborhood development for ASEAN region. The study scope focused on Green Building Index (GBI-TAC Malaysia) certified neighborhood project and Green Urban Village Development in Thailand which was occupied for more than one year. The stakeholder-inclusion approached is used in this research in order to gather end-users experiences regarding the proposed POEM for sustainable neighborhood development. The findings suggested there is an adaptation gap of SDP in current GTAC and also significant differences between pre-occupancy and post-occupancy theory and variables, hence lead to further review and refinement towards sustainable neighborhood development in the ASEAN region.

Articles : The Scope for Policy Coordination between the United States and Europe: Implications of Asymmetric Labor Markets

( Yaman Asikoglu ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 1990 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.5 No.1

This paper emphasizes the structural differences in the American and European. labor markets and examines the implications of these asymmetries for the scope of policy coordination between these economies. Strategic aspects of monetary and fiscal policies are analyzed as a game between a country with real wage rigidity(Europe) and a country with nominal wage rigidity (U.S.). The paper presents simple examples which show that the nature of the noncooperative equilibrium in this asymmetric framework depends on the strategy variables chosen by the countries. Policy coordination is redundant if money supplies are the only instruments used by both players. The noncooperative fiscal policy game is inefficient, and policy coordination becomes redundant again when both monetary and fiscal policies are employed. These results illustrate that an appropriate assignment of policy instruments can be a substitute to policy coordination in generating an efficient solution to the` international policy game.

Can Auditory and Vestibular Findings Differentiate Vestibular Migraine and Meniere’s Disease?

        Yaman Handan,Polat Burcu,Şerbetçioğlu Mustafa Bülent 대한청각학회 2023 Journal of Audiology & Otology Vol.27 No.2

Background and Objectives: Besides evaluating the auditory and vestibular systems of patients with vestibular migraine (VM) and Meniere’s disease (MD), this study aimed to examine the clinical overlaps between these two conditions by detailed evaluation of the patient’s symptoms.Subjects and Methods: The ears of the patients with VM and MD were evaluated and patients’ vestibular and auditory complaints were questioned particularly. Pure tone audiometry, vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) responses, and caloric test results were evaluated for objective measurements. Results: The VM group had better air-conduction and boneconduction threshold and speech reception threshold and speech discrimination score test values (p<0.05). Regarding the interaural N1-P1 asymmetry ratio, the cervical VEMP between the groups had significant differences (p=0.019). The MD group had more unilateral tinnitus and ear fullness complaints and canal paresis results (p<0.01). The VM group had more motion sickness complaints (p<0.01).Conclusions: If only ears with hearing loss are evaluated; there was no significant difference between VM and MD, but regardless of hearing level or only the patients with normal hearing were evaluated, the VM group had better hearing levels. It should be considered that patients with VM may have VM-independent hearing loss, and patient complaints should be sufficiently detailed to make an accurate distinction from MD.

Web Catchphrase Improve System Employing Onomatopoeia and Large-Scale N-gram Corpus

Yamane, Hiroaki,Hagiwara, Masafumi Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems 2012 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL of FUZZY LOGIC and INTELLIGE Vol.12 No.1

In this paper, we propose a system which improves text catchphrases on the web using onomatopoeia and the Japanese Google N-grams. Onomatopoeia is regarded as a fundamental tool in daily communication for people. The proposed system inserts an onomatopoetic word into plain text catchphrases. Being based on a large catchphrase encyclopedia, the proposed system evaluates each catchphrase's candidates considering the words, structure and usage of onomatopoeia. That is, candidates are selected whether they contain onomatopoeia and they use specific catchphrase grammatical structures. Subjective experiments show that inserted onomatopoeia is effective for making attractive catchphrases.

Quantifying the Technology Level of Production System for Technology Transfer

        Yamane, Yasuo,Takahashi, Katsuhiko,Hamada, Kunihiro,Morikawa, Katsumi,Bahagia, Senator Nur,Diawati, Lucia,Cakravastia, Andi Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers 2011 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.10 No.2

This paper develops a technology level quantification (TLQ) model by utilizing a learning curve. Original learning curve shows the relationship between cumulative number of units and the required time for the unit. On the other hand, in our developed model, the technology level, such as speed of production and quality of the produced items, is expressed as a function of not cumulative number of units but time, for increasing generality. Furthermore, for expressing each learning that consists of conceptual learning and operational learning, S-curve is utilized in our developed model. By fitting the S-curve and/or decomposing into some activities, our TQL model can be applied to approximate organizational and complicated process. Some variations in time and levels, parameters of our developed model are shown. By using the parameters, the procedure to identify our developed model is proposed. Also, the influential factors for the parameters of our developed model are discussed with classifying the factors into technoware, infoware, humanware, and orgaware. The expected technology level is utilized for expecting the capacity of production system, and the expected capacity can be utilized in predicting various changes in the organization and deciding managerial decision about TT. A case study in manufacturing industry shows the effectiveness of the developed model.
