Micro-porous nickel (Ni) with an open cell structure was fabricated by powder metallurgy. The pore size of the micro-porous Ni approximated and . For comparison, porous Ni with a macro-porous structure were also prepared by both powder metallurgy (pore size ) and the traditional chemical vapour deposition method (pore size ). The mechanical properties of the micro-and macro-porous Ni samples were evaluated using compressive tests. Results indicate that the micro-porous Ni samples exhibited significantly enhanced mechanical properties, compared to those of the macro-porous Ni samples.
Association of a polymorphism of BTN2A1 with myocardial infarction in East Asian populations

Objective: We have performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify genetic variants that confer susceptibility to myocardial infarction (MI) in Japanese and Korean populations. Methods: A total of 17,447 Japanese or Korean individuals from four independent subject panels was examined. Japanese subject panels A, B, and C comprised 134 individuals with MI and 137 controls, 1431 individuals with MI and 3161 controls, and 643 individuals with MI and 1347 controls, respectively, whereas the Korean population comprised 1880 individuals with MI and 8714 controls. A GWAS for MI was performed in Japanese subject panel A with the use of the Affymetrix GeneChip Human Mapping 500K Array Set. Results: Seventy single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) significantly (P<1.0x10<SUP>-7</SUP>) associated with MI by the GWAS were examined further in Japanese subject panel B, revealing two SNPs (rs6929846 of BTN2A1, rs2569512 of ILF3) to be significantly (P<0.0007) associated with MI. The rs6929846 SNP of BTN2A1, but not rs2569512 of ILF3, was also significantly associated with MI in Japanese subject panel C. However, the association of neither rs6929846 nor rs2569512 with MI was replicated in the Korean population. Conclusion: BTN2A1 may be a susceptibility gene for MI in Japanese individuals.

This paper deals with the difference of the static and kinetic thrust characteristics of a linear pulse motor (LPM) without and with feedback control for a total artificial heart (TAH). In general, the kinetic thrust of a LPM without feedback control decreases as increasing the mover velocity. The kinetic thrust characteristics of the LPM with feedback control are improved approximately 30 % as compared with the LPM without feedback control in the high velocity range.<br/>

<P>The wetting of a droplet on a particular solid surface of a thin liquid film followed by solvent drying is a crucial process for nanostructure formation. However, this thin liquid film was commonly observed to rupture due to the instability of the given surface. Herein, we developed a technique to control the dynamical kinetics of a solution droplet by the co-solvent vapor, which yielded a reversible spreading/dewetting process between the spherical droplet and the stable thin liquid layer on surfaces that are usually difficult to wet. Our theoretical model indicates that the wetting process is governed by the sorption of co-solvent vapor within the droplet, which alters the surface free energy, lowers the contact angle, reduces the liquid film thickness, and stabilizes the drying process. The obtained thin liquid films allow the in-plane alignment to generate one-dimensional nano- or micro-structures in the deposited materials, such as nano-wires and organic crystals. In particular, in-plane aligned organic single crystals unveiled high field-effect mobility, up to 9.1 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), in thin-film transistors.</P>

Rumination behavior, in vivo digestibility of cell wall constituents, particle size reduction in the rumen, and retention time in the digestive tract of sheep were examined using rice and oat straw as roughage sources. The in sacco digestibility, rumen fermentation, and microbial population and internal adenosine 5-triphosphate (ATP) content were also determined under feeding conditions of high-roughage and high-concentrate diets. Chewing number and time in rumination behavior were higher with rice straw than with oat straw, while the in sacco and in vivo DMD of rice straw were consistently lower than those of oat straw. Rice straw also showed higher frequency of thinner and longer particles in the rumen contents and lower retention time in the whole digestive tract as compared to those of oat straw. Rice straw was more effective to maintain the ruminal pH than oat straw, being reflected in higher internal ATP content of large-type protozoa on the high- concentrate diet. Changes in the ruminal microflora by shifting from the low- to the high- concentrate diet were also different between rice and oat straw.
