We measured proton-production double differential cross sections (DDXs) by 290 MeV/u carbon beams on carbon, copper, lead targets at forward angles. The proton energies were measured with the spectrometer which consisted of GSO(Ce) crystals and plastic scintillators. The measured DDXs were compared with the calculated ones with PHITS code. The simulation results generally agreed with the measured ones. The measured results will be useful as the benchmark of existing simulation codes and for the future improvements.

Neutron-production double-differential cross sections for 290 MeV/u carbon-ion incidence on carbon target were measured with NE213 liquid organic scintillators by time-of-flight technique. NE213 liquid organic scintillators 12.7 cm in diameter and 12.7 cm thick were placed in the directions of 15˚, 30˚, 45˚, 60˚, 75˚, and 90˚. The typical flight path length was 4.0 m. In order to reduce neutrons from the beam dump, an iron and a concrete shield was placed between the detectors and the beam dump. For measurement of background, a shadow bar was set between the target and each detector. Neutron detection efficiencies were obtained by calculations with a Monte Carlo simulation code SCINFUL-QMD. The cross sections were obtained for neutron energy above 2.8 MeV. The experimental results were compared with the calculation data of the PHITS code.

Bovine blastocysts were obtained by totally in-vitro technique and then transferred to recipient cows. Total of 15 calves (including 4 premature calves) were obtained from 11 recipients. Four calves were obtained from the transfers of fresh blastocysts and 9 calves were obtained from the transfers of frozen-thawed blastocysts. Two calves were obtained from the bisected fresh blastocyst. The males and 5 females were delivered. Birth weight of calves was within normal range except one female, and all calves appeared to be completely normal.

Double-differential cross section (DDX) data of nucleon-actinide reactions is crucial for the study of nuclear waste transmutation by accelerator driven systems. Charged particle emission data is strongly required as well as the neutron data up to several Gev. In the present study, we measured double-differential cross sections of light charged particle productions for proton induced reactions on ^(232)Th at 360 Mev. The experiment was carried out at the PHASOTRON facility of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna. The light charged particles (LCPs) emitted from nuclear reactions were detected by ΔE-E counter telescopes. Eight detector systems were used. Four of them were comprised of two plastic scintillator plates and BGO crystal. The other four consisted of two silicon semiconductor detectors and two scintillation counters, a cubic CsI(TI) (40 mm long) crystal and plate plastic scintillator. The four identical detectors on each side were placed at laboratory angles of 20˚. 40˚, 70˚ and 105˚ with respect to the beam axis. Resultant DDX spectra of protons and deuterons were compared with intranuclear cascade (INC) model.
Study of Pulse Shape Discrimination of Sub-MeV Neutrons From Gamma-Rays with Liquid Scintillator

We have studied pulse shape discrimination of sub-MeV neutron from spallation nuclear reactions. Neutron measurements were carried out with a 2-inch NE213 scintillator viewed by a phototube (HAMAMATSU H1949) for the carbon-carbon reaction at 290 MeV/n. Neuron energies were measured with the TOF technique by using a timing pick-up plastic scintillator. Output signals of detectors were digitized and stored with a digitizer (Acqiris DC282). The digital pulse shape discrimination (DPSD) has been investigated through comparison between three different analyzing algorithms. Effects on the neutron-gamma (n/g) discrimination were also investigated after the subtraction of background and abnormal events. Moreover, in order to realize better n/g discrimination the detector system was cooled down to about zero degrees centigrade by Peltier devices to suppress the dark current of the phototube which would be the main cause distorting pulse shapes. Experimental studies were made in terms of the temperature dependence of detector performance including pulse shape.
Neutron-Production Double-Differential Cross Sections from Heavy-Ion Interactions

The existing data of neutron-production double-differential cross sections on C, Cu, and Pb targets bombarded with heavy-ions from He to Xe at 230 - 600 MeV/nucleon were revised by using a new set on neutron-detection efficiency values of an NE213-type liquid organic scintillator calculated with SCINFUL-QMD. The revised data were compared with the experimental data obtained by our new measurements, and the predictions of the Monte-Carlo particle transport codes, PHITS, FLUKA, MCNPX, and Geant4. While the revised and new experimental data showed good agreement, the Monte-Carlo codes failed to reproduce the high-energy peaks in the forward angular region.
CO-CULTURE OF BOVINE EMBRYOS WITH CUMULUS CELLS
Goto, K.,Koba, M.,Takuma, Y.,Nakanishi, Y.,Ogawa, K. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1989 Animal Bioscience Vol.2 No.4
Bovine embryos/ova obtained from in-vitro fertilization were either co-cultured on a monolayer of bovine cumulus cells or cultured in medium alone. Embryos/ova co-cultured with cumulus cells developed to 8-cell (30.9%), morula (29.8%) and blastocyst stages (26.6%) after 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8 days of culture, respectively, while embryos/ova cultured in medium alone failed to develop beyond 8-cell (0-13.3%), morula (0-1.5%) and blastocyst stages (0%). The results of this study demonstrated the beneficial effect of cumulus cells on the development of bovine embryos.

Bovine blastocysts were obtained by in-vitro culture of embryos derived from in-vitro fertilization of oocytes matured in-vitro. These blastocysts and blastocysts from inseminated donors were bisected by a simple method (without a holding pipette) using a microblade operated by a micromanipulator. A pair of demi-embryos was transferred nonsurgically into each uterine horn of a recipient cow 6 or 8 days after estrus. Pregnancy resulted from the third transfer. Ultrasound examination done 52 days after estrus (46 days after transfer) confirmed the presence of at least one fetus in the each uterine horn. This is the first report to show the viability of bisected bovine blastocysts obtained from in-vitro culture of embryos derived from in-vitro fertilization of oocytes matured in-vitro. In addition, a simple method to bisect bovine embryos is described.
