        Efficient synthesis of bio-monomer 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid from concentrated 5-hydroxymethylfurfural or fructose in DMSO/H2O mixed solvent

        The conversion of concentrated 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) or fructose to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid(FDCA), a renewable alternative to petroleum-derived terephthalate acid, is highly desirable butchallenging for FDCA production in an industrial scale. In this contribution, DMSO/H2O mixture wasdemonstrated as an effective medium for the production of FDCA from high concentration of HMF orfructose. For example, FDCA yield up to 93% was achieved at 10 wt% HMF concentration in DMSO/H2Oover commercially available Ru/C (2 equiv. NaHCO3, 130 C, 4 MPa O2 and 12 h). Furthermore, an overallFDCA yield of 65% was achieved from concentrated fructose (19 wt%) through a facile two-step process. Notably, it is so far the highest HMF or fructose concentration employed for FDCA formation. As comparedto pure water or DMSO, DMSO/H2O mixed system is able to stabilize HMF in an alkaline environment,which allows the efficient oxidation of HMF at high concentrations.

        STAT3, a Poor Survival Predicator, Is Associated with Lymph Node Metastasis from Breast Cancer

        Purpose: The aim of this study is to explore signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) expression in breast cancer and to analyze the detailed mechanism that STAT3 contributes to the progression of breast cancer. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathologic characteristics and overall survival (OS) of 140 breast cancer patients after curative surgery, and detected STAT3 expression, phosphorylated STAT3 (pSTAT3) expression, Ki-67 expression, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-C and -D expression in breast cancer tissues, and adjacent nontumor tissues. Survival analysis and relationship analysis were adopted for demonstrated the important mechanism of STAT3 contribution to progression of breast cancer. Results: STAT3 expression, pSTAT3 expression, Ki-67 expression, VEGF-C expression, and VEGF-D expression in breast cancer tissues were significantly higher than those in adjacent nontumor tissues, respectively. With survival analysis, only number of lymph node metastasis (N stage) was identified as the independent predictors of the OS of breast cancer patients. Besides, we demonstrated there was the most prominent correlation between STAT3 expression and lymph node metastasis in breast cancer tissues by using the multinominal regression method. Conclusion: STAT3, a poor survival biomarker potential association with lymph node metastasis, was suitable for predication the OS of breast cancer patients after curative resection.

        Selective deposition of Au-Pt alloy nanoparticles on ellipsoidal zirconium titanium oxides for reduction of 4-nitrophenol

        Au-Pt alloy nanoparticles that are selectively anchored on TiO2 surface of the ellipsoidal zirconium titanium composite oxides were successfully prepared by a facile two-step method: prefabricated binary composite oxides on the ellipsoidal Fe2O3@SiO2 by a versatile cooperative template-directed coating method, and then in situ formation of Au-Pt alloy NPs with Sn2+ as the reduction agent. The alloy catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The result suggested that highly dispersive and ultrafine Au-Pt alloy nanoparticles were deposited onto TiO2 surface of the binary oxides solely. The particle size of nanoalloys was closely related to the ratio of Zr : Ti in the composite oxides shell. Increasing the content of Zr element led to a growth in the size of alloy nanoparticles. When used as catalysts for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, the prepared supported alloyed catalysts exhibited high catalytic activity, and the sample could be easily recycled without a significant decrease of the catalytic activity.
