      • Treatment of fever with traditional Chinese medicine according to Zheng on cancer patients (based on case reports)

        Peng Cao,Lan-Ying Liu,Xue-Ting Cai,Xiao-Ning Wang,Jie-Ge Huo,Zhong-Ying Zhou 셀메드 세포교정의약학회 2012 셀메드 (CellMed) Vol.2 No.2

Fever in cancer patients is often due to the following causes: evil qi and toxity stagnancy, disorders of qi and blood, deficiencies of zang and fu organs, and the disorder of yin and yang. The treatments given to cancer patients with a fever are according to five: (a) Excessive inner heat and toxicants: remove heat and the toxicant, induce purgation. We use Cheng-Qi-Tang plus Qing-Wen-Bai-Du-Yin. (b) Tangle of damp and heat, and qi stagnancy: remove damp and heat, smooth the qi channel. We use Gan-Lu-Xiao-Du-Dan or San-Ren-Tang. (c) Obvious blood and heat stagnancy: remove heat and blood stasis. We use Xue-Fu-Zhu-Yu-Tang. (d) Deficiency of spleen qi, inner heat caused by a yin deficiency: nourish spleen qi and yin to remove the inner heat. We use Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang or Xiao-Jian-Zhong-Tang. (e) Prominent yin deficiency and hectic fever: replenish yin and remove inner heat. We use Qing-Hao-Bie-Jia-Tang or Chai-Qian-Mei-Lian-San. The pathogenesis of fever in cancer patients is complicated. We can see both deficiency and excess in one differentiation. Therefore, we must make sure of it, then we can get the most effective treatment.

Influence of pre-slaughter fasting time on weight loss, meat quality and carcass contamination in broilers

        Xue Ge,Cheng Silu,Yin Jingwen,Zhang Runxiang,Su Yingying,Li Xiang,Li Jianhong,Bao Jun 아세아·태평양축산학회 2021 Animal Bioscience Vol.34 No.6

Objective: An experiment was conducted to determine the appropriate fasting time prior to slaughter for broilers in floor-feed and scatter-feed mode. Methods: On 21 d since hatching, 120 Arbor Acres broilers were divided into floor-feed and scatter-feed groups, chicks from each group were further assigned to feed withdrawal treatments for 0, 4, 6, 8, and 10 h. Some resultant indicators such as carcass contamination, body weight loss, meat quality of 54-day-old broilers were measured. Results: It appears that longer feed withdrawal increased weight loss, lightness, drop loss of meat but reduced pH. A significant higher weight loss and lightness for both floor-feed and scatter-feed chicks coincided after 6 to 10 h feed withdrawal (p<0.05). pH for breast muscle at 45 min postmortem reduced when chicks of scatter-feed were fasted 6 and 10 h, while the reduction of floor-feed group occurred only in 10 h (p<0.05). A noticeable effect of feed withdrawal on drop loss occurred after 10 h fasting in scatter-feed of which drop loss were significantly higher than that for other groups including control (p<0.05). The change of contamination propensity revealed that 6 to 10 h fasting significantly reduced the likelihood of carcass contamination under both floor-feed and scatter-feed (p<0.05). Net weights of intestinal contents for gizzard were significantly reduced after feed deprived for 10 h in floor-feed and 6 and 10 h in scatter-feed (p<0.05). The decrease for whole intestine occurred after floor-feed broilers have been without feed for more than 4 h, scatter-feed broilers for more than 8 h (p<0.05). Conclusion: On the premise that poultry product properties and welfare were not significantly damaged, proper fasting time could reduce carcass contamination. Current data implied that 6 h fasting was recommendable for both floor and scatter feed pre-slaughter broilers. • Insect-specific microRNA involved in the development of the silkworm Bombyx mori

        Yong Zhang,Xue Zhou,Xie Ge,Jiang-Hao Jiang,Mu-Wang Li,Shi-Hai Jia,Xiao-Nan Yang,Yun-Chao Kan,Xue-Xia Miao,Guo-Ping Zhao,Fei Li,Yong-Ping Huang 한국응용곤충학회 2009 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2009 No.10

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous non-coding genes that participate in post-transcription regulation by either degrading mRNA or blocking its translation. It is considered to be very important in regulating insect development and metamorphosis. Insects are the largest group of animals and are extremely valuable in biological and agriculture research. Insects are also important pests to human health and agriculture, and efforts are necessary protect both humans and plants from disease and damage. Despite their importance, insects lag behind mammals, nematodes, and plants in miRNA research. At present, only 279 insect miRNAs have been identified from Drosophila melanogaster, Anopheles gambiae, Apis mellifera, Bombyx mori, and D. pseudoobscura in miRBase, and most of these miRNAs were computationally predicted without experimental validation. Functional analysis of insect miRNAs has only been conducted in D. melanogaster.

Recent advances in carbon quantum dots for virus detection, as well as inhibition and treatment of viral infection

        Xue Yuxiang,Liu Chenchen,Andrews Gavin,Wang Jinyan,Ge Yi 나노기술연구협의회 2022 Nano Convergence Vol.9 No.15

In the last decade, carbon quantum dots (CQDs), as a novel class of carbon-based nanomaterials, have received increasing attention due to their distinct properties. CQDs are ultimately small nanoparticles with an average size below 10 nm, possessing high water solubility, alluring photoluminescence, photostability, excellent biocompatibility, low/none toxicity, environmental friendliness, and high sustainability, etc. In history, there are intermittent threats from viruses to humans, animals and plants worldwide, resulting in enormous crises and impacts on our life, environment, economy and society. Some recent studies have unveiled that certain types of CQDs exhibited high and potent antiviral activities against various viruses such as human coronavirus, arterivirus, norovirus and herpesvirus. Moreover, they have been successfully explored and developed for different virus detections including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This article exclusively overviews and discusses the recent progress of designing, synthesizing, modifying/functionalizing and developing CQDs towards effective virus detection as well as the inhibition and treatment of viral infection. Their mechanisms and applications against various pathogenic viruses are addressed. The latest outcomes for combating the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) utilizing CQDs are also highlighted. It can be envisaged that CQDs could further benefit the development of virus detectors and antiviral agents with added broad-spectrum activity and cost-effective production.

Evaluation of Biogas Production Performance and Dynamics of the Microbial Community in Different Straws

        ( Xue Li ),( Yan-hua Liu ),( Xin Zhang ),( Chang-ming Ge ),( Ren-zhe Piao ),( Wei-dong Wang ),( Zong-jun Cui ),( Hong-yan Zhao ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2017 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.27 No.3

The development and utilization of crop straw biogas resources can effectively alleviate the shortage of energy, environmental pollution, and other issues. This study performed a continuous batch test at 35°C to assess the methane production potential and volatile organic acid contents using the modified Gompertz equation. Illumina MiSeq platform sequencing, which is a sequencing method based on sequencing-by-synthesis, was used to compare the archaeal community diversity, and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) was used to analyze the bacterial community diversity in rice straw, dry maize straw, silage maize straw, and tobacco straw. The results showed that cumulative gas production values for silage maize straw, rice straw, dry maize straw, and tobacco straw were 4,870, 4,032.5, 3,907.5, and 3,628.3 ml/g ·VS , respectively, after 24 days. Maximum daily gas production values of silage maize straw and rice straw were 1,025 and 904.17 ml/g ·VS, respectively, followed by tobacco straw and dry maize straw. The methane content of all four kinds of straws was > 60%, particularly that of silage maize straw, which peaked at 67.3%. Biogas production from the four kinds of straw was in the order silage maize straw > rice straw > dry maize straw > tobacco straw, and the values were 1,166.7, 1,048.4, 890, and 637.4 ml/g ·VS, respectively. The microbial community analysis showed that metabolism was mainly carried out by acetateutilizing methanogens, and that Methanosarcina was the dominant archaeal genus in the four kinds of straw, and the DGGE bands belonged to the phyla Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Chloroflexi. Silage maize is useful for biogas production because it contains four kinds of straw.

Estrogen negatively regulates the renal epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) by promoting Derlin-1 expression and AMPK activation

        Xue Zhang,Yamei Ge,Ashfaq-Ahmad-Shah Bukhari,Qian Zhu,Yachen Shen,Min Li,Hui Sun,Dongming Su,Xiubin Liang 생화학분자생물학회 2019 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.51 No.-

The main functions of the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) in the kidney distal nephron are mediation of sodium and water balance and stabilization of blood pressure. Estrogen has important effects on sodium and water balance and on premenopausal blood pressure, but its role in the regulation of ENaC function is not fully understood. Female Sprague–Dawley rats were treated with 17β-estradiol for 6 weeks following bilateral ovariectomy. Plasma estrogen, aldosterone, creatinine, and electrolytes were analyzed, and α-ENaC and derlin-1 protein expression in the kidney was determined by immunohistochemistry and western blotting. The expression levels of α-ENaC, derlin-1, AMPK, and related molecules were also examined by western blotting and real-time PCR in cultured mouse renal collecting duct (mpkCCDc14) epithelial cells following estrogen treatment. Immunofluorescence and coimmunoprecipitation were performed to detect α-ENaC binding with derlin-1 and α-ENaC ubiquitination. The results demonstrated that the loss of estrogen elevated systolic blood pressure in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. OVX rat kidneys showed increased α-ENaC expression but decreased derlin-1 expression. In contrast, estrogen treatment decreased α-ENaC expression but increased derlin-1 expression in mpkCCDc14 cells. Moreover, estrogen induced α-ENaC ubiquitination by promoting the interaction of α-ENaC with derlin-1 and evoked phosphorylation of AMPK in mpkCCDc14 cells. Our study indicates that estrogen reduces ENaC expression and blood pressure in OVX rats through derlin-1 upregulation and AMPK activation.

SOLUTIONS TO M-POINT BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS OF THIRD ORDER ORDINARY DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS AT RESONANCE

        XUE, CHUNYAN,DU, ZENGJI,GE, WEIGAO 한국전산응용수학회 2005 Journal of applied mathematics & informatics Vol.17 No.1

In this paper, we study the third order ordinary differential equation : $$x'(t)=f(t,x(t),x'(t),x'(t)),t{\in}(0,1)$$ subject to the boundary value conditions: $$x'(0)=x'(\xi),x'(1)=^{m-3}{\Sigma}_{i=1}{{\beta}x'({\eta}i),x'(1)=0}$$. Here ${\beta}_{i}{\in}R,\;^{m-3}{\Sigma}_{i=1}\;{\beta}_{i}\;=\;1,\;0<{\eta}_1<{\eta}_2<{\cdots}<{\eta}_{m-3}<1,\;0<\xi<1$. This is the case dimKer L = 2. When the ${\beta}_i$ have different signs, we prove some existence results for the m-point boundary value problem at resonance by use of the coincidence degree theory of Mawhin [12, 13]. Since all the existence results obtained in previous papers are for the case dimKerL = 1, our work is new.

The Effect of Transformation on the Virulence of Streptococcus pneumoniae

        Xue-Mei Zhang,Yi-Bing Yin,Dan Zhu,Bao-De Chen,Jin-Yong Luo,Yi-Ping Deng,Ming-Fang Liu,Shu-Hui Chen,Jiang-Ping Meng,Kai Lan,Yuan-Shuai Huang,Ge-Fei Kang 한국미생물학회 2005 The journal of microbiology Vol.43 No.4

Although pneumococcus is one of the most frequently encountered opportunistic pathogen in the world, the mechanisms responsible for its infectiveness have not yet been fully understood. In this paper, we have attempted to characterize the effects of pneumococcal transformation on the pathogenesis of the organism. We constructed three transformation-deficient pneumococcal strains, which were designated as Nos. 1d, 2d, and 22d. The construction of these altered strains was achieved via the insertion of the inactivated gene, comE, to strains 1, 2 and 22. We then conducted a comparison between the virulence of the transformation-deficient strains and that of the wild-type strains, via an evaluation of the ability of each strain to adhere to endothelial cells, and also assessed psaA mRNA expression, and the survival of hosts after bacterial challenge. Compared to what was observed with the wild-type strains, our results indicated that the ability of all of the transformation-deficient strains to adhere to the ECV304 cells had been significantly reduced (p < 0.05), the expression of psaA mRNA was reduced significantly (p < 0.05) in strains 2d and 22d, and the median survival time of mice infected with strains 1d and 2d was increased significantly after intraperitoneal bacterial challenge (p < 0.05). The results of our study also clearly indicated that transformation exerts significant effects on the virulence characteristics of S. pneumoniae, although the degree to which this effect is noted appears to depend primarily on the genetic background of the bacteria.
